When it took off from that flower, it flew with that tube thing. My best guess is it was part of the chrysalis from which it emerged.

While monarchs puddle jump up north (fly north a bit, lay eggs, die, the next generation flies a bit north, etc.) taking 5-6 generations to get up to Canada, the generation that flies to Mexico has a different metabolism that allows them to fly directly to Mexico & overwinter. AND, the population that heads south skews male. So if you notice that you see a lot of males, it's not just you.
