  1. 🪂 PARACHUTING BEAVERS
    Save the Day 🦫🥇

After WW2, beavers in conflict with human neighbors had to be moved from suburbs to an Idaho mountains river basin.

✈️ No usual method of transportation worked in the dense slopes, so they attached spring-loaded boxes to parachutes, put in 76 beavers, and chunked them out of a plane.

    It worked. There is video.

😲 Recent imaging of the beaver reintroduction landscape shows
    🔥🧯 wildfire impacts were reduced
🌳 🌲 vegetation level was also higher

  4. 🪰 This very small fly landed on my finger last summer. Look at the bands on its tiny, tiny wings.

📷 Pic is a little blurry (had to use one hand quickly to get the shot), but it looks like a "biting midge" (Culicoides spp.). They need a better publicist, evidently.

🍂 It's one of a population in the thick layer of decaying leaves being used as a natural mulch nearby. Bugs like these are what Brown Thrashers and other birds are after when they are looking through leaves for food. We can support declining bird populations by just keeping leaves on the ground or as mulch in beds.

👀 Check out the latest post to Habitat Gardening.

🐦‍⬛ This time I cover where to find sources of native plants so you can prepare for the next growing season using *Keystone Plants* that are critical in your area to supply food for birds and butterflies to bolster their falling populations.

🐝 But there's more! For winter season improvement, I described how to keep a spot for ground-dwelling bees. I give you a link to a helpful guide from the Xerces Society that provides you with details.

🔗 And, as always, there are links to expert resources.

  6. 🌺 There's still time to add a 2026 resolution or two to support nature and wildlife. 🐦‍⬛ You can make a big impact with small actions.

Here's a list that you can scan through to find any resolutions appropriate and do-able for your situation.

These are some of mine. I will report progress here through the year:
✅ Plant 25 new native flowers (within tight budget)
✅ Provide nesting habitat for pollinators
✅ Leave the leaves and save the stems
✅ Execute a long-term social media campaign for invertebrates
✅ Share Xerces resources and conservation tips with 24 friends (done!😆)

  7. How do we create the stories that will bring a whole new generation back to the web of life, that will help people find hope again, and lean into their heart’s yearning for connection, relationship, being and belonging?
