🐝 This is one of the largest and oldest colonies found in the U.S.

🐝 Ground nesting bees make up about 70% of native bees in the U.S. and are very important pollinators. Cemeteries are an important habitat for them.

🐝 Researchers in AU estimate far more bee species globally than previously estimated, specifically an 18–25% increase.

🍅 Knowledge of bees supports their conservation and pollination of crops, which is worth roughly A$745 billion per year.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦🧑‍🧑‍🧒👩‍👩‍👦‍👦 Pollination is also crucial for our diet and wellbeing with 75% of food crop diversity and 35% of total food production benefiting from animal pollination.

🪨 Bees are what’s called a “keystone” group. Removing populations of that group would result in cascading ecological impacts (not in a good way).

Last week riding on the levee trail an orangish dragonfly quickly crossed my path. The shape matches this species and based on historical record this species may be active in NM this early in the season. So this is my educated guess.

Die Übergänge zum Makro sind ja durchaus fliessend, ich würde diese Nahaufnahmen jedoch allein aufgrund der Größe des Objekts (gut 5 cm) noch dem Begriff 'Detail - kein Makro' #FotoVorschlag zuordnen.

Das Tagpfauenauge Aglais io

gehört zu den Tag- und Edelfaltern. Typisch für diesen #Falter ist die kräftig rotbraune Flügelfarbe und ein großer bunter Augenfleck auf jedem Flügel, bei einer Flügelspannweite von fünf bis sechs Zentimetern. Gerne fliegt das #Tagpfauenauge - wie auch andere Falter und #Insekten - den mit seinem intensiven #Geruch nach Honig duftenden Schmetterlingsflieder (Buddleia) im Garten oder auf Siedlungsbrachen und Bahnflächen an.

Der Moschusbock (Aromia moschata)
Dieser nach Moschus „duftende“ Bockkäfer ist der einzige Repräsentant der Gattung Aromia in Europa. Als typischer Vertreter der #Bockkäfer ist der #Moschusbock an der gestreckten Körperform (Länge 20-35 Millimeter) und den langen Fühlern gut zu erkennen. Die Körperfarbe variiert von hellgrün bis nahezu schwarz und weist einen typischen metallischen Glanz auf. Charakteristisch ist der #Moschusgeruch, den die Tiere über ein Sekret aus den Hinterbrustdrüsen absondern können.

The musk beetle (Aromia moschata)
This musk-scented longhorned beetle is the only specimen of the genus Aromia in Europe. As a typical representative of the #buck #beetles, the #muskbeetle can be easily recognized by its elongated body shape (length 20-35 millimetres) and long antennae. The body color varies from light green to almost black and has a typical metallic sheen. A characteristic feature is the #musky #odor, which the animals can excrete via a secretion from the rear mammary glands.

This evening I noticed a clump of large carpenter ants (_Camponotus_), normally frantic, just standing around. A closer look revealed they were tending to giant willow aphids (_Tuberolachnus salignus_)!

Six-banded Longhorn Beetle

This rare longhorn beetle lives in old hardwood forests, usually in large, very old and decaying trees with scarred and cracked bark.

Its sparse and widely scattered populations in the eastern U.S. have been declining sharply for years, and it is listed as threatened in some states.

After growing underground for 17 years, the larvae climb into daylight, shed their skin one last time, and go in search of mates as an adult insect. They then live for only a few weeks.

The population that appeared in spring 2021 belongs to "Brood X" ("Brood 10"), also called "Great Eastern Brood". They will be back again in 2038.
