  1. πŸπŸ† #WildlifeWednesday

The current strategy to save endangered species in North America is to build back populations to a level that avoids extinction, then support stops.

🐻 Three North American species: gray wolves, grizzly bears and bison are examples of how local restrictions after they reached minimal levels prevented the species to thrive.

πŸͺΆ Restrictions also limit ability of indigenous people to maintain a cultural connection.

πŸ“ˆ A better conservation strategy would be to measure success by creating a thriving population participating in its natural habitat. But this would require a new vision and policies.

  8. "Always On The Move" for #WildlifeWednesday & #MeerMittwoch

Twentyone Sanderlings (Calidris alba) and an incoming wave. These little birds (winter visitors to our beaches) forage in the intertidal zone, pulling small creatures out of the soft sand. They are always on the move, running away with each incoming wave, and then straight back in.

  9. Rare β€˜Cloud Jaguar’ Was Spotted for the First Time in a Decade

πŸ†A jaguar has been recorded roaming through a mountain range in Honduras for the first time in a decade, offering hope for the animal’s conservation.

πŸŒ‰ Also shows that protected wildlife corridors are working.

  10. Last year on a solo outing to my favourite spot to photograph black bears catching salmon at the mouth of a river on Vancouver Island, I heard a blow coming from the sea. I turned around and saw a pod of orcas passing by very close to the shore.

  11. Coyote
    Petroglyph National Monument, NM

Sort of a twist on #WildlifeWednesday if you will allow it.

Not unusual to hear these tricksters engaging in song down in the bosque and on occasion they will sing a chorus or two in the yard. Last night they decided to stage an entire opera outside my bedroom at 2:30am.

I finally had to get up to turn on the floodlights, which usually does the trick, but last night I had to pound on the glass to move the three of them along. Sigh.

Never did get back to sleep. I'm looking forward to a nice nap this afternoon.

  12. πŸ₯Ύ We hiked past a water impoundment that is usually disruptive to a mountaintop environment, but this one was full of salamanders!

🦎 These amphibians prefer cold, clean, running water as in pristine streams. This pond had to be relatively undisturbed.

πŸ“· I stayed still and got a pic of a Spotted Salamander as it floated into a sunny spot. Love the orange spots!
