Very excited to launch a new article category at Insect Conservation and Diversity advocating evidence-based insect conservation!
#ConservationNotes is a new forum for researchers, practitioners, naturalists and other experts and enthusiasts to publish small-scale rigorous research that contributes explicitly to the conservation of insects.

First sighting of a Monarch this Spring!
I have several plantings of Butterfly Weed (Asclepius tuberosa) for them to enjoy, but mainly to lay their eggs on. The plants are just now starting to bloom.
🦋 It is very relaxing to sit on my porch and watch butterflies. Just had plant native perennials years ago.
🦋 Related: Carrie Haubner, co‑founder of the Queen City Pollinator Project in Kentucky, tagged a Monarch with a lightweight sticker.
🦋 That Monarch was later found at a Monarch reserve in Mexico. That's a 1600-mile trek! Also feeds into useful conservation dataset.
🦋 Protecting their habitat and increasing populations of their host plant is important. Get involved if you can!

Monarch Watch (Habitat 🌄)
Monarch Watch is a volunteer-based citizen science organization that tracks the fall migration of the monarch butterfly. It is self-described as "a nonprofit education, conservation, and research program based at the University of Kansas that focuses on the monarch butterfly, its habitat, and its spectacular fall migratio...

Kicking off with Michael Samways explaining what works and what doesn't in South African insect conservation. Including recovery from fire, removal of invasive trees, and role of bioacoustics in monitoring. #Ento24 #InsectConservation

Exciting collection of papers on new technologies for global insect monitoring. So much to learn about how to monitor insects effectively and accurately without relying on labour-intensive physical fieldwork, watch this space! #insectconservation https://royalsocietypublishing.org/toc/rstb/2024/379/1904

We need to support insect diversity in urban areas, but we still know very little about the #urbanecology of most insects because we have largely focused on perceived pests and economically important species.
Our editorial for this Special Issue at #InsectConservationandDiversity uses a structured literature search to frame the SI contents and highlight research priorities #insectconservation https://resjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/icad.12733

New blog: AI has huge potential for insect research. But on social media, does it help or hinder #scicomm? #insectconservation #biodiversity https://wp.me/pF3Q3-Th

Glad we could contribute to this book on the state of the world's #wildlife, including plants, #invertebrates and fungi! Our chapter summarises the #IUCNRedList coverage of #insects and highlights how much still needs to be done for #insectconservation #conservation #biodiversity #thelivingplanet

Excited to see this out in Insect Conservation and Diversity. Great work by #RoyalEntomologicalSociety
team! Over 200 entomologists collaborated in a multi-stage process to collate this set of priority challenges for research, funding and engagement in #entomology and #insectsciences #insectecology #insectconservation https://resjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/icad.12637 -
I wrote an article on the Northern Brown Argus project I did for my OU degree last year for @savebutterflies Scotland newsletter, it's in the latest one here:
https://butterfly-conservation.org/in-your-area/scottish-office/newslettersI'll be doing a short talk about it at the Scottish Recorders Gathering in Perth, Scotland on 18th March too.

Found this pretty golden mantid lacewing (Spaminta minjerribae) in our lounge room. One of the many thousands of #ozinverts for which we have a name but very little knowledge of its biology and ecology. #insectconservation

These kind of studies never get as much attention as the flawed 'global linear decline' narrative. But they are a good reminder that there's a lot of ecological complexity involved in measuring insect trends & results of single studies don't apply globally #InsectConservation #InsectApocalypse #InsectDeclines https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10841-022-00445-9

Something I've been thinking about a lot lately... How do we encourage more #Ecology undergrad students to pursue #InsectConservation #research pathways?
Undergrad #ecoevo courses are often vertebrate/plant focused and #entomology skills are rarely taught #HigherEd #TeachingEcology https://ecologyisnotadirtyword.com/2022/10/24/encouraging-undergraduate-ecology-students-into-insect-research/
