  1. Here we go, first day back in the office after the winter break, finally. Both the number of children AND the number of PhD students doubled during the past year. I guess we’ll soon figure out which balls are glass and which are plastic…🙈

  2. The winter vacation did not go as intended. First stomach flu, now influenza… but hooray again (and again and again, really, they are life savers!) for having supportive grandparents! What would we do without them, honestly, I don’t know. Happy new year to all grandparents! 🥳

Also, just noticing that my own Mastodon bubble is apparently very …uhm… male? Huh? How did that happen? Where are all those fantastic #womenInSTEM? And where is #Momademia? I’d love to connect to more #AcademicMums! So who else is juggling research and family life?

  4. Dear past me, thanks for your wise words, but it’s in fact easier said than done…

  5. It's just amazing how much you can achieve when nobody is sick. We had three weeks without illness and I think I finished more projects than in the half year before. Dear future me, please remember this and be kind to yourself during the winter months.

  6. Today I feel defeated. I pushed myself very hard, despite being sick, just to meet an important deadline tomorrow. I somehow managed to to get so so so close, but I won’t make it, because my child is now developing a fever. So no childcare, no submission and no relaxation tomorrow. Instead, it’s going to be another intense day without break and then more work waiting for me during the weekend to catch up. This is not sustainable. Please send good vibes.

  10. It was so predictable.

I blocked a whole week for writing, everything went well, and then my child got sick. Again. I’m so tired of this. 🥴🤮🤒

But also: hooray for having supportive parents-in-law!!! 🥳

  11. And last but not least thanks to my family - my mum who got me into neuroscience, my dad who has always been my mentor, my brothers for nerdy conversations, my wonderful kids for inspiring me, delighting me and making me see developmental psychology through new eyes (#mothersInScience #momademia #academicMums) and my partner for supporting me every single step along the way when times were difficult and when times were fun. I look forward to this new adventure with you!

  16. Paper submitted! 🥳

This one is a major win because 3/4 of us are #AcademicMums. We fight with sleep deprivation, inconsistent childcare, countless illnesses and short-term contracts, so 1st author Franz Weyerer had to juggle our numerous work constraints on top of a challenging research project. But we made it work!

Here is our new #preprint showing how #coevolution of #mutualists accelerates or decelerates #pollinator extinction.

  17. Spent 2.5 hours today organising holiday care and childcare during upcoming conferences #AcademicMums 😭
Curious to hear how many hrs #AcademicDads spend organising before-school, after-school, and holiday care?

  18. Another summer of potentially futile #GrantWriting. At least I have a little helper this time to make it more bearable! #DP24 #AcademicParents #AcademicMums

  19. As a new academic parent it's easy to feel like a hindrance to your colleagues and workplace. But then I talk to students who are also parents and I realise how much they appreciate that I understand what they're juggling, and that's what matters. #AcademicParents #AcademicMums

  20. @SparrowRad ha! Yes it’s most definitely possible! I also had a baby half way through doing my PhD! You got this 💪 #womeninstem #AcademicMums
