I've said it before, and I'd say it again, pre-prints are great to bypass paywalls (esp. if your institute doesn't have an open-access agreement) and make sure your research gets out there.
Just make sure to update them after publication (or at least not if you didn't). -

LLMs Corrupt Your Documents When You Delegate
"Our large-scale experiment with 19 LLMs reveals that current models degrade documents during delegation: even frontier models (Gemini 3.1 Pro, Claude 4.6 Opus, GPT 5.4) corrupt an average of 25% of document content by the end of long workflows, with other models failing more severely."

🖥️ 🖋️ The Shrinking Landscape of Linguistic Diversity in the Age of Large Language Models
"We show that while the core content of texts is retained when LLMs polish and rewrite texts, not only do they homogenize writing styles, but they also alter stylistic elements in a way that selectively amplifies certain dominant characteristics or biases while suppressing others - emphasizing conformity over individuality."

What would be the best place to publish a #review of a #preprint available on the OSF? Ideally the review should be linked to the preprint, so that it shows up alongside it. Does @MetaROR or @prereview facilitate this? @CenterforOpenScience

The #ai tariff we must all pay for Sam, Elon, Zuck and various other pathologically needy people we're supposed to soothe shows up everywhere. And it's not only money, but the time of our lives-- which comes in a limited supply.
"Philip Cohen, a sociologist at the University of Maryland in College Park who co-founded the SocArXiv preprint server in 2016, says that moderation at SocArXiv operates in a similar way to desk rejections at journals, in which manuscripts are rejected without being sent for peer review. But he makes it clear that the moderators are screening submissions rather than judging their quality. “Is this basically the shape of a scientific paper, can we identify these people? That’s the level of scrutiny we’re giving them.”
Cohen, who was interviewed as part of Chtena’s and Fleerackers’ study, says that he sometimes has to moderate the moderators, asking them to “dial back their reviewing a little” because personal interest or curiosity can come into play.
He also acknowledges that moderation has evolved. Originally, SocArXiv moderated preprints only after they were posted online, but that changed quickly because many manuscripts were being uploaded with “messed-up metadata”, he says.
The uptick in junk science submitted to SocArXiv, probably generated by AI, has made things even more difficult and time-consuming, Cohen adds. And it’s taken its toll on the moderators. “It certainly has made it less fun — more like police work and less like helping people get their work out.”"

@Remittancegirl Looking at all the creators’ fascist eugenics ideas, I’m starting to think there really is full purpose behind it:
"Researchers at the City University of New York (Cuny) and King’s College London have published a paper on how various chatbots protect – or fail to safeguard – users’ mental health.Experts are increasingly warning that psychosis or mania can be fuelled by AI chatbots."

Interesting #preprint on automated reference-checking.
It "runs entirely on [one] machine (free public databases, a single consumer GPU, and open-weights models) with no [...] external services. The pipeline verifies that references exist, checks retraction status, compares metadata against canonical records, downloads and parses cited papers, verifies that they support the claims made about them, and [...] checks cited papers' own bibliographies. I was today years old when I learned that scientists from the 17th century had their own form of "preprints" to lay claim to ideas before they got them officially published.
Galileo wrote in a letter to Kepler "Haec immatura a me iam frustra leguntur o.y.", in English "These are now too young to be read by me".
*After* his work was formally published, he explained the anagram to Kepler:
"Cynthiae figuras aemulatur mater amorum" (The mother of love imitates the shape of Cynthia)
By sending the letter, Galileo could prove to Kepler and others that he had observed that Venus (mother of love) had phases like the moon (Cynthia), without giving Kepler a chance to scoop him before his own work was published.

Are scientific publications always right? Not necessarily.
That is why we teach students to critically assess every study. In our Plant Bioinformatics course, students tried to reproduce research on quinoa leaf pigmentation.

Hi #neuromastodon, today the latest preprint of an extremely cool, 100% Uruguay-based team has been released :mate:
A filopodia-based dendritic mechanosensory compartment in CSF-contacting neurons
There we show that, contrary to what zebrafish has taught, these spinal cord neurons from adult mice (CSF-cN) lack cilia. Furthermore, they show multiple filopodia and are able to sense mechanical stimuli through PKD2L1. That, and other nice stuff.
If you didn't know what to read this weekend, here you have it:

Hope you enjoy it.

🚨 new #preprint 🚨
The evolutionary emergence of #EcologicalNetworks has been studied for decades but usually focussing on one type of interaction at a time, even though organisms naturally engage in multiple interaction types simultaneously. The combined effect of different interaction types on diversification thus remains unclear - until now. 😜
I hope you enjoy reading this fascinating story about ecological #pleiotropy and how it shapes #diversification patterns!
