So I'm writing a project proposal for a literary creation grant with the Ontario Arts Council. This one is for a poetry collection tentatively called Blood, Stumps, and Thin-Shelled Eggs.
So much work, but if I get the grant, totally worth it.

Idly musing how the academic grantwriting system makes me posture as an academic hunter, when I'd much rather be an academic gatherer

Question to UK-based researchers:
- Did you successfully obtain a #Leverhume research project grant in the past and would you be willing to share your application with me?
- Did you successfully obtain a #MRC Career development fellowship and would you be willing to share your application with me?
Or generally would you have any advice on writing either of these? Any help will be much appreciated, especially on what level of detail we should use:) 🙏

Reno News & Review: Guest comment: Your nonprofit needs an AI policy—now. “Leaner nonprofits have a lot of reasons to leverage AI. Grant-writing and volunteer coordination are two areas in which I can see AI being quite helpful. The question isn’t about whether an organization is going to use AI; it’s about whether it does it with integrity and purpose. Set a policy now.”

Follow up to this…
Luckily, I also love revisions!
Neither of us knew that the grant report needed to be 500 words max, so all of the extra supporting examples I wrote about were really bogging things down 😅
Luckily, I cut out a good 350 words over half an hour and Audra was able to submit the report on time.
Yaaaaay! 🫠

Were the changes in the document that I just lost in the crash superior to the half-remembered changes I just rekeyed? I guess we'll never know! Onwards!

Just recieved reviewer comments on my proposal that include part of it is "charming" and I´m not sure if that is a compliment or not....

Got the idea maybe 2 weeks ago - (because i had pieces in my head for a while - maybe 6 months, and a manuscript near submission) - and this is a totally new possibility - will be terrific if we can do it (a new direction and no prelim data - but that's what the grant (ostensibly at least) supports. Anyways won't be bummed if it tanks but I did enjoy the mental burst and intensity of thinking and writing it up.
We'll see

Me: I have far too many meetings and am not actually getting productive work done
Also me: setting up a consortium-based project that will mean 20 hour long meetings in the proposal phase alone. Let alone if the thing actually is granted. But if this project actually happens it would be such a cool thing...
Sigh. I shall never learn.

ChatGPT 5 wrote me a grant proposal for my philosophy paper. I didn't ask for it.

👏 We’re thrilled to celebrate our consultant Grace Mayo! The Minnesota Department of Human Services recognized her recent grant submission for a client as a “highly scored, well-written proposal” and will be shared as a teaching tool for others.
We’re so proud of Grace’s expertise and the impact she brings to our clients’ work. 🌟
Way to go, Grace!

And this grant application (see thread above) is... 🥁 drumroll 🥁 rejected!
A relief, in a way 😮💨 (I still don't want to become a manager).
Kinda cool to see the excellent scores it got: 6/7 for most criteria assessed, 5/7 for one of them, overall score 6/7 (in this scoring system, 5 means "very good", 6 "excellent" and 7 "outstanding"). It also received glowing compliments in the short assessment paragraph.
So what killed it? Potential applications were not explained and developed enough for the taste of this funding agency. They recommend an industrial partner to strengthen the proposal. In a way, I take this as a compliment too, because I am much more interested in the basic science part of the proposal.
Next step for this proposal is to get trashed by the other funding agency I submitted it to last month. This other one funds basic research, but is so elitist that this proposal stands essentially no chance. I will know the outcome in fall.

Writing grant applications makes me very motivated about my research while also making me want to quit academia 😅 I would also like to have a friendly chat with whoever decided to set a grant deadline on the 8th of January 😒😭

Just answered that age old question: who is my target audience?

I think I would like to apply to this: https://asml.cyber.harvard.edu/asml-fellowship-program/
Because I think the project I'm working on is an excellent fit for the third and fourth focus areas (personalized safety and interoperable software infrastructure, respectively). Because two things (edit: FOUR! Four things. ah ah ah) I want:
1. User-by-user opt-in federation + user-by-user authorized viewings only.
2. 'Mixed' privacy mode: posts that are available for all, posts that are available for some, posts that are only available to people who were granted access at the time, etc.
3. Easy import/export from Mastodon, Misskey, and Wordpress, as well as CLI tools to dump out data/posts into AP JSON-LD. I'd also eventually like it to work with other stuff, such as Twitter archives, etc.
4. Not really directly relevant but I would like the things I write to serve as a springboard for other distributed projects.
I'll have to write up a two page project proposal, though. It's been a hot minute since I wrote up something like this, though. Also? My last application was for a grant/fellowship was unsuccessful... even though I later learned that my advisor mentioned the project off-handedly to someone who had been involved in that grant process, and they were like "whoa! that's exactly the kind of thing we want to fund! you should have applied!". So I don't think I'll be dusting off that PDF as a starting point...
Anyone have any hot tips for independently applying to a grant/fellowship program without the help of an advisor?

Grant application submitted, finally. The application portal of course had to freeze to scare the hell out of me within 2 hours of the deadline...
Happy to get back to the job I like (actual research).

A full day wasted cutting 57 characters to fit a stupidly rigid 5000 characters limit. Another day will be equally wasted on another section still 460 characters over the same limit. I am sick of this nonsense.
This leaves me with no inspiration whatsoever to write two sections that still need to materialize, and the deadline is in less than 48 hours now… Slow-motion train wreck… -
Interesting research alert! 🚨 Ever wondered if your academic institution's ranking affects how you write grant proposals? A study reveals that in #China, lower-status applicants create longer titles to compensate for perceived biases!
📚✍️ https://doi.org/10.1093/reseval/rvae039
Lower-status applicants tend to use more words in their grant titles, especially when applying for larger grants or in more competitive fields like Business Administration. 📊

🤔 "A random half of panelists were shown a CV and only a one-paragraph summary of the proposed #research, while the other half were shown a CV and a full proposal. We find that withholding proposal texts from panelists did not detectibly impact their proposal rankings"
