  1. PS: I’m extra excited because it’s the first time I’m conferencing without kids in… don’t know… many years.

And I have… feelings. So many feelings.

  2. Day 2 of my writing retreat. All non-parenting colleagues look exhausted. No idea what they did last night. By contrast, colleagues with small children at home (including myself) look like they are on vacation. Best night I had in years. Also, amazing science! 🤩

  3. PS: As it turns out, I did pack enough diapers and pacifiers and toys and baby food. It all went well. I think my little coworker had a lot of fun during the last days. If anyone wants to hear more about conferencing with a little one, then please DM me for more info! I would be more than happy to share my experiences!

  4. The program for the #GFÖ2025 / @gfoe conference is finally online! I'm very happy to see a whole session on species interactions and interaction networks! So exciting! 🤩

Btw, I'll attend together with my little coworker and my whole group. Who else is coming? We would love to talk about #Momademia, #TheoreticalEcology, #EcologcialNetworks and #EcoEvoFeedback! 😊

  5. 1. the whole trip was only possible because we have the best grandma, who met us in Osnabrück for two days of babysitting. The world needs more grandparents. Many, many more!

  6. My little #coworker and me got invited to the university of #Osnabrück, as guest speakers for the Maryam Mirzakhani Lecture. We are both very excited, because it’s our first trip by train! Let’s hope I packed enough diapers. And snacks. We need lots of snacks. Btw, the #seminar will be about #TheoreticalEcology and also about how to combine family and research. Let’s hope we’ll give a good example… 🙈

  7. Today is the opposite. The night was horrible, I can’t concentrate, it’s only lunchtime but I’m running out of steam. No idea how to make it through the day. Parenting is such a rollercoaster…

  8. Today my little coworker took a 2h nap and I got SO MUCH STUFF DONE! I guess becoming a parent is for scientists what training at high altitudes is for athletes.

  9. Being a group leader and a parent at the same time is such a crazy rollercoaster. Some days are wonderful, others are hell, you never know in advance and the amplitude is beyond imagination. This message was brought to you by: Sleep Regression. 😴

  10. The winter vacation did not go as intended. First stomach flu, now influenza… but hooray again (and again and again, really, they are life savers!) for having supportive grandparents! What would we do without them, honestly, I don’t know. Happy new year to all grandparents! 🥳

  11. Oof. I feel so stressed. So many projects were supposed to be done before the winter break (haha) but they ALL decided to develop a life of their own and haunt me during vacation.
    Argh. Sigh.

(But: the biggest goal for this year was to simply stay in the game and keep my group running, together with my little coworker, and we totally nailed that!)

„The academic structure … makes planning for a family feel like an impossible luxury.“

I’ve been there. It somehow worked out for us, yes, but there was so much luck involved. I wish it would have been easier.

Also, just noticing that my own Mastodon bubble is apparently very …uhm… male? Huh? How did that happen? Where are all those fantastic #womenInSTEM? And where is #Momademia? I’d love to connect to more #AcademicMums! So who else is juggling research and family life?

  14. Happy semester start for those who celebrate! The first session of my #ComputationalEcology course went surprisingly well, given all the sickness related chaos in the background. Winter semester with small kids is so much fun, isn't it? 🤧 🤒 😷

  15. It is a truth universally acknowledged, that if you set aside a day to work on a really exciting project, one or more of your children will be at home sick

  18. 24h after the grandparent arrived: the fridge is stocked, the dinner is ready, the bike is repaired and the child is happy. The world needs more grandparents. Many more.

  19. I received an email last wk from a senior colleague inviting me to a seminar regarding teaching. It fell outside of my kiddo's nursery hrs so I replied explaining why I couldn't come. Colleague responded that she saw no reason why that should be barrier & actively encouraged me to come & bring my kiddo. I can't emphasise enough how immensely supportive & wonderful this was. I was so nervous going to the seminar, but everyone I've spoken to since then who was in attendance has told me that they didn't mind and it didn't impact on them negatively. THIS is what inclusive teaching & a supportive working environment looks like. THIS is what parent students NEED if having kids isn't going to be a barrier to education & career progression. Thank you

  21. Nothing prepared me for the bittersweet mixed feelings when you leave for a conference, finally, after such a long time, but your little one wants you to stay at home… Nothing. #Momademia.
Anyways, #ECEM23, I’m on my way!!

  22. Dropping L off at nursery this morning was horrific. She cried and ran back towards me and had to be scooped up by a member of staff. My heart cracked. I felt like a failure and that I was failing her. We turned the corner and looked through the window and she was already happy and smiling and distracted by the other kiddos and the prospect of breakfast. I know she’s fine. I know she’s better than fine and is enjoying herself and loving nursery. But the drop offs hurt so much and leave me feeling drowned in guilt.

  24. It's just amazing how much you can achieve when nobody is sick. We had three weeks without illness and I think I finished more projects than in the half year before. Dear future me, please remember this and be kind to yourself during the winter months.

  25. Today I feel defeated. I pushed myself very hard, despite being sick, just to meet an important deadline tomorrow. I somehow managed to to get so so so close, but I won’t make it, because my child is now developing a fever. So no childcare, no submission and no relaxation tomorrow. Instead, it’s going to be another intense day without break and then more work waiting for me during the weekend to catch up. This is not sustainable. Please send good vibes.

  26. Steps of organizing childcare because some academic work event is outside daycare hours, a thread: #academicparenting #academicparents #momademia @academicsunite
    1. Prioritize events I really need to participate in weeks and months in advance.
2.Clarify funding source and provider (again, because rules keep changing)
    3. Email family office
    4. Email event organizer about relevant details (online, offline, would they be able to provide help etc.)

  27. It was so predictable.

I blocked a whole week for writing, everything went well, and then my child got sick. Again. I’m so tired of this. 🥴🤮🤒

But also: hooray for having supportive parents-in-law!!! 🥳

  28. Btw, in academia we often take seminar speakers out for dinner, even though that’s not super family friendly. So here is the mom version: second breakfast, directly after Kita drop-off with ☕️ and 🥐

So happy to finally meet in person after a looong time of collaborating via zoom! 🥳

  32. How on earth do people concentrate when they face a deadline? My brain just goes bananas and the rest of my body tells me to run away as fast as I can...

Ah, and on top of everything daycare has reduced hours and closes at 12 because too many teaches are sick. This is not working. Aaaah!

  33. And last but not least thanks to my family - my mum who got me into neuroscience, my dad who has always been my mentor, my brothers for nerdy conversations, my wonderful kids for inspiring me, delighting me and making me see developmental psychology through new eyes (#mothersInScience #momademia #academicMums) and my partner for supporting me every single step along the way when times were difficult and when times were fun. I look forward to this new adventure with you!

  34. I tried a new thing and it’s an absolute game changer for me as #AcademicMama: I started using an app to track my working hours.

I never did that before because I thought it would stress me out even more. But it’s in fact super relaxing! There is obviously always more work waiting for me but time tracking gives me a sense of „enough for today“ in an ocean of unfinished projects. And guess what? Suddenly there is also time for other things…

Dear #Momademia, what other life hacks did I miss?

  35. Today I’m trying really hard to be kind to myself. No, I did not manage to finish the work that I promised to finish. It’s still sitting there on my desk, half done, accusingly staring at me. But I did invest the hours that I get payed for and that has to be enough, especially after a rough week with little sleep and a sick toddler at home. Time for weekend. Work can wait.

  36. Hey #epiverse / #Momademia / #momademic friends. I have some money to spend down from my K01 award before my nce expires. What's a small work "luxury" that has made your life better?

  37. Man, if I were a preschooler, I'd be very concerned about the possibility of Christmas being canceled. It's the plot of all the movies! #Momademia #academicmama

  38. The #sfe2gfoe2022 / #EcologyMetz2022 conference has been wonderful! My head is full of new ideas, fresh inspiration and nice memories. I‘m sad that I’ll miss the last session but it’s time for me to head home. Can’t wait to see my little one… #Momademia

  39. The welcome reception at the annual #ecoevo #conference of SFE2 and @gfoe in Metz was awesome! So many nice colleagues and old friends in one place! I'm so much looking forward to the upcoming days!!!

(but first: handle all the feelings that come with being away from home and catch up on sleep! #Momademia)

  40. So far my experience with Mastodon is great. I really like it here! But I also miss my #SciMom bubble. Where are my fellow #MomsInScience? Where is #Momademia, #MothersInSTEM, #AcademicMothers or #AcademicParents in general?

Is there anyone who would like to reconnect after migrating over from Twitter?
