Stanley David McIntosh, born 2/5/1892, enlisted 31/1/1917 at Dunedin. He was to die of influenza on 10th September 1918 at sea.
The text from this information page, reads as follows:
"Stanley David McIntosh was recorded as having been born on 2 May 1892 in his enlistment, but NZ Birth records have his birth year as 1893, he is said to have been born at Woodlands. Often WW1 soldiers changed their birth year, mostly so they could fit certain criteria of age to serve. His parents were Robert and Ann Eliza McIntosh. He had an older sister, Helena Annie, married to Stephen William Lancelot Boreham, she was his next of kin on embarking.We find from Stanley’s military records, that he originally tried to enlist from Winton in Dec 1915, but at this point he was deemed medically unfit. He enlisted again on 31 January 1917 at Dunedin and was accepted. As the war progressed, standards for soldiers were loosened.
Although it has been difficult to find why Stanley is on any of the Waiau Memorial’s, he was certainly a Southland boy. His pre-war occupation was as a Jockey for one DR Jones, and he was found to have had a Jockey Licence issued from the Canterbury Racing Club. Before his enlistment, his most recent address had been Riverton. But there is no mention in his file or in any news of the day that has been found so far, to connect him to the Waiau Districts.
It is also noted that Stanley had served with the 8th Southland Regiment, Territorials and that he was still serving with them on enlistment. He embarked on HMNZT 107 Tahiti on 10/7/1918, a Private with the NZ Infantry, 40th Reinforcements, with A Company of the NZEF. But he never saw active service, as on 10/9/1918, Stanley died at sea of influenza, on his way to Plymouth England, with the 40th Reinforcements.
Tragically, this contingent were struck so severely with influenza, right across the group of troopships used (bar one) and the number of deaths on board was so high, that a special enquiry was ordered into the epidemic on the troopships. Total deaths were 74, with 68 dying at sea and another 6 ashore. Others were taken to hospital and some of those died also. Reports said that crew members also passed away from the flu. A terrible loss of life. He ended up being buried across the sea, at the Plymouth (Efford) Cemetery, Devon, UK. His medals were sent to his father Robert McIntosh, who was farming at Waianiwa at the time."

Here in SW Pennsylvania we have had a huge year for Chicken of the Woods. I have had far more than I can use. Does anyone know of a good way to preserve them?
I dehydrate chanterelles but these seem too thick for it to work well. I suppose I could thinly slice them.
Has anyone had any luck?

It is a big year for Monarch Butterflies. We have several stands of swamp milkweed being eaten by hordes of the striped caterpillars. Hopefully we will find a chrysalis to watch develop.
