  1. Der Achtjährige trällert KPop Demon Hunters und baut dabei die paar englischen Wörter ein, die er so kennt: digital humanities, tenure track, … 😅
🎶 What does it feel like, digital humanities? 🎶

  2. Omg the teen has a dorm room for university starting next month 🥳 #academicParenting from a different perspective 😄

  3. It is a truth universally acknowledged, that if you set aside a day to work on a really exciting project, one or more of your children will be at home sick

  4. I wrote a blog about becoming a parent, dealing with post-partum anxiety, buying a lot of yarn, and creating a crocheted blanket charting my parenting . . . an eclectic mix.

  5. Happy #WorldFencingDay2023! 🤺 I'm glad my son enjoys the sport and it gives me 2 hours of uninterrupted reading time when I need to catch up on refereeing or some challenging sketching practice.

  6. Planned to spend the 3 weeks before vacation prepping for fall classes. So of course kiddo #2 brought home preschool plague. Kiddos home for a week, me down for the count for 2 more weeks

Now it's <1week until the semester, camps are over so there's no child care. I'm entertaining kiddo #1 all day & working frantically late every night after bedtime to *try* to get ready. I'm going to be burned out before the semester even starts 😩😩😩 #AcademicMom #AcademicParenting #parenting #MomLife

  7. Today's reading is 'Transnational Solidarity' by Carol C. Gould, 2007, 'Self-Respect, Excellences, and Shame' by Rawls, 1971, and lastly, a WIP paper by Derek Edyvane (2023/24 forthcoming) which I'm by far enjoying the most! #reading #academicreading #academicmastodon #AcademicChatter #academicparenting #phdlife #solidarity #citizenship #politicaltheory

  8. Hey, I'm now a fosstodon.org person - mastodon.scot was a great server, but I mainly used Twitter as a work vehicle and I think I'm better off treating the fediverse in the same way. I am really interested in , and recently I've gotten very passionate about In my spare time, such as there is, I'm a big crafter and also enjoy fiction.

  9. Steps of organizing childcare because some academic work event is outside daycare hours, a thread: #academicparenting #academicparents #momademia @academicsunite
    1. Prioritize events I really need to participate in weeks and months in advance.
2.Clarify funding source and provider (again, because rules keep changing)
    3. Email family office
    4. Email event organizer about relevant details (online, offline, would they be able to provide help etc.)

  10. Kids are in bed. 4yo birthday celebrations are over (for today). Time to sip champagne and read about codon bias for tomorrow's lab meeting!

Ngl this stiff is FASCINATING!! Can't wait to hear what my students think

  11. It was so predictable.

I blocked a whole week for writing, everything went well, and then my child got sick. Again. I’m so tired of this. 🥴🤮🤒

But also: hooray for having supportive parents-in-law!!! 🥳

  12. Frantically trying to get some writing done while 7yo is telling her toys that "at least YOU always have time for me" (insert side-eye in direction of working mum). She knows which buttons to push. #AmWriting #AcademicParenting

  13. Literally one of the best moments in the life of a bookish mum: when kids learn how to read. Yesterday 7yo VERY seriously worked her way through two chapters of a book she has borrowed from school library & it was the cutest (also: school libraries ftw!). #AcademicParenting

  14. 7yo accidentally spilled some glitter (who am I kidding: lots). This means I will now find glitter EVERYWHERE for the next 2 years or so. There goes my professionalism, guess I will be known as "the prof who sparkles" (not in a sexy vampire sense of the word). #AcademicParenting

  15. Our little one is currently obsessed with these two books, demanding that we keep reading them again and again 😂 This is ok with me though as they are both great kids books IMO

  16. *whiny privilege alert*

I truly love my job. I still feel like getting a TT job at a PUI was basically winning the lottery & my dept & students are the absolute best

    BUT

I hate how finals & grades being due right before Christmas (12/23) turns the holidays into the most stressful time of my year. I want to bake cookies! Sing carols! Sip cocoa in front of the fire! Not grade until I'm bleary-eyed and then wrap until 4am

    Cue the tiny violins

  25. Today I asked my husband to pick up our son from child care so I could stare at the wall in silence for 20 minutes, uninterrupted. Promised I’d do the same for him tomorrow. If you’re a FT working parent, this is love right here. #parenting #academicparenting #kids #workingmom #marriage

  26. Half of the kids in my 12yo's class have a "cold". 10/25 were sick home on Friday. 12yo now has a positive LFT, & I'm sure she is not the only one with Covid. Don't tell me this is "over". Yes, I'm mad. And worried. And frantically trying to move classes online for next week. #AcademicParenting

  27. Lots of coloured spaghetti, dozens of shrink foil test tubes, and 16 urine cups of glittery slime later 😅. Nobody cried, so I'm calling this science birthday a win. #AcademicParenting

  28. Almost ready for 7yo's "science" birthday - wish us luck! #AcademicParenting

  29. Got home very late, was woken up very early by a VERY excited 7yo. Now setting up an asynchronous session for my class today (and yes, I'm grateful that this is possible - in pre-pandemic times I would have missed most of my kid's birthday). #AcademicParenting

  30. Yesterday in #AcademicParenting: lots of tears because I was home so little last week (basically only home on Sunday) and the Monday commute was already so close. So today I left with one of 6yo's books and will read to her in the evening. Other parenting hacks, long term commuters?

  31. I might just opt for event management in my next life as it seems to be 60% of what I am doing anyway (the other 60% is e-mails, obvs, plus the 30% the commute takes up). #AcademicParenting

  32. Next week will be hard for the family. I will in Cologne Mo-Wed & then conferencing in Salzburg Thu-Sat. Told 6yo I would get her sth from Salzburg as a treat & described Mozartkugeln (pistachio, marzipan, nougat) thinking she would love it, but with impeccable kiddo logic she wants sth salty 🤣. Salty snacks from Austria - tips, anyone? #AcademicParenting

  33. CW: parenthood & academia

@oliviodare @academicchatter @academicsunite Hi there! Not an ECR anymore but a mum of 2 (6 and 12). I did tweet quite a lot about #AcademicParenting as a way to vent & to share and will definitely do the same on here.
