  2. RE: mastodon.green/@plazi_species/

#Beetles of the genus #Callistethus (#Rutelinae, #Scarabaeidae) are mainly distributed across the #tropics and #subtropics of #Asia, as well as Central and South #America. Ming-Zhi Zhao (2026) described four #newspecies within the #Callistethus #auronitens species complex, assigned two species to the genus Callistethus, and elevated two subspecies to full species status. #Biodiversity

  4. We found a new friend this morning. Meet the great diving beetle. OH rescued him from the hens' water (the hens were worryingly interested) and we put him in a pond where he'll be much happier.

  5. Had an excellent moth trap at Bath City Farm yesterday. I'll post photos of the moths tomorrow, but first here's some of the non-moths we caught. Most excitingly, a Bombardier Beetle, the first time I've ever seen one! This uncommon beetle famously ejects a noxious spray around 100 degrees C as a defensive mechanism. Also found Acorn Weevil, Birch Shieldbug & Red-legged Shieldbug

  6. The ringed tortoise beetle (Ischnocodia annulus), also known as the golden target beetle, is a small leaf beetle in the family Chrysomelidae. It is native to Central and South America.
    Strange and unique traits:
Its shell spreads out wide to cover its head and legs completely, making it look like a mini tortoise. The bright, metallic shine comes from light bouncing off wet layers. Its young create waste shields.

  7. Nicrophorus vespillo or the Rove Beetle (sometimes called the burying beetle) found in the stinky sludge at the bottom of our now empty water butt. A fine set of colours and shiny shell. I hope they find other sludge in which to reside very soon…

  8. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🪱🦴 Superworm larvae strip flesh from #animal #skeletons faster than traditional methods, cleaning delicate #bones in hours to days without damage.

Cared for on a vegetable diet, the reusable #larvae could serve #museums that lack the space or funding for dermestid beetle colonies.

  9. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🪲🏴‍☠️ Two new rove beetle species with unusually long mandibles and antennae reminded researchers of the stretchy hero Luffy from #OnePiece, so they named a whole new genus after him.

The scientists at the Natural #History #Museum of #Denmark traced these #beetles to #Yunnan, #China and northern #Laos, and place them as a missing link in their group’s family tree.

Oil beetle larvae #smell like #flowers to manipulate #bees
The European oil beetle's parasitic larvae emit a floral #scent that attracts wild bees. This allows the larvae to sneak into the bees' nests
