September 14, 2024London CNN — "As #RightWing rioters attacked communities with #racist violence across parts of the UK last month, 22-year-old #ClimateActivist #CressieGethin sat in a prison cell.
"Her crime? Organizing a disruptive protest against new government-granted licenses to drill for oil — a planet-heating #FossilFuel — in the #NorthSea.
"In late July, a London court found #Gethin and four other members of the #JustStopOil activist group guilty of 'conspiring intentionally to cause a #PublicNuisance,' after recruiting protesters to climb structures along the M25 — a major ring road around London — bringing traffic to a standstill in parts over four days in November 2022.
"Prosecutors alleged that the protests, organized over a #ZoomCall, disrupted more than 700,000 drivers, caused economic damage of over £760,000 ($980,000) and racked up £1 million ($1.3m) in policing costs.
"Now Gethin and three others — Louise Lancaster, #DanielShaw and #LuciaWhittakerDeAbreu, who planned the disruption on the call — are serving four-year jail terms, while Just Stop Oil co-founder #RogerHallam was given five years. All are appealing.
"The sentences are believed to be the longest in the UK’s history for #nonviolent protest and were delivered under two new controversial laws that supercharged #policing powers to crack down on disruptive protests, even when they are peaceful.
"They place the act of planning a 'public nuisance' event, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, on a similar footing as #ViolentCrimes like robbery, for which punishments range from community service to 12 years’ jail, or rape, which is four to 19 years.
"The judge — who in court referred to the activists as '#extremists' — justified the long jail terms because all five activists had previously been convicted of one or more offenses in relation to direct action protest. Each were on bail for another set of proceedings when the Zoom call took place. He also noted people missed important doctor’s visits and funerals because of the protest.
"But activists like Gethin say their demonstrations are proportionate to the problem at hand — a rapidly warming world that threatens to transform life as we know it, through deadly #ExtremeWeather events and by pushing #ecosystems to their brinks. They are now battling the bolstered powers of the #police and courts to get their point across.
“'A very harsh sentence like this doesn’t make sense morally or legally — but it does make sense politically,' Gethin told CNN in a handwritten letter from HMP Bronzefield, a women’s prison just south of London’s Heathrow Airport.
"The laws have drawn criticism from the UN’s special rapporteur on #EnvironmentalDefenders, #MichaelForst, who said not only do they criminalize peaceful protest, but they are being enforced in 'punitive and repressive' ways."

We need the #BCgovernment to get the message from concerned communities across B.C. that we must work together and with urgency to #protect #OldGrowthForests and #reform #forestry practices. To do so, the next steps are crucial:
#StopLogging in the most at-risk #OldGrowth #forests, and other #ecosystems identified by First Nations, by providing promised funding for #LoggingDeferrals.
Provide full #FinancialSupport to #FirstNations for long-term #IndigenousLed #conservation solutions, including #compensation for lost revenues and employment.
Move away from the “all or nothing” approach common in forestry practices across B.C. and most evident in #ClearcutLogging. In its place, work with First Nations, local residents, industry and other stakeholders to implement forestry practices that prioritize important values like #biodiversity, #habitat, #WaterRetention, #Indigenous #CulturalUse, and #tourism.

1/ Ich war heute bei der #GeoBerlin2023. Als die Geolog*innen bei den Vorträgen waren, war in der Halle nicht viel los und ich habe mich lange mit einer Mitarbeiterin von #WintershallDEA unterhalten. Sie betreute einen Stand mit der Universität #Bergen. Es ging um #CSS. Das war alles höchst interessant. Dort war ein Modell zu sehen, in das CO2 eingeführt wurde (orange im Bild, blau ist Wasser und dunkel und körnig Gesteinsschichten). Sie hat mir erzählt, dass das CO2 dann in Wasser gelöst wird. In diesen porösen Steinschichten.
Man kann entweder neue Lagerorte finden und benutzen oder man benutzt Orte, in denen früher Gas oder Öl war. Es wird wohl schon seit dreißig Jahren CO2 in Öl- und Gasfelder eingepumpt, damit dann auf der anderen Seite, wo man Öl und Gas fördern will, der Druck hoch ist. Das ist also ein Kreislauf. Blöd daran ist nur, dass das CO2 in der Atmosphäre ja weniger werden muss, und wenn man das schon immer gemacht hat, dann nützt das ja nichts, wenn man CO2 loswerden will.
Ich habe nach den Kapazitäten gefragt und ob es prinzipiell unbeschränkte Lagermöglichkeiten gäbe oder ob es da zu Problemen kommen könne. Sie meinte, in der Nordsee gäbe es #Kapazitäten und auch onshore. Ein Mann, der bei uns stand (weiß nicht ob von DEA oder von einer Uni), meinte, dass UK eine Kapazität von 80 Mrd. Tonnen hätte. Er klang ganz begeistert, aber ich war nicht beeindruckt, denn wir pusten ja im Jahr so 60 GT raus, d.h. wir müllen als Welt alle potentiellen Lagerstätten in UK und Küstengebieten in ein bisschen mehr als einem Jahr zu.
Ansonsten kannte sie sich gut aus mit den Szenarien im IPCC-Report und dass das CCS schon in den meisten Szenarien eingepreist ist.
Sie hat auch gesagt, dass wir reduzieren müssen. So viel ist klar. Und nur das verpressen, was nicht ohne CO2-Ausstoß funktioniert, der Rest muss anders gelöst werden.
Wir haben über die DEA und Öl gesprochen, das die ja sicher weiterfördern will, und ob man das denn brauche. Sie hat darauf hingewiesen, dass das nicht so einfach sei, denn alles um uns herum ist schließlich aus Erdöl. Meine Turnschuhe, mein Rucksack, die Tische usw.
Zum Fracking meinte sie, es gäbe zwei Arten und die schlechte sei ja in Deutschland verboten. Wir waren uns einig, dass das, was wir importieren, zum Teil gefrackt ist.
Ich habe sie nach Argentinien gefragt und ob sie #EstebanServat kenne, der in Argentinien wegen Aktivismus gegen Fracking verfolgt wurde. Kannte sie nicht.
Ich habe noch mal nach dem neuen Öl gefragt und ob man es nicht so machen könnte, wie #JustStopOil es vorschlägt: Einfach keine neuen Vorkommen mehr erschließen. Die alten kann man ja noch eine Weile ausbeuten. Dann regelt das mit den Kunststoffen der Markt. In der Restlaufzeit werden dann schon Ersatzstoffe für Turnschuhe gefunden werden.
