Once treated as a city dumping ground, the #waterway lost #otters and #beavers to #pollution and #habitat loss. Decades of cleanup restored #oysters and beavers, now joined by this otter signaling active #ecosystem recovery.

"#DavidHirshberg never had a brother. His three sons do, and #Hirshberg says all three are among each other’s best friends. For his latest #novel, “#CrossingtheBronx” (Fig Tree #Books), Hirshberg went in the opposite direction: two brothers find themselves on opposing sides of a fight over the construction of the #CrossBronxExpressway.
“Crossing the Bronx” is Hirshberg’s third novel and the final #book in his Mid-Century #Trilogy, following “#MyMother’sSon” (2018) and “#JacobosRainbow” (2021).
The novel is set in 1952 and centers on Jay deVenezia, a 23-year-old, six-foot-five-inch #Italian #Jew from the #Bronx, and his older brother, Eric “Bud” deVenezia. Eric is muscular, intimidating and at ease among the neighborhood toughs who surround their father, Ike. Jay works at a record store and is drawn more to books, music and #Hebrew study."

So, when my wife got her passport, the post office conveniently lost her naturalization certificate. When she got a new one issued, the new one mysteriously disappeared in the mail too, even though it was sent certified mail. It seems like there's some organized thing going on in the #Bronx where people are stealing naturalization certificates being sent through #USPS.

"In tandem with naming Mr. #Najmi to helm the advisory committee, Mr. #Mamdani issued an #executiveorder that he said was intended to expand the pool of #judicial appointments and create a “merit-based, independent, fair, and publicly credible” process.
The executive order from Mr. Mamdani said committee membership “shall reflect the cosmopolitan population of the City of #NewYork.” Members serve four-year terms, except for members appointed at the recommendation of deans of #law schools, who serve for two years.
That promise contained in the executive order was not fulfilled, according to the four #Jewish #lawyers’ groups that signed the letter.
“To have no #Jews on the committee that’s selecting #NewYorkCity judges is pretty remarkable,” said #MatthewJKluger, the president of the #Bronx County Jewish #BarAssociation. “It certainly sends a strong message.”
