  1. Apparently some people waited 8 hours in TSA lines at Kaua'i's airport yesterday as it was knocked off-grid, running limited equipment off generators.

People still had to do the dumb airport dance of taking their shoes off, laptop out of the bag, etc. No provision for more streamlined screening after a natural disaster because of course not.

  2. In today's video we check into why there have been zero Atlantic #hurricanes in 2026, #Borneo fires, #Hawaii hurricanes, and a snowy Andes as El Nino strengthens #ElNino #ElNino2026 #YouStormOutlook youtu.be/ou116ILDwms

A Tiger shark does not normally encounter food that punches back on the nose. That guy was lucky. Because he was on a board, likely the shark mistook the board for the silhouette of a delicious large slow moving fish. The turbulence of the Hurricane Lowell waves probably added to the shark's aggressive behavior.

You should have caution and respect for sharks, not just fear. 🤙

  5. Interesting phenomenon living through my first hurricane: I didn't have any connectivity beyond SMS and a tiny sometimes trickle of data for about two days. "FB Lite" choked lol. So I kept hearing from friends thousands of miles away telling me how bad the photos and video looked while I was sitting at home 15 miles from the worst damage and wouldn't see any of that footage for another day or so. They were better informed than I was...at least visually. It was a little disorienting.

Also: People were almost literally wandering around my neighborhood going, WIFI GIMME WIFI. Yes, the wifi zombies emerged quickly.

  11. Feeling fortunate my house only lost a few shingles in Hurricane Lowell. Yesterday I didn't see much in the way of photos or videos from the rest of the island (cell towers were not really handling data) but had started to hear about extensive damage on the south and west sides of Kaua'i. Now I'm seeing more and it looks pretty bad. The utility is saying they hope to have more residential areas back on power by the end of the week but they first have to repair the transmission lines, many of which are in remote areas.

So... basically camping at home for a while.

  13. The galaxy pair is also known as "Nā ʻUhane Māhoe Huki Pū i ke Ola" (“Twin Spirits Pulling Together Creating Life"). The name was chosen by a trio of high school interns who helped direct the creation of this image using the Gemini North observatory.
