  1. Hawaii has often dodged the path of hurricanes. Why did it see so many storms this summer?
    By Gabrielle Canon

Despite its location, the island chain has avoided the worst effects, but Hurricanes Lowell and Lala left a trail of damage this year

  2. Feeling fortunate my house only lost a few shingles in Hurricane Lowell. Yesterday I didn't see much in the way of photos or videos from the rest of the island (cell towers were not really handling data) but had started to hear about extensive damage on the south and west sides of Kaua'i. Now I'm seeing more and it looks pretty bad. The utility is saying they hope to have more residential areas back on power by the end of the week but they first have to repair the transmission lines, many of which are in remote areas.

So... basically camping at home for a while.

  8. check out this very nice video about the hawai'i 'ulu (breadfruit) co-operative: youtube.com/watch?v=IWelf-6NGQc

my bf is a breadfruit farmer and a member of the co-op. i've been to their kona processing facility - which was really amazing!

the folks who run the co-op are top notch, and i'm so happy that the co-op exists!

the stuff they sell at the supermarket is unfortunately quite expensive, but hopefully with further development, the price will come down.

they offer two features that are very important for local farmers: if you're a member, they will buy your product at a guaranteed minimum price if you bring them a certain minimum amount of harvest. and, they quickly process (usually freezing) the breadfruit so that it can be sold to the end-consumer without the time pressure of a rapidly-ripening breadfruit.

also, here's a nice civil beat article about 'ulu production in hawai'i: civilbeat.org/2026/09/ulu-on-t

the most interesting piece of info in the article?:

"American Samoa produced almost 2.5 million pounds in 2023...

Less than 5% of American Samoa’s breadfruit harvest — worth about $150,000 — was sold that year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That’s because breadfruit is mostly consumed by tree owners and the wider community as part of an informal sharing economy." 💪
