  2. August 18, 1920 - Women throughout the U.S. won the right to vote when the Tennessee legislature approved the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution (the last of 36 states then required to approve it). An amendment for universal suffrage was first introduced in Congress in 1878, and Wyoming had granted suffrage in state law by 1890.

This amendment to enfranchise all American women had been introduced annually for 41 years without passage; it had gotten two-thirds of both houses of Congress to approve it just the year before.

“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”

In the Tennessee House, 24-year-old Representative Harry Burn surprised observers by casting the deciding vote for ratification. At the time of his vote, Burns had in his pocket a letter he had received from his mother urging him, "Don't forget to be a good boy" and "vote for suffrage."

  3. As Donald #Trump continues pushing for the "SAVE" voter-suppression law (which, remember, will prevent many - perhaps most - married women from voting), priming ICE, DHS, FBI and other agencies to engage in voter-intimidation at polling stations, trying to illegally block voting by mail which favours Democratic candidates, and everything else...

... remember that during his last presidential campaign, he stood up and told #christofascist audiences they would just have to vote for him once, and "then they would never have to #vote again".

It seems like that should be mentioned more often, not tossed down the memory hole.

  9. In 1881, the Isle of Man became the world’s first nation to grant votes to women in national elections, by removing the word ‘male’ from a Bill.

In January a proposition to remove the word passed by 16 to 3, in March the first women cast their votes.

  10. #Black Americans have carried extraordinary burdens in the #UnitedStates, not only to exercise their own rights but also to make the country a #democracy. The #VotingRightsAct, passed in 1965 & strengthened in the decades that followed, had protected them from #RacialGerrymandering that divided them across multiple districts to blunt the impact of their votes. This was just one of a multitude of tactics Southern officials used to limit Black #suffrage & stifle competition during #JimCrow.

"House passes Save America Act, Trump-backed bill to impose new voting rules

Bill that requires proof of citizenship and would limit mail-in voting passes 218-213 but faces uphill battle in Senate

    (. . .)

The Save America Act, introduced by Chip Roy of Texas this year, expands on changes to voting laws in the 2024 bill, adding a nationwide photo ID requirement to vote, with a list of acceptable identification that is stricter than many states that already have voter ID requirements. Student IDs are explicitly not allowed.

The Southern Poverty Law Center estimates that 21 million Americans neither have a copy of their birth certificate nor a passport. Those potential voters are more likely to be poor or people of color, the organization says.

'We’ve got to look at this in its totality,' said Rebekah Caruthers, president and CEO of Fair Elections Center. 'The whole point of this is to restrict who gets to vote in this country.'"
