Die Serie handelt davon, dass ein Rettungsnetzwerk namens "Emergency Rescue Commitee" in den Jahren 1940 und 1941 Menschen aus Nazi-Europa in die Vereinigten Staaten oder in andere sichere Länder brachte. Zuerst waren es nur Künstler, Intellektuelle, Wissenschaftler (unter anderem Hannah Arendt und Walter Benjamin (der die Flucht nicht überlebte, er starb währenddessen). Später suchten immer mehr Menschen nach der Hilfe dieses Rettungsnetzwerks auf der Flucht vor dem Faschismus.
