  21. #WWII Lt. Martin James Monti was desperately flying an unarmed, modified P-38 Lightning photo reconnaissance plane across the Italian Front. Monti was an Army Air Forces pilot, but he wasn't on a recon mission. He had stolen the plane and was headed for the Nazi-occupied city of Milan to defect to the German Army.

  22. July 21, 1951 #WWII NYT Martin James Monti, 30-year-old former Air Force flier, denied yesterday before Federal Judge Robert Inch in Brooklyn that he ever had applied for membership in the Schutzstaffel, the Nazi elite guard, while he was a prisoner of war.

When Monti landed the plane on the Nazi airfield on Oct. 13, 1944, he was captured as a regular prisoner of war, but soon convinced his captors that he was defecting. His plane was seized for intelligence purposes. From there, he was sent to Berlin.

  23. @Tarnport

These Tomato Plant paintings by Picasso are considered an resistance act against the Nazis because during the harsh occupation, food was scarce, and civilians were forced to grow their own produce—such as potted tomato plants—on windowsills and balconies to survive.

The thriving plant in his Paris studio became a powerful, earthy metaphor for the human spirit’s refusal to be crushed by war.
