HMS Spartan was a British light cruiser commissioned on 12 July 1943. In Jan 1944, Spartan was stationed off Anzio during Operation Shingle. On 29 Jan she was attacked by German aircraft using a guided bomb, probably a Henschel Hs 293 radio-controlled glide bomb. Xa Loi Pagoda in #Saigon was a hub of opposition to the Diem #USPuppet government. In 1963, Diem had his domestic terrorists attack the monastery. They arrested 1,400 monks, nuns & patriarch.
In 1963, faced with a coup, Diem tried to escape from the tunnels under one of his houses [now the Ho Chi Minh City Museum] to the perceived safety of Cha Tam Church in Cholon. Here he was captured and assassinated.
The #coup was staged by the #USA, the same USA who had brought him to power.

Some folks don't understand why I had no faith in UN helping Palestinians or Lebanese or Syrians stop the terrorism by Israel invaders. The above is why. If Vietnam had waited for UN to do the right thing - I'd likely had never been born because my family would have all been slaughtered. I support resistance fighters/revolutionaries who fight for liberation & sovereignty of their peoples. Those are the brave warriors who fought so people like my family could live.
Maybe more folks will start to understand why war survivors of foreign occupation/invaders do not trust/have faith in the UN.

The #UN failed our peoples in Vietnam - just like they've failed everywhere else because the UN protects capitalist imperial interests over #sovereignty of nations & it's never really had much enforcement teeth.
One of the outcomes of the DMZ was Ngo Dinh Diem’s regime in South Vietnam. Prime Minister of South Vietnam when the DMZ was drawn, in 1955 he proclaimed the country Republic of Vietnam and made himself its President. All with the help of the USA.
The latter’s intelligence had revealed 80 percent of Vietnamese were in favour of Ho Chi Minh. Which translated to a communist regime should General Elections take place. Pro-US, autocratic, Catholic, and anti-Buddhist, Diem ensured the UN-mandated elections never happened.
He also liked the good life. His Independence Palace in #Saigon came with a night-club and private helipad on the top floor, and bunkers deep in the bowels of the earth under the building.
Meanwhile, a stratum of Vietnamese society who were unhappy with Diem’s rule, and were pro-Ho Chi Minh, decided to go underground in 1961. Literally. Known as the #NationalLiberationFront, the guerilla force functioned from subterranean tunnels and jungle cover. They were determined to overthrow South Vietnam’s Diem government and unify Vietnam under #communism. The US called them #VietCong.

Among the Nazi collaborators who came to Canada was Volodymyr Kubiovych, a Ukrainian who helped organize the SS Galicia division of Ukrainian volunteers opposed to Russia’s advance. He was editor-in-chief of the Encyclopedia of Ukraine compiled at the University of Alberta, but died in France in 1985. A photograph of a parade in Lviv, Ukraine, in July, 1943, shows Mr. Kubiovych making a Nazi salute alongside Otto Wächter, a senior member of the SS who also served as governor of Galicia and Krakow.
In 2023, there was an outcry after a veteran of the Nazi-led Galicia SS division Yaroslav Hunka, received two standing ovations in the House of Commons during a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

@mathew Somewhat. Of the set mentioned, Weissenbacher's Sources of Power does the most to tie both energy needs and energy capabilities to political and military events and history. Its span is so vast, though, that it devotes relatively little coverage to any one event.
But for a real eye-opener on the role of petroleum (and other fuels) in World Wars Sr. & Jr., I'd strongly recommend Daniel Yergin's The Prize.
And I say that despite strongly disagreeing with much of Yergin's largely favourable view of both oil and the oil industry. Even given that, the history he tells is absolutely phenomenal.
For WWI, there's the need for energy, Britain's recent conversion of its navy from coal (of which it had abundant domestic supplies) to oil (for which at the time it thought it had none --- North Sea oil was another 50 years in the future). The US had made a similar conversion, though it was rich in both coal and oil. The US Navy's strategic petroleum reserve played a key role in the highly-corrupt Harding administration (Teapot Dome Scandal).
And WWI was really the war in which the last vestiges of the nonmechanised military were converted to mechanised (and petroleum-fuelled). Navies, as noted, including submarines (finally coming into their own, and nuclear power another 40 years off), aircraft (a new development), tanks (ditto), lorries replacing horse-drawn wagons and carts, and if you stretch a bit, new explosives and propellants based on TNT and ammonia rather than gunpowerd (sulfur, saltpetre, and charcoal). Not to mention vastly enhanced industrial capacity.
WWII saw the further development of virtually all of these, as well as far more reliance on telecommunications (radio, telephone, telegraph, encrypted communications to varying degrees of "encrypted"). And the US's own petroleum extraction capacity fuelled the war on two fronts. Following D-Day, a critical link was a 9" pipeline across the English Channel through which Allied fuel was delivered, Operation PLUTO. And devastating German submarine raids on US coastal shipping traffic, including oil delivered from New Orleans to New Jersey, resulted in the US government financing development of inland pipelines from Texas to New Jersey, the Big Inch and Little Inch pipelines, still in use today AFAIU.
There was also Germany's thirst for petroleum, seeking it in Romania, North Africa, and Baku (now Azerbaijan, then the USSR). Japan had virtually no energy resources at all, which was why it had previously invaded Manchuria (Manchuko, as Japan called it), and had designs on Indonesia and SE Asia, both with significant oil reserves. The US submarine fleet torpedoed that last ambition, figuratively and literally. Much of the Japanese war was a desperate race to find, and make maximum use of, very limited liquid fuel resources, including boiling pine tree stumps and roots for turpentine-based fuel.

The Prize covers more, though what it has to say about oil and the world wars is on its own mind-blowing. The rest of the book is ... similarly boggling. I'm struck by how fast developments that strongly resemble present-day technologies appeared in the decade after oil was discovered in Titusville, PA (1859). The degree to which oil transforms virtually everything is staggering.
