#Mainers organize to push #ICEOut of #ScarboroughME, file petition to congressional delegation
The Scarborough Democratic Town Committee leadership submitted a petition requesting a meeting to review and remove the ICE facility
Salomé Cloteaux
Sept 15, 2026SCARBOROUGH — "About 40 people — half of them wearing white T-shirts with “ICE” crossed out inside a red circle — gathered Monday night to oppose the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, and especially the ICE detention facility, in Scarborough.
In the weeks following the killing of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Biddeford, many southern Maine residents expressed grief and anger, unsure what power they had against the federal agency. Two months later, those gathered in Scarborough were turning their feelings into action at an “ICE Out” community organizing meeting.
The actions of ICE agents in Scarborough are incompatible with the values, laws and rights of their community, they said.
“Tonight isn’t just another protest or meeting,” organizer Jennifer Jortberg said at Scarborough Town Hall to begin the meeting. “Tonight, we organize.”
Ahead of the meeting, the Scarborough Democratic Town Committee leadership submitted a petition to Maine’s congressional delegation requesting a meeting to review and remove the ICE facility, citing residents’ heightened concerns since Guerrero’s killing and Scarborough resident Jonas Manywa’s detention at the facility."Archived version:

Ok, Ken Jennings. I rejected you after you crossed picket lines on a strike, but I'm with you on this. I guess when it comes to #trans rights and the human rights of #immigrants. you are an ethical scab with personal integrity.
As with many issues, some people need to know the victims personally to empathize with them. Weird a know-it-all didn't know any pro-union teachers in #Utah where they are some of the few remaining strong unions in this #RightToWork state, but whatever.
Good on you for standing up for the humanity of trans people and immigrants.
