Hearing rumors from Kaua'i scuba friends that an early assessment of the reef at the popular Koloa Landing shore dive site is looking bleak after Hurricane Lowell, which destroyed homes & roads very close to the site.
This majestic, very old mushroom coral is a landmark for every diver and someone told me it did not survive. It's very close to shore and boulders got pushed up out of the ocean so...
I'm not crying yet but if I ever dive that site again, I'm sure it will look much different and I'll probably add some salt to the ocean. I've seen so many turtles napping in the safety of this coral. I've watched eels dart in and out of the plates looking for lunch. I've marveled as cleaner wrasses set up cleaning stations right there.
I've been diving at this spot 80+ times and each visit, the mushroom coral welcomes me. At the end of a dive, it signals that I'm nearly back to shore & did not get lost.

The day after Hurricane Lowell hit Kaua'i, a fire broke out in the main county office building and service center. The DMV, planning office, property tax office and a whole bunch of other services were affected.
The county IT staff are working to restore services. Thank you to them...some of whom may be living without grid power and inside damaged homes.
'The fire destroyed critical information technology infrastructure that supports County operations islandwide. Systems used to process transactions, access records, and connect County phone lines were housed in the building. That infrastructure has to be restored before counter services can resume. Crews from the Information Technology Division are working on recovery and standing up temporary systems.' - County statement today.
I sure hope it wasn't arson.

Hating on governments is fashionable (often for good reason) but I am so, so, so pleased and impressed with the County of Kaua'i's response to Hurricane Lowell.
The twice-daily updates are full of important and useful information. The county has knocked down pervasive and malicious rumors. They have kept everyone posted on restoration of power and water. They've clearly stated what is and isn't open.
Our mayor, Derek Kawakami, will soon be Hawaii's Lt. Governor and will be in line to run for governor after that if he wants to. He's been fantastic, just as he was throughout the early pandemic.
Community response has been great too. I rode the east side bike path yesterday for the first time since the storm and all 5 miles had already been cleared of downed trees.

They weren't lying. I waited 5 hours just to get through the TSA at Lihue Airport. Some people I've talked to said they waited 7+ hours.
All these people left after the tourism authority advised tourists to leave the island after the power outage.

We were in and out of rain showers all day, and our shoes came out caked in mud, but it was still worth it. -
