They weren't lying. I waited 5 hours just to get through the TSA at Lihue Airport. Some people I've talked to said they waited 7+ hours.
All these people left after the tourism authority advised tourists to leave the island after the power outage.

While we weren't hit the hardest, hurricane lowell still knocked out most of the electrical infrastructure in Lihue.

Power is back in Kapa'a. Almost exactly 48 hours. I'm impressed. I know a lot of places on the island are still out but they're working fast.
I think Kauai Island Utility Co-op may have under-promised and over-delivered.

Our utility: We restored power to 6,000 customers today. We have no estimates for when specific areas will be restored.
The comments section: When will MY house get power???
I wonder...if I met these people, would they seem normal, or would they be insufferable numpties in person too?

Just wanted to note that the National Weather Service/National Hurricane Center forecast for Hurricane Lowell was pretty much spot-on. For my area they projected 3-6" of rain and 60-70mph wind gusts - we got 4" of rain and 64 mph gusts. I'm impressed. The state & county did a good job warning people to prepare for 4-5 days before it hit.

Either we've gone back to beasts of burden on Kaua'i or a water buffalo is some kind of vehicle.
Notice from Dept. of Water:
" Haena-Wainiha - Water buffalo providing potable (drinking) water is dispatched to Hanalei Colony Resort, located at 5-7130 Kuhio Highway"

#Hawaii's #KonaStorm triggers #flooding, 100-mph #winds and summit snow
An emergency declaration was issued as a prolonged #kona storm is bringing dangerous flooding, waterspouts, high winds over 100 mph and 1-2 feet of snow to the summits.
By Emilee Speck, Mar 11, 2026
Excerpt: "Storms are producing intense downpours capable of triggering localized flooding, especially in upslope areas. Heavier rainfall is expected over #Kauai and #Oahu and continuing into the weekend.
" 'This deluge of heavy rain will persist for most of the Hawaiian Islands on Saturday, exacerbating any ongoing localized flooding,' Glenny said.
"As more rain falls, life-threatening flash flooding, mudslides and other debris flows are possible."
