@ai6yr Once, while we were vacationing in #Kauai, a massive rainstorm caused island-wide flooding. It was our departure day. Despite the rain, we set out for the airport from Hanalei. Soon the water was above the bottom of the doors and it began to come in. A house ..,A HOUSE…floated across the road. There was nothing to do except keep moving. We made it to the airport terminal, ahead of the rising flood waters. Grabbed our bags, left the rental car in front of the terminal and rushed to our gate (pre-9/11). We were the first, last and only passengers. The pilot taxied and immediately did a short-field takeoff. As the plane banked, we looked out the window at the flood waters beginning to cover the runway. Last plane out.

Took a visitor here today. Near the Kīpū Ranch (across the river), site of the first scene in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and some of "Out of Africa."
A funny thing about this spot is if you turn around, you can almost see the Costco that's about a mile away.
One family has owned the 3,000 acre property pretty much since private property became a thing here. A certain Mr. Rice bought it from a Hawai'ian royal family member in 1872 and secured a land fortune for his heirs.
Was a working cattle ranch until quite recently. Now it can be toured via ATVs.
There's an ancient Hawai'ian fish pond in the foreground being rehabbed for aquaculture again.

Kind of a niche post, but if any #scuba divers are looking into diving Kaua'i, the famous Tunnels dive is now off-limits to commerical operations. This is a fairly recent change inside Haena State Park; no more permits for any commercial activity. Divers can still dive there but tours and paid guides are not allowed. A local guide just confirmed this to me.
I would NOT recommend swimming or diving into the maze of lava tubes without an experienced guide. It's...a complicated system of interconnected tubes, dammit.

I will say it out loud: My local elections are super annoying and difficult to prepare for. 20+ people running for 7 at-large county council seats. Some of them I definitely DO NOT want on the council and for my votes to count the most I need to pick 7 I do want.
That is a lot of work to understand who all of these folks are and there aren't a ton of resources available (interviews, etc) to do that.
