‘The environmental movement needs many hands’: saving Australia’s biodiversity is getting personal
Powered by individual donations and bequests, the country now has one of the world’s largest networks of privately protected and managed land
by James Norman, Fri 17 Apr 2026
Excerpt: "Over three decades later, #BushHeritage today owns and protects 45 bought or gifted bush reserves around #Australia – covering more than 1.4m hectares of land and providing habitat for over 9,000 native species. Working with #FirstNations communities and farmers, it supports the management of an additional 20.5m hectares beyond what it owns directly.
" 'Some of Australia’s most threatened and fragile #ecosystems and #wildlife sit outside of the national reserve system,' says Rachel Lowry, Bush Heritage Australia’s chief executive officer.
" 'They’re found on private land or pastoral country, and they may have deep cultural and ecological values, but they’re not protected from threats such as #LandClearing, #mining or #InvasiveSpecies.'
"The organisation reports a rise in the number of personal bequests, from 2,500 in 2022 to more than 4,600 bequests last year. Lowry puts the increase down to a personal desire to have a meaningful impact on the worsening global climate and #biodiversity crisis.
"Bush Heritage’s model has inspired other groups around Australia to acquire and conserve lands and forests of significant ecological value. One such example is the #NorthEastTasmania #LandTrust (#NETLT), which secretary Dr Christine Hosking describes as 'a microcosm of Bush Heritage'.
"Formed in 2009, the organisation manages donated land through weed control and regeneration of the native environment.
" 'Currently, we have 10 acres [4 hectares] of endangered eucalyptus forest in #BinalongBay that adjoins the #BayOfFires #Conservation Area, and a smaller patch of coastal habitat for the endangered swift parrot,' she says."

The Esto’k Gna Fight to Protect #SacredLands from #SpaceX Expansion
Oct 14, 2025
Key takeaways:
- Tribal nation challenges #SpaceX expansion: The Esto’k Gna, or #CarrizoComecrudo Tribe of #Texas, oppose SpaceX’s ongoing expansion at Boca Chica, saying the project desecrates sacred lands and harms protected ecosystems.
- #EnvironmentalDamage documented: Tribal leaders and #conservationists report that rocket launches have caused #fires, #debris fallout, and #HabitatLoss in an area home to #EndangeredSpecies.
- Lack of consultation and oversight: The Esto’k Gna say they were never properly consulted by federal or state agencies, despite legal obligations to consider Indigenous rights and cultural heritage in environmental reviews.
- Broader fight for recognition: The Tribe’s concerns highlight ongoing struggles for federal acknowledgment and protection of #IndigenousSovereignty in the face of high-tech industrial expansion.Excerpt: "On the southernmost edge of Texas, where the Rio Grande meets the Gulf, the Esto’k Gna Tribal Nation — also known as the Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe of Texas — still hopes to protect what remains of its ancestral lands from Elon Musk’s expanding SpaceX base.
The tribe says the company’s operations at Boca Chica — rebranded 'Starbase' — have devastated fragile #ecosystems, desecrated #SacredSites, and cut off traditional access to the coastline that forms the heart of their creation story. What SpaceX hails as a gateway to Mars, tribal leaders call a continuation of the centuries-long #erasure of Indigenous peoples in the name of progress. As Tribal Chairman #JuanMancias recently told Decatur Metro, 'They dream of reaching Mars. We’re just trying to stay on Earth.' "

Volunteers Urged to Join Toad Migration Effort
#Volunteers needed to protect #IsleOfWight’s #toad population, as a 2nd #migratory crossing site is being supported by local patrols
Common Toads return yearly to same ancestral breeding ponds, following historic #migration routes that often lead them across roads. With slow movement and poor visibility at night, many are killed by traffic in what #conservationists are calling a growing crisis.

#Louisiana cancels $3 billion #coastal #restoration project funded by #OilSpill settlement
By JACK BROOK
Updated 9:17 PM EDT, July 17, 2025NEW ORLEANS (AP) — "Louisiana on Thursday canceled a $3 billion repair of disappearing Gulf coastline, funded by the 2010 #DeepwaterHorizon oil spill settlement, scrapping what #conservationists called an urgent response to #ClimateChange but Gov. #JeffLandry viewed as a threat to the state’s way of life. [??!!! Like pollution from BP isn't a threat?!!!]
"Despite years of studies and reviews, the project at the center of Louisiana’s coastal protection plans grew increasingly imperiled after Landry, a Republican, took office last year. Its collapse means that the state could lose out on more than $1.5 billion in unspent funds and may even have to repay the $618 million it already used to begin building.
"The Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group, a mix of federal agencies overseeing the settlement funds, said that 'unused project funds will be available for future Deepwater Horizon restoration activities' but would require review and approval.
"The Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion Project aimed to rebuild upward of 20 square miles (32 kilometers) of land over a 50-year period in southeast Louisiana to combat sea level rise and erosion on the Gulf Coast. When construction stalled last year because of lawsuits, trustees warned that the state would have to return the hundreds of millions of dollars it had already spent if the project did not move forward.
"Former Louisiana Rep. #GarretGraves, a Republican who once led the state’s coastal restoration agency, said that killing the project was 'a boneheaded decision' not rooted in science.
" 'It is going to result in one of the largest setbacks for our coast and the protection of our communities in decades,' Graves said. 'I don’t know what chiropractor or palm reader they got advice from on this, but — baffling that someone thought this was a good idea.'
"Project supporters stressed that it would have provided a data-driven, large-scale solution to mitigate the worst effects of an eroding coastline in a state where a football field of land is lost every 100 minutes and more than 2,000 square miles (5,180 square kilometers) of land have vanished over the past century, according to the U.S. Geological Survey."

Bills revive debate over #SearsIsland port plan
Maine Public | By Peter McGuire
Published March 12, 2025"Lawmakers heard more than five hours of testimony Wednesday from both sides of a debate over preserving Sears Island in the Town of #Searsport.
"A pair of bills from state representative Reagan Paul would extend a #ConservationEasement across the island and restore #SandDuneProtections in a 330-acre parcel set aside for development.
"The Winterport Republican said it's time to end decades of controversial port proposals for the island in the town of Searsport. The latest plan is a floating offshore wind port by the Maine Department of Transportation that has so far failed to attract federal funding.
"'And yet #MDOT refuses to face reality, doubling down on failure and proving this is not about offshore wind, it is about pushing #IndustrialDevelopment at any cost,' Paul told members of the legislature's Environment and Natural Resources Committee.
"Local #conservationists support the proposal and said the highest and best use of the island is as a wild area. Any commercial development, including the wind port, can be done at nearby #MackPoint, a fuel and materials terminal."

I'll be at #Esquimalt #GorgeWaterway /Kinsmen park in a few hours to join the invasive green crab monitoring team. It's another trapping/netting day & I'll be documenting some of the project's work.
[ Since 2022, we have participated in the Department of Fisheries and Oceans’ European Green Crab Monitoring Project. European green crabs are a destructive invasive species that removes eelgrass very efficiently, destroying habitat for everything else in the Gorge. Unfortunately, we caught adult European green crabs in the Gorge for the first time in August 2024 through our monitoring program.
We are working with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and Peninsula Streams Society to remove as many as possible before the problem worsens. To prevent the spread of European Green Crabs, make sure to clean, drain, and dry off any watercraft according to BC Invasives. ]

So far, eight females from two #seal colonies have filmed almost 90 hours of footage across more than 500km, helping #scientists to #map 5,000 sq km of #habitat. The #SeaLions have mapped rocky reefs and seagrass meadows along the continental shelf, and shown humans the places that are important to them.
With that information, #conservationists will have much clearer ideas on how to protect the country’s only endemic seal.
Goldsworthy, of the South #Australian #Research and Development Institute #SARDI, has been studying the fast-disappearing #MarineMammal for 25 years. But he says the cameras are a gamechanger.
“Information has been so elusive, because they’re feeding at the bottom of the sea,” he said. “Now we get this amazing, exquisite detail. They’re giving us a window into their world that we haven’t had before.
“Just like humans know our streets, the sea lions know the sea bed in intimate detail for hundreds of kilometres and they build up this knowledge over time. They have a mental map of their environment and they are leading you to places of profound significance for them.”

Bid to save early #rewilding site that hosts rare #nightingales and #TurtleDoves
#Conservationists have launched a £1.5 million appeal to buy #farmland that was left to #nature 37 years ago
by Emily Beament
Tuesday 18 June 2024"A farm left to nature years before 'rewilding' rose to prominence has become a unique and important site for wildlife, say conservationists launching a bid to save it.
"The owner of Strawberry Hill, near Bedford, stopped farming his land 37 years ago, with once-arable fields reverting to #scrubland that is now a haven for a host of #wildlife including threatened nightingales, #cuckoos and turtle doves.
"But the 150-hectare (377-acre) site has no official designations or protections, and following the owner’s death, there were fears the land could be sold and returned to agriculture.
"After gaining a temporary stay of execution for the site, the #WildlifeTrust for Beds, Cambs and Northants (#BCN) has raised enough money to buy half the land.
"Now the conservation charity is launching a £1.5 million appeal to secure the whole site, saving the habitat and its rich wildlife and providing a 'unique' opportunity to have a decades-long head start on rewilding the land for nature."

In #Brazil, #conservationists try to save one of the world’s most #endangered #cats
by Sarah Brown on 13 June 2024
via @mongabay
"- #Muñoa’s #Pampas cat, a small wild feline, is endemic to the Pampas grasslands that sprawl over southern Brazil, #Uruguay and northeastern #Argentina.
"- With fewer than 100 individuals left in the wild, experts call Muñoa’s pampas cat one of the most endangered felines in the world and warn it go extinct within 10 years as its natural habitat is cleared for #cropland.
- #Conservation plans to save the species include switching from #monocultures to extensive ranching that preserves the natural #grasslands, creating a #captivebreeding program, and developing a trinational conservation agreement.
"- Recent #floods in the Brazilian state of #RioGrandeDoSul, where many Muñoa’s Pampas cat sightings have been recorded, have currently halted all local #conservation efforts, putting the future of this feline at risk."#EndangeredSpecies #SouthAmerica #ConservationEfforts #Biodiversity

Another BC organization that I've supported & volunteered with:
#WatershedWatchSalmonSociety is a #ScienceBased #charity working to defend and rebuild B.C.’s #WildSalmon.
Watershed Watch Salmon Society was founded two decades ago by a small group of passionate #conservationists. Led by #ecologist Craig Orr, they noticed that while a lot of work relating to #fisheries and #HabitatRestoration was being done on the ground on local #waterways, no one was pulling together the pieces to confront #policy decisions at the federal and provincial levels.
Craig and his associates launched Watershed Watch Salmon Society to fill that gap, offering #ScientificExpertise to policy makers, and highlighting the large scale issues affecting local waterways, from #FishFarms to #ClimateChange.
Watershed Watch Salmon Society involves many people beyond our paid staff and dedicated board members. We have thousands of supporters and a growing crew of #volunteers who are passionate about wild salmon. Whether you read our emails, sign our petitions, donate, get out in your #community to talk about our work or join us in the field, you are an important part of Watershed Watch.
