A conservative Idaho legislature just voted unanimously to protect wildlife corridors. Why? Because deer-car collisions cost the state $150M/year. When protecting nature saves money, politics stops mattering.🦌 #WildlifeCrossings #EcoEconomy

#GrayWolf appears in Los Angeles county for first time in more than 100 years
Three-year-old black coat female, known as BEY03F, crossed into LA county around 6am on 7 February
Cecilia Nowell
Tue 10 Feb 2026 18.43 EST"A gray wolf wandered into Los Angeles county for the first time in more than a century on Saturday morning.
" 'This is the most southern verified record of a gray wolf in modern times,' Axel Hunnicutt, gray wolf coordinator for the California department of fish and wildlife, said.
"The three-year-old black coat female, known as BEY03F, crossed into LA county around 6am on 7 February. Born in 2023 in Plumas county in the Beyem Seyo pack, she 'traversed nearly the entire range of the Sierra Nevada mountains', probably in search of a mate, said Hunnicutt. Wildlife officials have been able to track her location because BEY03F was fitted with a GPS collar in May 2025 while passing through Tulare county. To date, California fish and wildlife has not received any reports or sightings from the Los Angeles county public.
"On Tuesday, she was traveling further north, 'likely deterred by the Interstate 5', said Hunnicutt. Vehicle strikes are a leading cause of death for wolves.
" 'It’s possible she may continue to travel hundreds of miles in search of a mate or she may come across a male tomorrow.' "

#Oregon #ecologist on state’s efforts to create safe #WildlifeCorridors over busy #roadways
By Malya Fass (OPB)
Jan. 7, 2026 11:38 a.m.Image: "This undated artist's rendering from the Oregon Department of Transportation shows the design of an overpass crossing for wildlife spanning above four lanes of traffic on I-5, looking southwest. ODOT is expected to begin construction on the crossing in 2028 in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, less than two miles north of the California border."
"The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife estimates 14.5 million wild vertebrate animals are killed on Oregon’s roadways each year. Data shows it’s difficult to control driver behavior with things like road signs and traffic regulations. A more effective way to mitigate animal fatalities is by redirecting the animals themselves.
"#WildlifeCrossings — human-made structures that allow animals to safely pass through habitats near roadways — have been a successful tool in preventing animal-motor fatalities. States like #Montana, #Colorado and #California have over 100 wildlife crossings, while Oregon has only six.
"Rachel Wheat is a spatial ecologist who serves as the wildlife connectivity coordinator for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. She joins us to discuss her work and tactics for improving transportation infrastructure for wildlife in Oregon."

What’s North America’s most dangerous wild animal?
Snakes? Sharks?
Try white-tailed deer.Every year, at least 200 drivers are killed in collisions with deer, and the average deer crash costs society more than $8,000 in car repairs, hospital bills, and other fees.
And there are lots of these crashes. Between one and two million large critters—not just deer, but also other big animals like elk, moose, and black bears—are killed by cars every year, accidents that collectively cost America over $8 billion.
Last year the two most crash-prone states were West Virginia and Montana, where rural highways run through forests filled with deer and other wildlife.
And, those Deer X-ING signs don’t help matters, since drivers tend to ignore them. Some biologists even call deer signs “litter on sticks.”#roadkill #WildlifeCrossings

Another article by Ben Goldfarb for #Audubon magazine...some promising projects and funding is growing. I never thought about the impact of road kill on #birds . #wildlifecrossings

Reading articles by Ben Goldfarb, and I know I'll read his new book. #carculture and putting almost all our transportation efforts into roads needs to be cut back in a huge way. #wildlifecrossings help, but,
"Without adequate land protection and restoration, wildlife crossings can become bridges to nowhere." Biographic is new to me, an interesting online magazine from California Academy of Sciences.

Roadkill - extinction by design
"Wildlife Road Awareness (WIRES) has reported a 20 per cent increase in the number of roadkill incidents across NSW in 2023."
"The problem was made worse by increasingly dry conditions in some areas of the state. This was because wildlife may need to cross roads to reach water sources or, when other food sources ran dry, macropods such as kangaroos and wallabies were attracted to the green ditches beside roads for food."https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-09-23/eurobodalla-virtual-fence-trial-reducing-roadkill-incidents/102880624

Impact of Roads and Vehicles on Wildlife Populations
"With over one billion cars on the planet (OICA 2016), the global scale of wildlife roadkill is enormous. Estimates include anywhere between 89-340 million birds killed each year by cars in the US (Loss et al. 2014) and 29 million mammals per year in Europe (Grilo et al. 2020)""Estimates for Australia are limited but published studies have reported such figures as: over nine million kangaroos and wallabies struck on Australian roads each year (Burgin and Brainwood 2008); over 300 koalas killed annually on roads in southeast Queensland (QDES 2022); and over 40,000 frogs run over annually on one road in northern NSW (Goldingay and Taylor 2006)"

That we have to call out the merit of this paper is just the tail end of the problem - It is now well evidenced that wildlife crossing structures paired with exclusion fencing reduce wildlife vehicles collisions while facilitating wildlife connectivity across roadways. Managing animal mortality and subpopulation connectivity is crucial to successful species and landscape stewardship. https://peerj.com/articles/14371/ #Highways #Wildlifecrossings #animalmortaility #AnimalWelfare #AnimalRights
