  1. Rocky Oaks Park, Santa Monica Mountains, California [Prints and Products Available]

A striking black and white study of a majestic coastal live oak at Rocky Oaks Park in the Santa Monica Mountains, California. This high-contrast landscape captures the rugged beauty of the Malibu hills, where gnarled branches reach across a clear sky, overlooking a winding trail and the chaparral-covered ridges.

  2. Preserving and enhancing open space is one of the most important things I do. Two recent news items on the conservation front:

    1. Friday I joined a standing-room-only crowd at the annual fundraiser for the Conejo Open Space Foundation (COSF), which uses education and advocacy to promote and protect natural spaces. Here, secretary/founding director Elayne Haggan photographs one of the volunteers from a group that offers free removal of snakes without killing them. I'll post a link and also share an informative FB post from the group in comments. COSF also recognized Brian Stark, administrator of the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency, for his years of work protecting our natural environment.

    2. Today, on the city's behalf, I signed a letter of support for the Rim of the Valley initiative that would add nearly 200,000 acres to the Santa Monica National Recreation Area, mostly to our north and east, creating a true ring of green around our entire area. The city has supported this initiative for several years running. I'll post a link with more information in comments.

  3. COSCA’s annual Trails Education Days (April 28 – May 1) provides lessons on open space subjects for all Conejo Valley Unified School District 4th grade students including a trail courtesy skit. We still have some openings for hike leaders and alternates, and definitely need EQUESTRIAN VOLUNTEERS for the skit. Interested? More info and sign-ups at: tinyurl.com/Volunteer4TED

  4. Excellent video from the Youtube channel Practical Engineering about highway wildlife crossings, featuring a local project in the Santa Monica Mountains we've supported for years, the Annenberg Crossing.

  5. Thanks so much to the Conejo Open Space Foundation National Wildlife Federation teams for the tour of the in-progress Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing. What a wonderful way to enhance and protect open space for humans and wildlife alike!

Special thanks to former Sen. Fran Pavley, Beth Pratt, and Lauren Gill, all of whom are playing key roles in making this crossing a reality.

  6. Mayor Al Adam and I met with Rep. Adam Schiff and staff to discuss the Rim of the Valley Corridor Preservation Act, a bill the congressman proposed to protect and enhance the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and surrounding areas.

The City of Thousand Oaks supports this federal legislation and related measures to protect wildlife habitat.

As we build out infrastructure like the Wallis Annenberg crossing in Agoura Hills, it’s important to enhance area wildlife corridors that direct animals away from city streets and back into open space. These measures keep both wildlife and humans safe!

  7. Last week the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency (COSCA) board honored longtime chair Rorie Skei, third from left, and voted to nominate Dorothy Sullivan, next to Skei, as the board’s next citizen representative. This week the City Council unanimously approved Dorothy’s nomination. Both women are giants in local open-space usage and conservation.

Thank you Rorei, and welcome Dorothy!

  8. Big Sycamore Canyon Trail

    April 23rd, 2016

This day, I ended up hiking for 20 miles carrying my heavy Mamiya RZ67. From the Newbury Park all the way to the ocean, then back through the Santa Monica mountains. I wouldn’t recommend this as a hiking camera.
