My letter to the Guardian: The recent glacial collapse and catastrophic floods in Nepal and Tibet are not 'natural disasters.' They reflect accelerating climate disruption that disproportionately affects the countries and people that are least responsible for global emissions. They lay bare climate injustices and highlight that climate disruption is global, and highly unequal. The UK and other high income countries must step up their development commitments and funding for climate adaptation, and loss and damage, to support those living on the frontlines of climate change. Anything less is a failure of responsibility. #ClimateChange #ClimateDIary #Nepal #GlacialFloods #ClimateJustice

Nepal is demanding "climate justice" and $20 million in compensation after floods recently devastated a region of the country, leading to the deaths and disappearances of more than 6,000 people. The catastrophe, which scientists say was caused by the effects of climate change, was triggered when part of a mountain glacier collapsed on August 26 and a torrent of water and mud flooded Nepal's Rasuwa and Nuwakot regions.

Methane Leaks Multiplying Beneath Antarctic Ocean Spark Fears of Climate Doom Loop
Leigh Tait – Earth Sciences NZ A potent greenhouse gas has begun seeping out of the Antarctic seafloor in dozens of places, scientists have discovered. Researchers documented the emergence of these methane seeps in shallow regions of the Ross Sea, a bay off the southern coast of Antarctica. The patches of leaking gas could be caused by global warming, and they could also threaten to accelerate it further, according to a new study published Oct. 1 in the journal Nature […] -
It's here! Finally we're ready to officially announce "Becoming Stewards Where We Already Are".
Four Saturdays in September, online: this is a four-part course on what changes when you stop treating yourself as standing outside the ecosystem you live in.
You do not need land! A good part of this is the argument that your "site" is not your "property", but rather is every place, flow and relationship you can actually reach and affect, which for one person is six acres and for another is a balcony, a verge, a vacant lot, a restaurant's compost bucket, the woods behind the trailer park. The people nearest you are part of it too, and they are the largest part.
Four sessions: how to observe the ground you can reach and what is worth observing rather than merely looking at, how to read what a growing system actually runs on including the inputs that arrive on a truck and are never counted, and how to plan something that feeds you without asking the place to subsidize you indefinitely. Half of every session is discussion, because eight people in eight different situations will teach each other things we could not.
The examples come from the Ranch, as well as our experiences living in a variety of other ecosystems: the forests of Michigan, New York, Oakland, New Orleans, Tampa, Crestline: and learning that the transferable part was never the species list, it was the questions. We will not claim expertise in your climate but we will offer you the questions that build it.
Eight seats, pay what you can, one seat at the top of the scale covers one at the bottom. Three tiers are available at the booking link below, pick the one you can afford OR send me a message if you cannot and I'll see what I can do!
Saturdays 5 / 12 / 19 / 26 September, 15:00 UTC (8:00 Pacific), one hour each. [link]
We'll be hosting this on Jitsi, and the link isn't live yet but will be added to your course registration and sent our via email before the event.
ALL of the materials from the class will be published and available for free once it's done. We still firmly believe that knowledge should always be free. The value in the paid class is the discussion, the access to immediate questions answered, and knowing that you're helping support the Ranch, but you know that you can always email us questions and we're happy to share. Ultimately signing up is a choice and we've tried to make it accessible but understand wholly that not everyone can access it, which is why even if you cannot everything will be available regardless :)

It's that time again! We would love to do another Quarterly Q&A if any of our paid subscribers have questions for us to answer in-depth! If you have them, please email them to us at [email protected] by 6/15 at the latest. If we don't receive any questions I will likely send out to our paid subscribers this month what I had planned for next month's paid post, which will remain a secret until such a time as it is meant to be revealed!
Thank you, and we look forward to reading your questions!

One of the critical things we're trying to do is develop sensible animal feed formulations based on what grows *here* really well. Because we understand that there's a caloric issue: our limiting factor is animal feed, because the animal manure is the primary thing helping us to restore our native nitrogen cycles and grow food. Roots in the ground mean little if we can't get those roots going in the first place, and we need all of it for any of this to work.
There are more things that grow here really well that animals can easily convert to calories than us, like saltbrush, bromegrass, and bermudagrass (the latter are both invasive grasses) and many that both animals and humans benefit from like ricegrass (where cellulose-digesting animals can eat the grass and humans can eat the seedheads). Prickly pear cacti are a good source of vitamins, water, and other good stuff but require processing before feeding out, though they have a place in this too in my mind. The wild cottontails and jackrabbits eat young trees, and our rabbits can convert creosote and mesquite prunings to meat, which is crazy.
When we can extend our cultivable area beyond the initial dense gardens, the grasses and wildflowers that already grow here can establish themselves better under shade and start to develop a root mat that can stabilize the soil and make the land less hydrophobic. We hope this will have measurable effects on the groundwater levels over time as layers of root systems help bring the water back down into the earth rather than leaving it to run off and evaporate as it currently does. Establishing wildlands with savannah grasses, trees, cacti, and windbreak to preserve the moisture we can carefully and intensively graze a few small ruminants (NOT goats) to consume what we can't and mimick the herbivores that are supposed to engage in trample-eat-urinate-manure-move cycles to push the roots deeper - at that point we'll be moving into a kind of savannah version of the typical regenerative ag that folks like Savory have been championing, and which does really work once you get things growing season after season.
My guess is for the long term future all animals will be cut-and-carry fed through the summer for the land to rest in the dry season and this means probably planning to only keep breeding stock for this season, and a minimal chicken flock to manage for pests (usually these are worse in the summer than winter, even here).
I want to go into this more when there's more testing behind it and documented success. All I can say is right now we're making huge strides producing food here and moving towards a closed loop system faster than I thought possible. Still, ecological time is slow, so we must weather the next few years in order to prove this all!

I think sometimes we come across as too harsh or cynical, but that's precisely because we know what's possible when we let go of certain pretenses and start doing the work. We know we can do it, collectively. We might not have the power to right every wrong, to save all things, but we can and should keep trying to cultivate more and more wilderness, more and more biodiversity, more and more sanctuary for all beings. And perhaps in the midst of it all we find that this was the very thing we were seeking all along.

This month's newsletter release for paid subscribers is a compilation of the six biggest things we think you need to consider before going off on your homesteading, permacultur-ing, or back-to-the-land-ing dream.
While this might sound corny, we see you. We know that lots of you are disillusioned with the polycrisis and the economic and social institutions we live under and you wish for either sovereignty or an exit from capitalism or just to get out of your day job (or all three). Alternatively, we see those of you who are just trying to figure out how to reduce your own impact while seeking to solve some of the more structural issues, because let's face it: there is a possibility that all we can do is what *we* can do, because we know that the powers-that-be really might not care that we need change.
So we sat down and thought about what mistakes we made, and what mistakes others make, and what it is that people are ultimately looking to do when they try to get into a life like this. The result is useful, we think, and we hope that if you can spare $5 you'll look into it. Any contributions help us with our own sovereignty project, and help us feed others, and help us rewild this section of the Mojave and (we hope) a big enough section to make meaningful microclimate impacts one day.
If you read it, or contribute in any way, or share it, thank you very much. We appreciate you, and you're helping to keep us going.

"What is Earth Month at the Brick Works?
For over 15 years, #EvergreenBrickWorks has been Toronto’s demonstration hub for sustainability: a repurposed historic site that proves what’s possible when we reimagine public space for people and planet. Every April, we open our doors to a whole month of programming in celebration of that.
Earth Month at the Brick Works brings together community organizations, environmental educators, artists, local vendors and Torontonians interested in exploring the things that matter:
How do we live more sustainably? How do we create less waste? How do we reconnect with the natural world right here in the city?"
Upcoming events:
