  1. You don't need a VPN to get around Russia's censorship. Free open-source tools got Instagram, WhatsApp, and indie media working in tests. Telegram was the one holdout, blocked no matter what we tried.

The trick: Russia's filtering equipment only inspects a connection's first few packets, since it can't handle full inspection at scale. Tools like ByeDPI, zapret2, and youtubeUnblock exploit that gap.

  2. I don't even like streaming. Dude, I hate streaming disservices, especially in an age when ownership of digital media is increasingly disappearing. Honestly, I couldn't care less if Paramount blows all its profits on the merger, or if the disc-free PlayStation ceases to be. If this is what the future of film and gaming comes down to, I am happy to just keep my old CDs. techdirt.com/2026/08/27/iowa-a

  3. You wouldn't let your friend:
    - Drink and drive
    - Give strangers their house keys
    - Skip medical checkups

    But you'll watch them trust:
    - Google with their entire browsing history
    - Facebook and Instagram with their personal memories
    - Amazon with shopping habits & household income
    - OpenAI with their private thoughts and personal reflections
    - WhatsApp with who they talk to and when
    - Netflix with their viewing habits & payment info
    - Spotify with their emotional state & daily routines
    - TikTok with algorithmic manipulation of desires
    - Uber with their whereabouts & social connections
    - LinkedIn with salary ranges & negotiation position

Talking about data security is a moral obligation.
Breaking the "that's for nerds" myth starts here.

Friends look out for each other.
    Everywhere. Even online.

  4. A global pattern is emerging beneath the headlines.

Britain is building digital identity and data-sharing infrastructure. America is extending state power into grid software and private cyber operations. Europe is enforcing machine-readable AI rules. Australia is building age-assurance systems. Brazil is testing AI safeguards.

  5. Already building a different kind of internet? 🌱

The APC community has been sharing the tools and alternatives we use to make that possible, from email and collaborative platforms to digital safety and decentralised social media.

We gathered some of them in one place. What would you add? 👀

  6. On August 26, the United States designated Autistici/Inventati a terrorist organization and placed the Italian communications collective on its sanctions list.

Since 2001, A/I has provided movements with volunteer-run email, websites, mailing lists, Noblogs and other tools built to resist censorship, surveillance and corporate control.

On September 25, the temporary U.S. wind-down period ends. Banks, hosts, registrars and technology providers may cut services or withdraw relationships. A/I built its infrastructure to survive servers disappearing. This attack is aimed at making the collective economically and technologically untouchable.

A/I has now responded publicly: “We deny all allegations.” The collective says it “will not back down” and declares: “Antifascism and anticapitalism are not terrorism. Protesting is not terrorism.” Read its complete statement at cavallette.noblogs.org/2026/08/10076.

Read their history. Share their work. Preserve public archives. Document over-compliance. Organize independently. Defend resistant communication.

U.S. supporters should not improvise donations, reroute funds or promise coordinated services without qualified legal advice. Independent reporting, education, protest, criticism and responsible preservation remain essential.

  8. Our level of preparedness on this issue can be described as "let me ask Microsoft about that".

We're getting pretty good at ignoring big complex problems that inevitably harm us repeatedly while we pretend that's just how things have to be now.

I'm sure people aren't getting desperate and reaching for extreme anti-democratic responses. It's fine. Yeah, you should probably just leave the country.

Every website asks the same question: Accept. Reject. Manage preferences. They're annoying, repetitive, and often designed to create artificial consent by pushing you into clicking "Accept All" just to get to the content.

It is time to end the banner madness and fix web tracking once and for all. Sign the petition to kill cookie banners! 🍪🧨

  10. Sony PlayStation no longer wants us to own video games. As I understand, they implied we are only being licensed to the games. Days ago, they emailed users the full Terms of Service or something similar, asserting Sony PlayStation policy. Ok, what's your opinion? Because I very rarely play video games. Plus, I have never owned a console.

  11. Helping your friends, colleagues and family de-BigTechify their lives is like Morpheus fishing individual humans out of #TheMatrix:

Of course the absolute number of people you can free is infinitesimally small when compared to those who stay captured. But if you get the right people, they're enough for a revolution.

What's missing entirely from the rules: the environmental cost of data centres, the underpaid labour (some Kenyan annotators earned <$2/hr training ChatGPT) behind these models, & quietly a 2025 "Digital Omnibus" that's already watering the AI Act down. #AIRegulation #DigitalRights #Democracy
