New paper out! 🦇
We published data from 2015 to serve as a baseline from that time, before white-nose syndrome had spread across the continent. 194 North American bat experts assessed 21 threat categories. Pathogens and microbes ranked as the biggest threat across most regions. Habitat loss related threats also ranked high. Will be interesting to see what may change/stay the same in the future.

Over the years we've seen at most three bats flying around but most of the time we only ever see one or two. Glad to say that I just popped out to the garden for some evening air and all three bats were flying figure eight laps up and down the garden. Great to see they're all still around.

It's really cool seeing the #bats from above! They always approach from below and leave by falling away. I'm assuming this is so they can stall as they approach the feeder, then gain airspeed by falling away when they leave. That's why I decided to film from above, I think it captures their flight dynamics better.

They're back! Got the 240 fps/1080p recording going. I'll do some of this, then go back to 120/4K, then also do some normal video and do the ultra-slo-mo post processing to see what looks best.
Ohhhh! They're hitting it hard now. It looks really cool on my phone's live feed.

These are not tiny! They're quite big for bats. If you look at the #bats hashtag or in "media" from my profile page, you can find the slo-mo video from a week or so ago. It really shows them.

Oh! The first feeder must be empty because I can see the bats on the live feed taking the first tentative sips at the lighted/filmed feeder. They're starting on the side facing away from the light and camera. I may have to go put tape over that side if this continues.
I'd hoped that having the light and camera on starting before dark would make them less skittish about it, but I think having to go out and turn the light back on blew it.
They also have probably learned by now that eventually the light will go away and they can come back and eat (after I go to bed).
