  1. Passengers from hantavirus-hit cruise ship to arrive in Perth tomorrow
    By Cason Ho

Six passengers from a cruise ship at the centre of a deadly hantavirus outbreak are testing negative for the illness and are symptom-free, the federal health minister says, as they prepare to be repatriated to Australia.

  3. COVID quarantine facility finally being used for disease control
    By Jasmine Hughes

Nestled away in Perth's outer fringes, this 500-bed facility was built during the COVID-19 pandemic as a quarantine centre but sat idle for years. Now, a different deadly virus will see it used for its intended purpose.

"Scientists Watched Viruses Attack Bacteria in Space. Things Got Weird

'Microbes continue to evolve under microgravity, and they do so in ways that are not always predictable.

The International Space Station (ISS) is one of the most unique environments where life has ever existed, out in the low orbit of Earth. And research out today finds that bacteriophages—the viruses that prey on bacteria—can behave quite peculiarly in space.

Scientists studied how phages interacted with Escherichia coli bacteria aboard the ISS and compared them to pairs grown on Earth. The space-dwelling phages took longer to infect their hosts, while both the bacteria and viruses developed unusual mutations in response to each other and the microgravity conditions of the ISS, they found. The findings also suggest that phages in space could develop mutations useful to humans back home."

  9. No other #disease we track has no times of the year where there are zero or near-zero test positivity. #Flu has an off season. #RSV and #Noro and cold #viruses do too. #Covid circulates between very high and upper-low levels year round. Why are our #governments happy to treat the first graph just like the second graph?

An article published in the journal "Microbiology Spectrum" reports the results of experiments based on the use of genetically modified #bacteriophage #viruses to combat strains of Escherichia coli #bacteria that developed resistance to various antibiotics. These findings offer a way to neutralize these bacteria and new insights into the interactions between bacteriophages and bacteria.

  11. #AI can now design functional #viruses - not the computer kind, either
Inject this synthetic #phage into #Ecoli and it kills better than the real thing
#Bacteriophages, are viruses that infect bacteria, have been widely studied since their discovery in the early 20th century. The end result of the AI portion of the project was a pool of 302 candidate #genomes, 285 of which were able to generate full genomes. Of those, 16 were found to inhibit growth of E. coli #bacteria.

  12. So yeah. Someone here asked me for advice on something that they suspected was Lyme Disease, but was blown off as "poison ivy" by a physician. After looking at photos of what I recognized as a Lyme circle and asking about specific symptoms, I suggested they consult another physician and get a test. It turns out that Lyme was an issue. When in doubt, don't mess around! Physicians today are encouraged for quantity not quality and might miss symptoms! Advocate for your own health!

#Tick risks vary by region. Here's where diseases have spread and how to stay safe

    June 23, 2025

"There are early signs that it could be a bad year for tick bites. In May, the rate of people seeking emergency care for tick bites was the highest it's been since 2019, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"If you get a tick bite, you're not alone: They happen in every U.S. state, and some 31 million people get tick bites each year.

"Not every tick bite yields disease, since not every tick carries pathogens or bites long enough to transmit them. Still, most reported cases of vector-borne disease (including mosquitoes) come from ticks, which can carry pathogens with terrible consequences.

"Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease in the U.S., estimated to affect more than 470,000 people each year.

" 'But ticks can actually expose people in the U.S. to more than a dozen different disease-causing agents,' including #toxins, #allergens, #bacteria, #parasites and #viruses, says Alison Hinckley, an epidemiologist at the CDC's Division of Vector-Borne Diseases. 'The illnesses can range from mild to life-threatening,' Hinckley adds.

"Here are facts to know about these biting critters and tips to stay safe.

"Ticks are slow threats, so prompt action cuts your risk

"With ticks — unlike mosquitoes with their one-and-done sting — there are generally multiple opportunities to reduce your risks. That's because most kinds of ticks need to crawl onto your body, latch into the skin and, in many cases, feed for a while — from several hours to several days — before they get you sick."

  13. The text at the end of the post is copied rather than shared, at previous poster's request, and lightly edited. Feel free to share my post, though, with commentary intact.

You know this was always their endgame. The bullshit answers #RFK Jr. and his fellow loons gave Congress were even more transparent lies than all the other confirmation hearing testimony. Everyone who voted to confirm them shares the blame, but Bill #Cassidy has earned a special place in hell.

#Bondi, #Hegseth, #Noem, and all the rest of the cabinet are all assholes, and profoundly dangerous. Justice and Homeland Security are slaying their thousands, and Defense is gearing up to slay its tens of thousands. Health and Human Services is chuckling at them and saying "amateurs."

I'm skeptical that any amount of lobbying #HHS directly, or any of its sub-departments such as #FDA, #NIH, and #CDC, will have much effect. But maybe, just maybe, calling your #Senators and #Representatives will have an effect.

Let's face it, members of #Congress will suffer a lot less from idiocy like #tariffs than the rest of us, and they're (probably) safe from roundup and #deportation. #Viruses don't care about such distinctions. Mighty and humble alike can choke to death on their own liquefying lung tissue.

#Antivaxers are not "skeptics." They're not interested in evidence. They can't be bargained with, they can't be reasoned with, and they absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead.

Marty Makary and Tracy Hoeg at the FDA are currently trying to set a policy that would effectively eliminate all covid vaccines. They want to require a full clinical trial every year for companies to update the covid vaccine to match the current strain, which they know is not possible.

Please contact the FDA and demand continuing access to yearly updated covid vaccines and ask for the Novavax 2025 covid vaccine to be approved.
