Approved for destruction - Australia a global deforestation hotspot
"More than 57,000 hectares of threatened species habitat was approved for destruction by the Australian government in 2025 – the most in 15 years, according to analysis by the Australian Conservation Foundation."
“A lot of people don’t know that Australia is a global deforestation hotspot … every year, we lose more forest than the loss from the entire palm oil industry in Indonesia...Of the threatened species land clearing, 98% occurred in Western Australia, Queensland and New South Wales."

Animal friendly infrastructure - Road ecology
"Some 40 million miles of roadways encircle the earth, yet we tend to regard them only as infrastructure for human convenience. While roads are so ubiquitous they’re practically invisible to us, wild animals experience them as entirely alien forces of death and disruption. , the harms of highways extend far beyond roadkill. "

Australia has one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world
It also has the highest loss of mammal species anywhere in the world"Almost three-quarters of Australian households own a pet...In the 12 months to March, owners spent an estimated $21.3bn on their pets, with food representing almost half of that spend."

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2025/sep/18/most-popular-dog-breeds-names-animal-medicines-australia-2025-surveyWhat’s in the 2025-26 federal budget for nature?
"Australia's direct government spending on on-ground biodiversity programs was around $474 million in 2025-26, but this figure is forecast to drop significantly in subsequent years, making it a temporary election-year increase. While this is the specific government investment, experts argue it's far below the necessary amount, with figures like $1.69 billion annually needed to address threatened species recovery and around $2 billion annually needed for ecosystem restoration and management."

Man's best friend - First eradicate the Neanderthals, then biodiversity
Humans and their dogs drove our evolutionary cousins Neanderthals to extinction

Monetising the great koala national park
"The government estimates the park’s value as a tourism destination will generate an extra $163m for the state’s economy over two decades. The native logging division of NSW Forestry Corporation has run at a loss for several years...The Minns government on Sunday revealed the proposed outlines of the park, fulfilling its 2023 election commitment...A moratorium on logging within its boundaries begins on Monday."

The great koala - glider national park - logging an environmentally significant area
"The Minns Labor government promised to create a koala national park before the state election more than two years ago, but has not taken a decision on the boundaries and has allowed logging to continue. Between April and July 2024, the surveys detected greater gliders at 82 sites. The government’s analysis estimated the planned park has between 29,693 and 44,211 gliders, with a mean estimate of 36,483."
“...Logging should cease in all state forest areas identified as containing greater gliders.”

The roaming cats of Bellingen are one of the biggest threats to wildlife
"The average pet cat kills 110 native animals each year, roughly 320 million across Australia, and that doesn’t even include frogs or insects. The species is directly responsible for the third highest number of extinctions in Australia, after humans and chytrid fungus."
Victoria has " effective legislation that’s empowering local government to take action on the issue of roaming pet cats."

Are industrial scale burns incinerating Australian biodiversity?
"The “industrial” scale burns which are designed to “process landscapes as efficiently as possible” are known to frequently kill – in 2022, Victorian authorities accidentally incinerated several koalas when they set a forest alight, and evidence suggests fires set in Tasmania have killed endangered devils."
"A complete “rethink” of fire management practices by state authorities" is needed.

Koalas
"After European colonization in 1788, more species have become extinct in Australia than in any other country on Earth (Australian Government Department of Agriculture Water and the Environment, 2022)."
In 2020, the NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into Koalas found that koalas will become extinct before 2050. Why?
Habitat grab, cars and dogs
"Koalas who had been attacked by a dog, fallen from a tree, and/or been hit by a motor vehicle were more likely to be euthanized or found deceased than released."

'Repair' much of the past two centuries of degradation
Australia’s environment could be fixed and threatened species saved for just 0.3% of GDPThe "Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists estimates $7.3bn a year for 30 years could avoid most extinctions, repair soils and restore rivers."
"Australia’s spectacular and unique landscapes and beloved wildlife were a drawcard for domestic and international tourists alike, bringing billions of dollars into the Australian economy every year ... Many Australians did not realise that “all of this is genuinely under threat”.

Keeping watch over greater gliders in a forest targeted for logging
“No tree hollows – no owls, no gliders, no black cockatoos, no bats. A hollow can take 150 to 200 years to form.”
Bulga state forest, inland from Port Macquarie on the New South Wales mid-north coast is to be logged by the state-owned NSW Forestry Corporation.
"This unburnt forest – with its habitat for threatened species including the koala and glossy-black cockatoo, and critically endangered plants such as the rainforest tree Rhodamnia rubescens – has been a target for logging."
The Henry review "identified that native forest logging was damaging ecosystems and species and called for legislation related to biodiversity to be given primacy over other land management laws, including those that govern logging."
The greater glider population "halved in little more than 20 years, and it was listed under national environmental laws as endangered in 2022."

The degradation of public lands and biodiversity in settler societies:
"Grazing, fracking, logging, mining and permits for other private interests are imperiling wildlife, soil and vegetation already under siege by global warming...We are not safeguarding our public domain. The government agencies overseeing it are failing us. The private interests that want the land for profit have planted their teeth in the government. The national trend is against the preservation of the commons. Huge stretches are effectively privatized, public in name only... It is an infuriating battle when the agencies deemed to guard our public lands are the same ones putting them in jeopardy."

Biodiversity is being annihilated at a terrifying rate
A way of life handed down from generation to generation, from country to country. A modus operandi of replacing the diversity of life with a depleted mono-culture.
Anglo-Saxon countries such as Australia, New Zealand (Aotearoa), and North America still follow this prototypical form from the UK. The UK today is “one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world”
“The UK has sleepwalked into this nature crisis and the fact that we are now one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world simply isn’t being talked about enough. Organisers cited the 2023 State of Nature report on the UK’s biodiversity, which found that 43% of UK bird species were in decline and 97% of wildflower meadows have disappeared since the second world war. They warned we are “entering the sixth mass extinction event”.

Dumping of cats and dogs a danger to native wildlife
"Cats not accepted at RSPCA NSW shelters for another month amid vaccine shortage. The decision has prompted concern that the illegal dumping of unwanted animals could increase. "Conservation groups challenge Labor over ‘lack of urgency’ on environment laws. Australia’s major conservation organisations have taken the Albanese government to task over what they say is a lack of urgency on environmental reform."
"The letter, signed by nine groups from the Places You Love alliance, including WWF Australia, the Australian Conservation Foundation, BirdLife Australia and the Wilderness Society, was sent a few weeks before the government announced it would selectively consult key stakeholders and experts instead of releasing draft legislation for public consultation before the end of the year."
Reforms "include a proposal that would give the environment minister powers to override a proposed decision from a new independent environment protection agency (EPA) and another that would allow developers to pay money into a fund rather than identify direct offsets to compensate for the destruction of habitat caused by their projects."

The online #Sabbat rituals I started during the COVID lockdowns continue to be an important part of my offerings. Last night we gathered on Zoom for #Samhain to honor our beloved dead. During our ritual we paused to reflect on whole species who have disappeared into the ancestral realm due to the #ExtinctionCrisis because our #EcoGrief needs to be acknowledged and shared.
My "Zoom altar" is shared with a 2nd camera.

Logging in the Great Koala National Park without current threatened species surveys?
"Koalas, greater gliders and other threatened species have not been counted since 2017, well before the 2019/2020 Black Summer bushfires and floods – but that has not stopped logging on an industrial scale in Clouds Creek State Forest and other native timber forests within the proposed Great Koala National Park in NSW."
"Forestry Corp’s ‘business as usual’ is not working for the koala or other threatened species, such as the greater glider. Logging procedures must change to include up-to-date wildlife surveys and events such as major floods and bushfires."
“It’s actually shocking that there is currently no requirement to conduct ecological surveys in our native forests prior to the commencement of logging." Greens MP and spokesperson for the Environment Sue Higginson
“The NSW Minister for the Environment and the Minister for Agriculture should immediately require pre-logging ecological surveys to be conducted to ensure that threatened species are being protected from industrial logging."
