I always find it rather depressing to notice how, over time, the average member of the software developer “community” has remained in a sort of perpetual childhood—that childish nerdiness where all ethical judgment is suspended, and the new toy, the latest app, or the newest gadget is worth trying out and using.
The library, the app, the service that “everyone uses” is adopted without asking any questions.
It’s a community in which those sensitive to the socio-technical and environmental impacts of infrastructure have always been in the minority.
The second thing that drives me crazy is the religious adherence to open source as a cure-all, without understanding anything about certain systemic impacts or how many projects have nothing good or intentionally generous behind their choice of license—just extractive and opportunistic practices.#software #dev #opensource #extractivism #colonial #capitalism

Western Australia, hard-rock mining is powered by diesel-run machinery, which creates a lot of localized and atmospheric pollution. In theory it could operate with battery power, but the mining industry is not yet decarbonized. The container ships that transport Australian lithium to China are powered by bunker fuel, a very polluting form of fossil energy, and processed in coal-powered refineries. That’s probably the most polluting, most carbon-intensive part of the lithium sector."

The economy can be reoriented to lower both emissions and costs, moving us away from fossil fuels while also using fewer critical minerals to furnish a green transition.
