  10. From Gold Rush to Green Rush
The environmental consequences of cannabis cultivation

    * "Professor Kaitlin Reed (Yurok/Hupa/Oneida) argues that the state's booming cannabis industry can be situated squarely within other extractive settler colonial enterprises such as gold mining and overfishing."

“The real gold is not gold, after all, but the land itself”

Kaitlin P. Reed, "Settler Cannabis: From Gold Rush to Green Rush in Indigenous Northern California" (U Washington Press, 2023) >>
    read.dukeupress.edu/agricultur

    * Reed "connects California cannabis production to the violence and dispossession of Indigenous land and people."

"Young countercultural back-to-the-land settlers flocked to northwestern California beginning in the 1960s, and by the 1970s, unregulated cannabis production proliferated on Indigenous lands."

  11. Foreign companies are making billions off Australia’s gas. It’s time that changed

"While the gas is extracted from beneath Australian soils, the profits go almost entirely to large multinational companies. Research suggests gas companies have made roughly $A149 billion from exports in just four years. Only a small percentage of this profit has been taxed."

"That’s why some politicians, think tanks and environmental groups are pushing for a 25% tax on gas exports. For decades, we’ve allowed foreign companies to earn billions of dollars from our gas sector, and to be taxed very little." >>

  12. WaterNSW criticised for ‘appalling’ decision after hundreds of turtles left to die in wetlands

"Environmental flows refer to water released by the government from dams and tributaries into rivers and ecosystems to restore their health. The Gingham watercourse is home to three turtle species, the broad-shelled turtle, the Murray River turtle and the eastern long-necked turtle."

"Cutmore said she was “not happy with what’s gone down” and was concerned irrigators were “calling the shots over and over”.

"The court ruling in Gina Rinehart’s mining dispute reveals a lot about the nation’s inherited wealth. And for the past 20 years or more, she has been fighting her own children in a series of court cases that are still continuing."

"Such disputes over massive inheritances are exactly what would be expected in the “patrimonial” society described by economist Thomas Piketty in his book Capital, a big hit a decade ago. This refers to a society where wealth and social position are dominated by inherited capital, not earned income." >>

  14. The United States is destroying itself - Rebecca Solnit

"Although there are far worse things about the utterly gratuitous and literally unjustified war on Iran, the fact that it burns through billions a day is striking, given that huge cuts are being made to environmental protection and national parks, and the forest service is being effectively sabotaged, while public lands are being offered up to fossil fuel companies and mining interests. The forest service headquarters are being moved across the country, which will probably cause many resignations, like the similar move of the Bureau of Land Management in Trump’s first term. More than 50 forest service research stations are being cut, meaning more loss of irreplaceable ongoing research, data, facilities and staff." >>

  33. Toxic smoke pollution maximising harm

The government's Forestry Corporation of NSW is still polluting the Bellingen, Gleniffer and Repton area with toxic smoke. Wet piles and the green timber piles are smouldering. After a cocktail of pesticides was applied, the wet piles with green timber were set alight and are left smouldering for days, maximising the toxic smoke pollution over a wide area.

These negative externalities occur when the consumption or production of a commodity (cellulose) causes a harmful effect to a third party.

It appears that the Forestry Corporation and EPA evade or pass responsibility and the many concerned residents ring 000 and overburden the small Gleniffer Bushfire Brigade now...

  34. King Charles’s official representative in the Northern Territory

"As the controversial pastoralist prepares to take his oath on Friday, Aboriginal leaders have vowed to refuse to host the administrator – King Charles’s official representative in the territory, and the equivalent of a state governor – in remote communities, saying Connolly is “toxic”. "

"The former head of the NT Cattlemen's Association
has been at the centre of recent controversy due to his past social media commentary, which has been deemed offensive by groups including the Northern Land Council and Aboriginal Peak Organisations NT."

"As a cattleman, who also helped set up the NT's fledgling cotton industry, Mr Connolly was never shy about criticising what he saw as impediments to northern development...The tug-of-war between environmental concerns and industry development remains as present in the territory as ever."
