A bit of hopeful environmental news: In Kosciuszko National Park, the reduction of thousands of feral horses has allowed fragile alpine ecosystems to begin recovering. Native plants are returning, wetlands are healing, and wildlife habitats are slowly being restored.
It's a meaningful reminder that with careful management and respect for balance, nature can regenerate. Good news for biodiversity and for future generations.#rewilding #conservation #kosciuszko #naturerecovery #biodiversity #goodnews #ecosystemrestoration #positivenews #wildlife #evasivespecies #introducedspecies

The two brown-grey fallow deer does here look like they’re about ready to drop fawns. It’s that time of the year.
They don’t belong here, as they’re introduced (nearly 200 years ago), but they’re here now, so managing them becomes a priority.

Man's best friend - First eradicate the Neanderthals, then biodiversity
Humans and their dogs drove our evolutionary cousins Neanderthals to extinction
"Early dogs, bred from wolves, played a critical role in the modern human’s takeover of Europe 40,000 years ago when we vanquished the Neanderthal locals. The Neanderthals, who had lived there for more than 200,000 years. However, within a few thousand years of our arrival, they disappeared...Humans and hunting dogs were, and still are, a deadly combination." >>

Many pet owners move to the country just so their dogs can roam in wildlife habitat
"We moved to the country to give our rescued working dogs a better life."
74% of Australians own introduced species as pets.

The roaming cats of Bellingen are one of the biggest threats to wildlife
"The average pet cat kills 110 native animals each year, roughly 320 million across Australia, and that doesn’t even include frogs or insects. The species is directly responsible for the third highest number of extinctions in Australia, after humans and chytrid fungus."
Victoria has " effective legislation that’s empowering local government to take action on the issue of roaming pet cats."

Those lists represent four vectors of change.
Massive #loss of #songbirds and #insects (VERY bad).
Recovery of #raptors from DDT (wonderful - the only birds of prey I saw at the Naze in the seventies were a family of #kestrels).
Arrival of new species under #ClimateChange (natural, but a sign of bad things).
Arrival of #IntroducedSpecies (not good).

This one is really fascinating. Involving a chain of events that includes humans, ants, lions, elephants, buffalo and acacia trees.

And then the koalas just vanished...
Speeding cars, road designs, roaming dogs and disease are the biggest koala killers.
Logging and sprawl should also be added to the list of extinction makers"A database tracking hospital admissions and deaths reveals the devastating impact cars, disease and dogs are having on the South East Queensland koala population"
.
"In the five years between 2009 and 2014, 52% of reported wild koala deaths were caused by car strike, 34% were from a chlamydia-related disease and 14% were because of a dog attack."This equates to 1,431 koala deaths from a car strike, 943 chlamydia-related deaths, and 395 dog attack deaths in just five years."
"Remember that these deaths were just the reported cases, so the real numbers would be significantly higher."

Fourth-instar nymph of a spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula). I'm in PA, the epicenter of their North American invasion, but they have spread to DE, CT, MD, MA, MI, IN, NJ, NY, NC, OH, RI, VA, and WV, with sightings of dead adults, perhaps from shipped products, in CA, CO, FL, NH, TN, UT, and VT. At least they are very easy to spot. #hemiptera #fulgoridae #invasive #insect #entomology #SpottedLanternfly #nature #IntroducedSpecies

Furthermore, Western honey bees quickly lose interest in blueberries when other types of plants are in flower (cue the Distracted Boyfriend meme). Here's a quote from Suzanne Batra: "... honey bees do not prefer blueberry flowers, and they may depart for more favored hosts, within their foraging range." #HoneyBee #ApisMellifera #IntroducedSpecies #NonNative #BeeKeeping #bees #blueberry #vaccinium #pollination #npr #entomology #bees

National Public Radio aired a segment on July 3rd that implied blueberries are completely reliant on Western honey bees. That is false. Blueberries are native to North America and are pollinated quite well, thank you, by native bumble bees and solitary bees. And growers who pack their fields with hives of (non-native) Western honey bees likely contribute to the decline of these indigenous pollinators. #HoneyBee #ApisMellifera #IntroducedSpecies #NonNative #BeeKeeping #bees #blueberry #vaccinium #pollination #npr #entomology #bees
