  1. Cat numbers spark bounty push

"...Feral cats kill 3.2 million mammals and 1.2 million birds across Australia each year and carry infectious diseases that affect humans and livestock."

"Recreational hunting could play a role in reducing cat impacts under the right circumstances."

"I've never seen tourists come to look at feral cats, but I've seen plenty who come … to look at native wildlife." >>

  2. Poisoning native Australian predators in the name of rodent control

"Secondary poisoning is not an accidental or a misuse scenario. It is a highly predictable outcome of allowing the use of poisons in our ecosystems that accumulate in the body."

"Australia will continue using rodenticides that cause the greatest harm, Many native animals will continue to die slow and painful deaths." >>

  3. Halloween trick-or-treating - a drive-through neighbourhood:

Spoiler: Driving and idling (fossil fuel combustion), plastic decoration, sugar 'treats' and traps for native wildlife.

Haunted by the spectre of climate disruption and the prospect of an uninhabitable biosphere they drive to event spaces turning neighbourhoods into drive-through (commercial) amusement parks for Halloween and Christmas.

    * "People drive from miles and miles to participate in destination neighborhood festivities. The same kind of dynamic has long happened with Christmas.Halloween has gone from a primarily walking holiday to a driving holiday."

    * "Research suggests about 30 percent of birds' nests may include human-made materials, posing a risk to nestlings. Halloween in Australia coincides with bird nesting season and birds are often looking for nesting material at this time of year, so there is the potential for these types of decorations to have a bigger impact here than in North America and Europe." >>

    * Australians will spend a record $500 million on Halloween this year despite the so called cost-of-living crisis

  4. It took just 60 years for red foxes to colonise Australia from Victoria to the Pilbara

"European red foxes and domestic cats brought to Australia kill about 300 million native animals in Australia every year and remain the major driver of past and current extinctions."

"The first red foxes, (Vulpes vulpes), to arrive in Australia were deliberately released by European colonialists in 1870 in three Victorian locations – Werribee, Corio (near Geelong) and Ballarat. They were introduced for the “noble” sport of fox hunting."

"Unfortunately, the suppression of dingoes across Australia following European colonisation is at least partly to blame for the explosion in fox numbers because there are not sufficient densities of dingoes control foxes. Foxes flourish in areas modified by humans. We show that their populations are densest around urban centres, and they do well after land is cleared for agriculture."

From June 2024, citizen scientists/naturalists field work day.
This is a juvenile long toed #salamander #LiveSpecimen. They're native to Vancouver Island / PNW regions.
These native salamanders are an #IndicatorSpecies & extremely sensitive to any changes in their #ecological #habitats. We capture some to study their health because they help us to obtain more protection for their habitats - which are at ongoing risks for human caused pollution & degradation.

  8. Well this makes my blood boil 😡

The very point of a National Park is to reduce human impact on the flora & fauna in the area. They are deliberately low-traffic areas! Way to miss the point Mark Latham!
