  1. #WesternTrillium.
This is an older Western trillium, in urban forest. They're usually all white. As they get older(takes many years), you'll see shades of pink & purple petals.
Please never disturb Western trilliums in the wild. They are extremely sensitive native plants & need to be left alone to visually admire. Western trillium takes up to 15 years to flower. Once it has been picked/heavily disturbed, it dies. Please leave them growing 🙏

  2. Mixed clouds over a nearby urban forest. More rain expected today; clearing up by evening.
Tomorrow's forecast is all sunshine. Perfect conditions for our galpals mini golf adventure 😊

  3. #MosstodonMonday
This mossy covered fallen log hosts abundant plants life; as part of a biodiverse forest understory ecosystem. Nature wastes nothing. Fallen logs essentially feeds new ecological life. You can witness, respect & appreciate entire, sustainable, natural life cycles, within biodiverse forests. It's well worth paying close attention to 💚

There's at least 4 different moss species, covering this natural life sustaining log. There's ferns, cleavers, purslane, wall lettuce, sorrel & trailing blackberry, all growing out of it.

  9. Brown #centipede friend by our composting area. These are fab creatures to have around exterior of home/gardens 💚👩‍🌾🙂👍

Slugs, worms, spiders & flies make up the bulk of their diet. Their leg count will top out at 15 pairs when fully grown.😀
They don’t eat plants, but they'll eat things that eat your plants! Centipedes are “Gardener’s Friend.”

  10. I met Harold Joe, a #Cowichan based #Indigenous knowledge keeper/teacher, actor & film producer, in 2015. He had come to Victoria to audition for a lead role in the Telus Optik webseries that I worked on for a few years. We casted him.
He's now co-owner & producer at Orca Cove Media with my old film production executive producer, Leslie Bland.

There's two #IndigenousFilm screenings at #UVIC in March with 2 films from Ocra Cove.

  11. I grew this bountiful #GroundCherry plant from seeds collected from last year's #VolunteerPlant. I dug a volunteer ground cherry plant out from a sidewalk crack, last year & transplanted into a pot. That plant provided loads of #fruits. I saved 2 of the largest fruits for sowing this year's plants - gave several seeds away too.

  12. Silver #cockscomb - very similar to amaranth.
Originally native to #India - it was saved from extinction through #cultivation because of its religious significance. #Indian , #Burmese & #Chinese gardeners usually plant them by temples.

Cockscomb is an #EdiblePlant & a pretty #grain alternative. Often consumed in southern #Nigeria, #Benin , #Congo & #Indonesia. Young stems & flowers are #edible. Seeds are also edible are referred to as #pseudocereals.

  13. I grow #ThaiMint & #VietnameseCoriander out of one of two repurposed bathtubs that I use for #gardening purposes.
Vietnamese coriander isn't a true coriander. It's actually an #edible #knotweed. Never put these into the ground if you don't want it to spread. I grow all of ours in containers. I have 2 large grow bags with lots of them growing. I grow lots of both of these plants because we use them in/with our Asian foods often.

  14. Julia is our midterm executive director & she's been doing a fantastic job.

    Meet Julia:

    Julia McDougall

Julia (she/her) is passionate about environmentalism and community engagement. Raised in Kamloops, British Columbia on Tk'emlups te Secwepemc territory, Julia spent her childhood hiking with dogs, canoeing through local lakes and rivers, and photographing the wildlife around her. With a camera and backpack in hand, Julia has travelled to six of the world's seven continents to learn as much as she can about different cultures and their connections to nature. Julia completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Guelph in Animal Biology and later pursued a Master's degree in Conservation Research at Oxford Brookes University. She has conducted research on mountain gorillas in Uganda and black bears in Canada, which has shown her the importance of community dedication to local conservation issues. The links between positive environmental health and public engagement are clear, and have paved the way to her connection with Lifecycles Project Society. On her days off, you can often find Julia surfing in Tofino, hiking with her pup, or kayaking around the coast of Vancouver Island.

  15. Ella is a super rad person ❤️

    Meet, Ella Swan.

Ella (they/them) is enthusiastic about increasing food security and reducing food waste. Raised to value local food systems, they have been working and volunteering for organizations related to sustainable agriculture and ecosystem health since their early teens. Their educational background is in Gender Studies, Environmental Studies and Restoration of Natural Systems. For Ella, the links between healthy food, healthy people and healthy ecosystems are clear. With practical experience in environmental restoration, farming and volunteer management, they are looking forward to supporting the administrative side of the Fruit Tree Project as well as joining in on fruit picks when opportunities arise. Ella is also passionate about art, and has a textile art practice. This is a way to (literally) weave together arts and environmentalism with their focus on reused materials, sheep to yarn explorations and natural dying. Ella is a settler of Scottish and English descent, and has been an uninvited guest on W̱SÁNEĆ and lək̓ʷəŋən territories for the past 9 years. They were born and raised on the territories of the Ktunaxa and Secwépemc peoples.

  16. Come to meet me & Julia (seen here), during #YYJ #GoByBike week, at #UVic on October 2nd. We're manning a #LifeCyclesFruitTreeProject info booth, free juice sampling station & giving away discount codes for our new orchard blend juice products. We'll be at UVic that day, from 9:30am - 12:45pm. Look for our banner, our logo marked van & me in an emerald green ballgown.

We are a local #nonprofit food security organization. Run almost entirely on volunteers power. Please support our community work!

  17. I'll be with the LifeCycles crew at #CommunitySharing day at #WellandCommunityOrchard today 🍏🍎🍐🍑🍇

Our annual Community Sharing Day is our way to celebrate the urban orchard, as well as distribute extra fruit at the peak of the season! We will have activities including tasting heritage apple varieties, a scavenger hunt, orchard tours, cider pressing, asking a fruit tree expert and of course there will be fruit to take home.

  18. We will be showing all of our ribbon skirts, along with past ribbon skirt workshop participants, at the joint #TruthAndReconciliation special evening event, co-hosted by #SNIWWOC & #KWENCH on September 30th.

    Event Info:

SNIWWOC will be hosting our annual Truth and Reconciliation event at KWENCH bringing #community members together for an evening of #education, #togetherness, and #remembrance for Truth and Reconciliation in #VictoriaBC on September 30th 2024, 5:30-7:30pm PST.

#JoinUs to learn about the sacred #Indigenous practice of #RibbonSkirt making and the significance it holds within the Indigenous community. You will have the unique opportunity to view these beautiful skirts made by BC Indigenous/Indigenous BIPOC individuals, and learn about the importance of continuing these traditions.

You will also have the privilege to #WitnessTestimony from #ResidentialSchoolSurvivors, the ones who did not make it as well as for honoring all #IndigenousCommunities.

Truth and Reconciliation, also known as #OrangeShirtDay, is a reminder of what was done in #Canadian history that impacted the #IndigenousPeople, and continues to impact generations of Indigenous communities. On this day we highlight how the conversation needs to be continued as a step for #healing and #reconciliation.

SNIWWOC would like to take this time and day to #honor the people and their #culture that was lost. You will hear from a variety of #IndigenousSpeakers, #CommunityElders, and be witness to #SacredKnowledge, in the #SafeSpace that we will hold for all that would like to be part of this experience.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone, celebrating and giving a voice for those who could not. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided!

  19. Telling my friend about DOC #surfactant in creek. He was worried at first sight but it's not pollution. It is a #natural occurrence. It's an essential part of a healthy & functioning #forest #ecosystem.

Naturally occurring stream foam can be off-white, light tan, or brown. Formed by dissolved organic matter/dissolved #organic carbon (DOC). DOC results from the breakdown of organic debris, tannins & #watershed soils rich in organic materials.
