#OTD in 1965, a jittery, pill popping & whiskey swiggin' #JohnnyCash went camping in the Los Padres National Forest. Shaking, cold, his nephew said he lit up a campfire outside his truck, one that soon ignited a blaze that torched 500 acres of habitat, took firefighters a week to put out, and left only 4 of the original 53 endangered #CaliforniaCondor in the area.
He was defiant during a deposition: “I don’t give a damn about your yellow #buzzards. Why should I care?”
In the end, the indignant Cash was taken to court by the federal government which was awarded $125,172 in damages, roughly equivalent to about $1 million in today’s dollars. Cash eventually settled the case and paid just $82,001 and til' his death proudly proclaimed he was the only person ever sued by the US government for starting a #forestfire.
Just as Cash recovered from his debauched period, so did the Condors. While just 22 were known to remain alive in the early 1980s when Cash was being flipped the bird by his former record labels, the buzzards have had a conservation driven resurgence and now number more than 500.

The YUROK TRIBE in the Pacific Northwest has reintroduced a pair of California Condors, who have established a nest.
🔭 Biologists with the Northern California Condor Restoration Program (NCCRP) determined that the female condor, known by her Yurok name Ney-gem’ Ne-chween-kah (“She carries our prayers”), likely laid an egg inside a hollow in an old-growth redwood tree.
🧑💼 This rare event did not come easy. The tribe spent nearly two decades conducting studies, evaluating contaminant risks, and building partnerships before releasing the first cohort of four condors in May 2022.

On the heels of good condor news from California, awful news from Utah. in Zion National Park, the condor nicknamed 1K, because he was the 1000th egg hatched in the recovery effort, died of lead poisoning at 4 years old, about 5 yrs short of breeding age.
Wildlife reintroduction is complicated, but for condors, lead is really the main problem, along with the global avian flu pandemic that has killed so many birds over the past two years.

My sadness about the loss of cyanoptera #macaw chicks has been mitigated by the #CaliforniaCondor that I saw less than a mile from my house this afternoon. The wildlife sighting was a reminder that as a conservationist I should always hold on to hope and keep working.
