How will generative AI firms seek to optimise their models to increase user engagement?
How will generative AI firms seek to optimise their models to increase user engagement? The problem with social media was never the communication itself but rather the algorithmic optimisation that distorted that communication by prioritising certain forms of content over others. There’s increasing evidence that LLM personas are being driven by a comparable optimisation strategy, even if the behavioural science driving the process is still relatively underdeveloped. The ‘sycophancy’ of the new GPT 4o (and the subsequent backlash) is a sign of things to come.
If the personality of models are designed in order to keep users talking to them for longer, LLMs could get seriously dangerous at a social psychological level. Anthropic’s Claude is rather different because it’s currently trained in a virtue ethics framework which goes some way to explaining why it behaves so differently to other models. But whether they could sustain that approach under commercial pressure remains to be seen.
The problem ultimately arises from the innovation ecosystem which demands certain modes of commercialisation, rather than being an intrinsic outgrowth of the technology itself. This has been my intuition for a long time (inc about social media) but it’s only with Catherine Bracy’s superb book that I’m starting to be able to articulate the implications of venture capital at a more conceptual level.

If the personality of models are designed in order to keep users talking to them for longer, LLMs could get seriously dangerous at a social psychological level. Anthropic’s Claude is rather different because it’s currently trained in a virtue ethics framework which goes some way to explaining why it behaves so differently to other models. But whether they could sustain that approach under commercial pressure remains to be seen.
The problem ultimately arises from the innovation ecosystem which demands certain modes of commercialisation, rather than being an intrinsic outgrowth of the technology itself. This has been my intuition for a long time (inc about social media) but it’s only with Catherine Bracy’s superb book that I’m starting to be able to articulate the implications of venture capital at a more conceptual level.

While everything was "pure" before (or geeky or niche or even rarely practices) was always going to do bigger things the more interest there was building for it. So I accept even the Internet itself from modems and BBS Bulletin board system to broadband you people enjoy (I'm almost still on modems lol!) means that commercialisation was inevitable and mostly needed EVEN THOUGH the TONS of money and $tate infrastructure is charging planet and us PLENTY for the broadband-drug streaming to us per month which companies can increase price or adverts into our addiction-filled lives - so adverts are naturally with that... "THE" golden period I think of is the 2000's as we had the best of everything, early broadband or even just before with personally crafted crappy custom HTML sites, ecologic internet (telephone lines and modem) and less addiction (lower baud speeds) etc etc - 1 film a day MAX! Ok maybe a bit more on braodband but picking and choosing was good as naturally any human goes out of control with 'all you can eat' entertainment...⏺️ BACK TO TODAY
Blogs becoming the same kind of advert rolls in between text (or is it text in between advert rolls), now each page is almost the same copy and pasted version or setup perfecting what was the SEO search engine with keywords and other tactics so everything now looks the same for anything non-Wikipedia or other than official pages. Now the system is too good and technical availability being taken advantage of at the cost of quality or even genuine interest (it's all just for money isn't it?)⏺️ SOMEONE ELSE'S COMMENT JUST MENTIONED IN PASSING...

I admit content being drawn out and advert-filled doesn't mean the quality or worth is always less (#NationalGeographic #Wildlife TV stuff I'm thinking of where you can get tea in between or really do something else and come back to it when it gets interesting again). Even if overall the enjoyment process is changed it doesn't make it instantly crap... And since TV back then, the downloading of episodes (TV had unavoidable adverts back then)... which was solved temporarily until streaming came along and it's like being back on TV but via internet with it's tracking engines and more!but anyway....
⏺️ OVERALL yes the feeling is that *feeding* #habits also becomes too much, too pure, too watered down or whatever too much... too much is bad, too much is too much... whoever is supplying it and we have to say no / I need less / I have to moderate it to only *this* part of my life which is hard with 'educational things' especially that turn out to be EVERYTHING!

Ads and the enshittification of AI
I disagree with Ed Zitron on a lot but I think this is spot on, with a real risk that OpenAI will enshittify their consumer-facing product before they even really get it working in a way that has broad appeal:
OpenAI is reportedly looking at ads as a means to narrow the gap between its revenues and losses. As I pointed out in Burst Damage, introducing an advertising revenue stream would require significant upfront investment, both in terms of technology and talent. OpenAI would need a way to target ads, and a team to sell advertising — or, instead, use a third-party ad network that would take a significant bite out of its revenue.
It’s unclear how much OpenAI could charge advertisers, or what percentage of its reported 200 million weekly users have an ad-blocker installed. Or, for that matter, whether ads would provide a perverse incentive for OpenAI to enshittify an already unreliable product.
Facebook and Google — as I’ve previously noted — have made their products manifestly worse in order to increase the amount of time people spend on their sites, and thus, the number of ads they see. In the case of Facebook, it buried your newsfeed under a deluge of AI-generated sludge and “recommended content.” Google, meanwhile, has progressively degraded the quality of its search results in order to increase the volume of queries it received as a means of making sure users saw more ads.
OpenAI could, just as easily, fall into the same temptation. Most people who use ChatGPT are trying to accomplish a specific task — like writing a term paper, or researching a topic, or whatever — and then they leave. And so, the amount of ads they’d conceivably see each will undoubtedly be comparatively low compared to a social network or search engine. Would OpenAI try to get users to stick around longer — to write more prompts — by crippling the performance of its models?
