  3. Renewables T-shirt

We have created this Scientist and Philosopher T-shirt with the message, “renewables the green future”. It is more important than ever that we switch to a fossil free sustainable and circular economy where people are paid fairly for their work. As consumers we have to ask where do the products we buy come from and how were they created. The alternative is runaway climate change.

See how these products are made and are meant to be returned and the materials reused when the they are worn out. This should mean that they are relatively environmentally friendly and lightly loading. You can even send these items back to be made into new things when you have finished with them. (S&P)

  4. Women’s CO2caine fossil fuels addiction T-shirt

A T-shirt from our Scientist and Philosopher range. The first in our CO2caine series.

The human race is addicted to burning fossil fuels to the detriment to life on Earth. Carbon dioxide emissions have been released in large quantities since the start of the industrial revolution. The level now seen in the atmosphere has not been at such a level since before the start of this current series of ice ages around 2.58 million years ago. The implications are that parts of the planet will become uninhabitable and there will be mass extinctions of different forms of life which may include Homo sapiens. (S&P)

Equitable urban green space planning for sustainable cities: a GIS-based analysis of spatial disparities and functional strategies

    Published: 02 July 2025
Sayyed Kifayatullah, Zafeer Saqib, Muhammad Irfan Khan, Muhammad Zaman-ul-Haq, Dmitry E. Kucher, Sajid Ullah & Aqil Tariq

    "Abstract:

#UrbanGreenSpaces (#UGS) are critical for fostering ecological sustainability and social equity in rapidly urbanizing cities like #Islamabad, #Pakistan. This study aimed to comprehensively map and classify Islamabad’s UGS, identify spatial disparities, and evaluate their ecological, recreational, and social functions. The research also proposed sustainable strategies for managing UGS to address urban challenges, including climate adaptation, biodiversity loss, and social inequity. The study developed a detailed spatial map of Islamabad’s UGS using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and high-resolution satellite imagery. Seven typologies were categorized and analyzed, including parks, playgrounds, institutional green spaces, and waterways. Field surveys and random sampling validated the thematic maps, achieving an accuracy rate of 95.68% based on statistical metrics like Kappa coefficients. The study revealed significant disparities in UGS distribution.

"Wealthier zones had larger, well-maintained green spaces, while denser areas lacked accessible and functional UGS. Recreational spaces, institutional greenery, and waterways played a vital role in enhancing biodiversity, urban aesthetics, and community well-being, though many remain underutilized or degraded. Institutional green spaces contributed significantly to urban sustainability, comprising 17.05 km² of the total UGS area. The research highlights UGS as an essential #NatureBasedSolution (#NBS) for addressing urban challenges like #HeatIslands, #stormwater management, and #SocialInequalities. The findings serve as a model for other rapidly urbanizing cities seeking #ecological and social balance.

    [...]

    "Conclusion

[T]his study underscores the pivotal role of UGS in fostering ecological #sustainability, social equity, and urban resilience, particularly in rapidly urbanizing cities like Islamabad. By leveraging GIS and high-resolution satellite imagery, the research provides a detailed analysis of the spatial distribution, typologies, and functional value of #GreenSpaces across the city. The findings reveal striking disparities, where wealthier neighborhoods enjoy better-maintained parks and green belts, while densely populated and economically underprivileged areas often lack accessible and functional green spaces. This imbalance highlights the urgent need for equitable planning and management of urban greenery.

"The research affirms that UGS are more than aesthetic elements; they serve as vital ecological assets by regulating #UrbanMicroclimates, enhancing #biodiversity, managing stormwater, and mitigating the urban heat island effect. Socially, they contribute to community well-being by offering recreation, relaxation, and physical activity spaces. However, the study also identifies significant challenges, such as the uneven distribution, poor maintenance, and underutilization of certain green spaces, which limit their potential to deliver these benefits.

"To address these challenges, the study emphasizes the importance of integrating UGS into #UrbanPlanning policies to ensure #EquitableAccess for all city residents, regardless of socioeconomic status. It also highlights the value of #CommunityInvolvement in the upkeep and management of green spaces, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility among local stakeholders. Sustainable funding mechanisms, such as public-private partnerships, are proposed to ensure UGS’s regular maintenance and future expansion. Moreover, the research advocates for continued use of data-driven decision-making, leveraging GIS tools to monitor and optimize green infrastructure for long-term sustainability. While this study focuses on Zone I, expanding future research to other zones would offer a more comprehensive perspective on UGS distribution and accessibility across the entire city.

"This research presents UGS as Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) to tackle pressing urban challenges like #ClimateChange, flooding, and social inequalities, offering actionable strategies for policymakers and urban planners. While centered on Islamabad, these findings provide a valuable framework that other rapidly urbanizing cities can adapt to strike a balance between development and ecological integrity. The study reminds that sustainable cities must prioritize green spaces to ensure a livable, #equitable, and #resilient urban future."

  11. CO2 climate change T-shirt

An organic cotton T-shirt from our Scientist and Philosopher range.

Our so called progress has pumped so much CO2 into the atmosphere through the burning of fossil fuels, coal, oil, gas and wood that we now have levels not seen for millions of years. In fact levels haven’t been this high since before the current series of ice ages started 2.58 million years ago. CO2 and other gases through a rather complex series of interactions essentially allow short wave energy from the sun in but do not let long wave energy out. This has raised the temperature of the atmosphere and more importantly the seas and oceans. It’s now well past the time that we need to change our ways and reduce our emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases.

  12. Legacy of #Indigenous #stewardship of #camas dates back more than 3,500 years, #OSU study finds

    May 20, 2024

Excerpt: CORVALLIS, Ore. — "An #Oregon State University study found evidence that Indigenous groups in the #PacificNorthwest were intentionally harvesting edible #CamasBulbs at optimal stages of the plant’s maturation as far back as 3,500 years ago.

"The findings contribute to the growing body of research around #TraditionalEcologicalKnowledge and practices, demonstrating the care and specificity with which Indigenous groups have been stewarding and cultivating natural resources for millennia.

"Camas is an #ecological and cultural keystone, meaning it is a species that many other organisms depend on and that features prominently within many cultural practices.

" 'If you think about #salmon as being a charismatic species that people are very familiar with, camas is kind of the plant equivalent,' said Molly Carney, an assistant professor of anthropology in OSU’s College of Liberal Arts and lead author on the study. 'It is one of those species that really holds up greater #ecosystems, a fundamental species which everything is related to.'

"An eye-catching blue flower that grows widely throughout the Pacific Northwest, camas is referred to in Indigenous calendars across the region, with the plant’s growth stages used as a sort of seasonal benchmark. It is often included in traditional #FirstFood ceremonies, in which tribal communities mark the coming of spring with the first #SalmonRun or the first #EdibleRoots after a long winter, Carney said.

"Camas bulbs must be baked for two to three days to render them edible. Once soft, the bulbs taste a bit like sweet potato, Carney said. Traditional baking was done in underground ovens using heated rocks."

  13. Where did all the ice go – tote bag

An organic cotton bag from our Scientist and Philosopher range. There is currently a crisis with the world’s large ice masses. In the Arctic the loss of sea ice could lead to the extinction of polar bears. The melting is all due to humanity’s burning of fossil fuels and the loss of ice can lead to a feedback loop since ice reflects more radiation than does the darker open water.

This is the first Scientist and Philosopher bag in the Freedom of the seas – Protect our oceans series. It’s printed on an organic cotton bag so hopefully lighter environmental loading than many other materials.

The seas and oceans of the world are suffering in so many ways. There’s plastic pollution and acidification. They have absorbed the majority of the heat caused by burning fossil fuels and are filled with various forms of our industrial waste. Our ships make the world beneath the waves incredibly noisy. They also kill creatures such as whales directly. All the waters are over fished subsidised with fossil fuels and some of the catch fed to herbivore farm animals. We humans have and are continuing to completely mess up this part of our small planet.
