  1. Small creeks are essential life feeders in forests. This small creek is a part of our local watershed. It is small, yet mighty with it's life-source; sustaining life for many cedar trees & the plants that grow on forest understory. Creeks need protection as much as big rivers do πŸ’§πŸŒ²πŸ’§

This mossy covered fallen log hosts abundant plants life; as part of a biodiverse forest understory ecosystem. Nature wastes nothing. Fallen logs essentially feeds new ecological life. You can witness, respect & appreciate entire, sustainable, natural life cycles, within biodiverse forests. It's well worth paying close attention to πŸ’š

There's at least 4 different moss species, covering this natural life sustaining log. There's ferns, cleavers, purslane, wall lettuce, sorrel & trailing blackberry, all growing out of it.

A small, relatively unknown, Saanich community park. I discovered it over a decade ago. Jada found it about 2 years ago. She was surprised that I'm very familiar with this park because no one else she knows has been there before. We both love it because we see no other humans while visiting & exploring trails. I was telling her that you can find native sundew plants by lakeside & it's a good place to harvest fiddleheads & look for mushrooms. Told her about the beaver history of this tiny lake/wetlands spot too. The older huge beaver lodge was decimated a few years ago, due to human impact/road construction near their wood harvesting areas. The beavers weren't seen for awhile after that. They returned sometime over past 2 years & built a new beaver lodge - it's currently about 1/3 size of the previous lodge. No photos of it because we didn't go close to lakeside on our hike. Neither of us were into getting super muddy yesterday.

    This park space features:
    - multiple hiking trails from relatively easy to moderate levels
    - diversity of native plants/wildflowers
    - native amphibians are present; many frogs & turtles live there
    - healthy biodiversity of insects & invertebrates
    - birds diversity
    - beavers habitat
    - trees diversity
    - wetlands & marshes
    - fish bearing habitat
    - mix of sunny & shady rest spots; no benches or tables but some larger, open spaces that are good for resting at
    - community stewardship

Super limited parking space. Only room for 2 cars on side of road, by the small park sign. Very easy to miss the sign if you're not paying close attention.

  17. CO2caine fossil fuels addiction T-shirt

A T-shirt from our Scientist and Philosopher range. The second in our CO2caine series.

This T-shirt based on the CO2caine T-shirt displays the source of our problems, the burning of fossil fuels, effectively since the start of the industrial revolution. The human race is addicted to burning fossil fuels to the detriment to life on Earth. The level now seen in the atmosphere has not been at such a level since before the start of this current series of ice ages around 2.58 million years ago. The implications are that parts of the planet will become uninhabitable and there will be mass extinctions of different forms of life which may include Homo sapiens. (S&P)

  19. Renewables tote bag

This is another organic cotton bag from our Scientist and Philosopher range that we have produced on the Teemill platform.

We live in a very degraded and altered environment that is changing our planet and its processes and life support systems. New green technologies are being developed very rapidly but business as usual economics and hugely powerful and wealthy corporations and individuals are still continuing with their fossil fuel agenda. They must be stopped if we want an equitable future for the generations that follow us. This bag is handy because you won’t have to use a plastic one. (S&P)

  20. Renewables T-shirt

We have created this Scientist and Philosopher T-shirt with the message, β€œrenewables the green future”. It is more important than ever that we switch to a fossil free sustainable and circular economy where people are paid fairly for their work. As consumers we have to ask where do the products we buy come from and how were they created. The alternative is runaway climate change.

See how these products are made and are meant to be returned and the materials reused when the they are worn out. This should mean that they are relatively environmentally friendly and lightly loading. You can even send these items back to be made into new things when you have finished with them. (S&P)

Women’s Scientist and Philosopher plain logo Crew Neck jumper. Sadly it seems science is still not taking first place in the decision making processes by governments on our collective future. Not only that but women are not represented anywhere near where they should be in science and the STEM subjects. Only by reading the science and listening to the scientists will we find solutions to a sustainable and equitable future.

  22. I'm getting some resources this week, to put together several free #GarryOakEcosystem #nature #zines to give away in my #LittleFreeLibrary all through this Spring & Summer.
It's part of my ongoing personal efforts to boost #NatureEducation / #NatureTeachings - right from the front of our home; so more people can learn about amazing local #biodiversity in our local #ecosystems πŸ™‚
People who learn more about nature, will learn to love, respect & protect nature life systems πŸ’šβ˜˜οΈ

  24. So, I saw a piece on the local news today about #SeaLevelRise and #PFAS in #BrunswickME. Unfortunately, I'm not finding the link yet, but the gist was, if the sea level rises, all the PFAS pollution in the area will spread. Big time...!

Report warns Maine’s largest PFAS spill could affect water and ecosystems for years

    by Everett Sloane, 3/29/2026

"A scientific analysis of the largest PFAS contamination event in Maine’s history warns that the effects of a massive firefighting foam spill at #BrunswickExecutiveAirport could persist in local #waterways and #ecosystems for years. The release, which sent approximately 1,450 gallons of aqueous film-forming foam concentrate into streams feeding the #AndroscogginRiver, has already triggered fish consumption advisories and a federal enforcement order. Yet the full scope of long-term #ecological damage remains difficult to measure, in part because the spill site sits on land already contaminated by decades of military use."

  25. Heads up! April 4th πŸ‘‰ #VictoriaBC & area folks! Fun #Spring #MigratoryBirds #birding event!

Come out & enjoy a lovely outdoors community connecting with nature event!
I'm going to be there with my Indigenous friend, Jada.

Migratory Magnificence : #Camas Meadow Medley.

Join #SNEMITIYE Dominque James & #SpecialBirdService for a springtime Camas Meadow Medley at #CattlePoint and #UplandsPark.

Early April marks one of the most vibrant seasonal shifts on southern Vancouver Island. Camas meadows begin to wake, early wildflowers emerge, and the sharp metallic buzz of Rufous Hummingbirds returns to the landscape.

These small but fierce migrants travel thousands of kilometres each year, arriving along the coast just as nectar sources begin to bloom. Their presence signals the true beginning of spring.

Together we will explore the Garry oak ecosystem and coastal meadows of Uplands Park, learning how to notice hummingbird behaviour, listen for territorial calls, and observe feeding patterns among early blossoms.

This is not a fast-paced checklist focused walk. It’s an opportunity to slow down and tune into the rhythms of spring migration.

Open to all who agree to abide by the Cormorant's Creed. No birding experience required.

#Endemic #species are always interesting from different perspectives, e.g. from an #evolutionary and #ecological point of view. This also applies to #skinks of the genus
#Madascincus, being with several known species endemic to #Madagascar.
    A. Miralles et al. (2026) described based on #multilocus #phylogenetics and #morphology two #newspecies:
    M. #irery and M.
#minotaurus, with restricted distributions to limited areas of Madagascar only.
