  1. Rush hour in the front yard! Stepped out on the porch today and caught five hummingbirds swarming the feeder setup all at once.

An unexpected guest showed up—a Monarch butterfly sharing the feeder with a hummingbird hovering just overhead. The view from the porch never disappoints! 📸🦋✨

Our tiny feathered friends will be leaving soon -- probably in about two weeks. I think we had two families this year with several babies.

The first photo is from yesterday. To me it looks like a juvenile male with just a tiny spot of ruby red on its throat. The other photo is from two days ago.

  8. The official end to summer for me is when the hummingbirds stop showing up at my feeder. There's essentially two of them who have staked out my garden as "home" each year and I haven't seen them for about a week. This guy/gal is the smaller of the two about the size of my thumb. See ya next year!

  12. I think my home has become #hummingbird central. I have five 8-oz hummingbird feeders and I keep them full all the time in the summer. I'm currently going through 2 quarts of sugar water a week. Birds are buzzing around from first light until last night.

Sadly, I'm also #yellowjacket and #hornet central. I just set up another three wasp traps and all three of them were catching #wasps within 20 minutes. I also just sprayed a few hornet nests. So I'll stay inside for a while.😬

  13. @Mr_Xarii Great photo: The fascinating #hummingbird #hawkmoth (#Macroglossum #stellatarum) is native to the #Palearctic realm and is a #migrating #lepidopteran. Its conspicuous #hummingbirdlike #flight is responsible for some confusion with true hummingbirds. This text by Stefan F. Wirth

  14. His Majesty

Here’s a regal-looking Ruby-Throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris), perched with quiet authority. The iridescent red throat gleams like a royal seal, and the posture—alert, composed, slightly angled—suggests a sovereign surveying his branch-bound domain.
