All major temperate eel species, European (Anguilla anguilla), American (A. rostrata), and Japanese (A. japonica) are now endangered or critically endangered. Overfishing, especially of glass eels for aquaculture, has decimated wild stocks. Dams and hydropower turbines block essential migrations, causing up to 60% mortality in some rivers.
