This video came across my feed just before this post, and I could not help but put them together for y'all.

Now, here's the thing. We can all agree that #farmers are the beneficiaries of all the social programs we've enacted as a country. And we can all agree that they voted against their own interests.

But the important thing, and I keep stressing this over and over, is that there IS GOING TO BE A FOOD CRISIS IN AMERICA. It's going to be bad. I am not a prepper in the traditional sense, but I really don't want to be Cassandra when this all happens. Please believe me when I tell you that ag futures and climate predictions on top of the labor problem means that #crops are not getting picked, and that means #food is going to be scarce, with a government that will not help.

If you can #stockpile things which can help other people, like dried beans, nut butters, rice...it's not a bad idea to get a Quaker pantry going. I really fear what could come.

  19. theguardian.com/environment/20; frontiersin.org/journals/publi (open access). "Using publicly available #data from 2006-2023, the #study... found there to be an estimated 402-433m cases of unintentional acute #pesticide #poisoning of #farmers & #farm #workers every year. Based on a worldwide farming population of 934 million, this means approximately 46% of farmers are being #poisoned every year. The greatest estimated number of #oisonings was in southern #Asia, followed by south-east Asia & east #Africa."

And here’s a nice round up of what farmers can currently get in the way of electric equipment. Most of it’s smallish & the author notes: “The electric future will make its way to Australian farms, but anyone expecting a diesel-free paddock by the end of the decade is probably in for a rude shock. The ag sector still sits well behind passenger cars, trucks and even construction equipment when it comes to electrification – and for good reason.

Australian farms are enormous, the climate is often brutally hot and dry, and operations run long hours, often through the night. It’s not uncommon to put a tractor to work for 12 hours straight, which is why battery technology has struggled to crack the local ag sector. So far, it’s largely limited to electric UTVs [Utility Task Vehicles], with no proper electric tractors available here… yet.”

  21. Nutrition programs work better when they include #Indigenous food knowledge

Researchers found nutrition programs work better when they include Indigenous food knowledge, local languages, and traditional practices.

By Raquel Brandao, July 24, 2026

    Excerpt: "Cameras, cooking and conversation

"Some things worked. #Storytelling, #workshops, and #CookingDemonstrations turned up again and again across the 39 studies, alongside #TalkingCircles, #ShortFilms and #SmartphoneApps.

"The common thread is direction. Each of these methods lets people speak in their own words rather than sit and receive instruction.

"In #NewZealand ( #Aotearoa ), researchers built a mobile health app together with #Māori and #Pasifika partners. The language, the stories, and the pictures all came from the communities the app was meant for.

"Speaking with Earth.com, Rao described a project she led. 'In my own work, and one of the papers reviewed, I have used cameras and #DigitalTools with young women and men in an Indigenous community in #India to document their traditional food knowledges by speaking to the elders, visiting the forests and local markets, talking to women engaged in #foraging and #FoodPreparation.'

"That project is one of the 39 studies in the review. An earlier paper followed ten Santhal young people in eastern India who were trained to make films.

"They made nearly 50 films and screened them in their own villages. Older relatives supplied much of what went into them.

    Elders as teachers

"Who holds the knowledge matters as much as what the knowledge is. #Elders, #healers, #farmers, and #women each carry different parts of it.

"None of it arrives as a curriculum. It moves between generations through cooking, gathering and long conversation, which is exactly what a nutrition leaflet cannot carry.

" 'Reclaiming and recognising #IndigenousKnowledge , values and practices to address the different elements of nutrition and health involves recognising intergenerational and wider social relations, and engaging everyone from the elders, healers, educators and farmers to service providers, policymakers and academics, to together raise issues and find solutions,' said Rao.

"Traditional foods carry knowledge of the local landscape in a way nothing else does. The review treats them as practical resources rather than heritage."

  22. #India - Backyard nutrition gardens- For family nutrition and income

In rainfed agriculture, where farm livelihoods are highly vulnerable to climate vagaries, alternative farm based enterprises go a long way in providing the necessary support for #farmers to remain in farming. Backyard kitchen garden is one such enterprise which meets multiple needs like food, income and nutrition security, besides empowering women.

    September 2025

Excerpt: "A key intervention was to help farm women raise kitchen gardens in their backyard. These kitchen gardens are meant to increase #FoodDiversity in the diets of the participating families and reduce reliance on the market for introduced vegetables. Each interested household was provided with a kitchen garden kit containing around 10-13 types of vegetable seeds. By raising kitchen gardens, women were able to harvest many types of seasonal vegetables.

"During 2023-24, kitchen garden kits with 13 different varieties of vegetables were given to 70 group members. For those who had sown seeds early in the season, owing to excessive rains, the seeds didn’t germinate. But around 40% of the women who took up late sowing, could harvest vegetables from the gardens. Women have done #composting with kitchen waste, garden clippings, and dry leaves to create rich organic #compost. This compost is used to fertilize the garden beds. They also prepared organic liquid fertilizers like #Panchagavya and #Jeevamruta to increase immunity and promote plant growth. To manage pest and diseases, they used #NeemOil spray as #NaturalPesticides. Organic #mulch, such as straw and dried leaves, were applied around plants to retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and improve soil health. Each of the households produced vegetables like #brinjal, #bhendi, #tomato, #gourds, #cucumber, #radish and green #vegetables. On an average each household produced vegetables worth Rs.2500-3500 in a season.

"Again, 2024 has been a year of heavy rainfall for Dharwad district. Untimely rains caused havoc, damaging crops. Farmers had to face crop losses and in such a situation around 25 women farmers raised nutrition qardens in their backyard. Each household produced vegetables worth Rs.3000-4000 in a season. Kitchen gardens served as a boon to these families facing #FoodShortages due to crop loss."
