The Unknown by Riley Sager

When I first saw the title, The Unknown, I thought it was something paranormal. I found out while reading the book, it meant an unknown actress. I like the double meaning as the story unfolds.

Five women disappeared from an Island off Vermont in 1926.

In present day a film crew plans to film the story and to get the actors into character they plan to spend a week on the island living in the same cabins and wearing the same type of clothing as the missing women.

People in the area avoid the island. There are hints of it being haunted. The actors arrive not knowing everything until they arrive with no way to leave.

After a séance some creepy things happen, and the actors begin to disappear one by one.

The story is told by Marin Keane, an unknown actress who has been given her big break by this project.

The women are rivals and don’t seem to get along.

This time though there is a man. The director is on the island with them.

Over the next week, all of them learn more about each other than they probably should. This promised that sometimes people can be scarier than ghosts or demons.

No one is safe and they need to leave but have no way to do so. That is scary but not that scary. Well, I guess there is more than just that. There are some scary things that happen, but I was able to read this book in bed at night and didn’t get goosebumps or feel the need to leave the light on. So, it didn’t pass that test.

I heard once that this author takes other people’s horror stories and rewrites them with his own personal twist. I think as I was trying to figure out what to say in this review, it came to me what story it reminded me of. I won’t spoil it by telling you what I think it is.

I was looking forward to reading this one because I am in the mood for a good ghost story. This story was all over the place, but it wasn’t the experience I’d hoped for.

I am a Sager fan, and I have read a couple of his books before. I hope to eventually read all of them. This one isn’t my favorite, but I am not sorry I read it.

Removing the Young’s Brook Dam—the source of safety and flooding hazards for decades—could restore more than half an acre of flood plain. Mary Ann Goulette, West Rutland’s town manager, says the dam’s 'removal not only reduces risk to homes, businesses, and infrastructure downstream, but also restores a natural river system that will serve us far better in the face of increasingly severe storms.'

"In that spirit, the Flood Safety Act will authorize the state to preclude development within the #RiverCorridor for dams removed from a stream site with a drainage area greater than two square miles helping to 'manage stream and floodplain processes toward a more natural equilibrium state,' says Mike Kline, a member of the Vermont Dam Task Force who spearheaded the act after retiring from a 30-year career in the Vermont Dept. of Environmental Conservation.

"Kline says dams can disrupt natural sediment transport processes in streams, leading to more sediment deposition in some places and greater erosion in others. Removing dams with impoundments allows for the creation of 'floodplains that function to store floodwaters and promote greater equilibrium between erosion and deposition, thereby reducing fluvial erosion during flood events,' he says."

"A tense, day-long standoff outside a South Burlington, Vermont house ended Wednesday night with federal immigration agents removing three people inside and a series of violent clashes between police and hundreds of #activists who tried to impede the apprehension.

"It marked the first major confrontation between protesters and federal immigration authorities in Vermont. Federal law enforcement deployed #TearGas and #flashbangs on a normally busy street in the state’s second largest city to disperse the activists who had surrounded their vehicles. Roughly 60 local and state law enforcement officers were also on scene, though the departments sought to distance themselves from ICE’s conduct.

"The incident began when a man fled Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents who had been surveilling a Dorset Street residence where he was staying.

"According to an ICE affidavit, the subject of the warrant was Deyvi Daniel Corona-Sanchez, a Mexico native who was removed from the United States in 2022, and later illegally reentered the country. In January, Corona-Sanchez was arrested by Middlebury police and charged with drunk driving, the affidavit says.

"Following a multi-vehicle crash, Corona-Sanchez escaped to a house on Dorset Street, authorities said.

"A growing number of protesters and police assembled outside throughout the day as immigration authorities waited for a criminal warrant to enter and arrest him.

"A neighbor, Richard Landsman, said an Ecuadoran family with two children had lived in the house for roughly a year. At one point in the afternoon, people helped a child leave the house; they were driven away.

"When the warrant came through after roughly nine hours, federal agents approached the front door with #TacticalGear and weapons drawn. They were supported by #VermontStatePolice troopers.

"Police wrenched away protesters blocking the front entrance and ICE agents broke down the door. Federal agents removed three people from inside, forcing them into an unmarked car. They attempted to drive off, but protesters linked arms and blocked the street. Confrontations ensued, and the agents eventually managed to drive off by running over a median and exiting via a driveway."

BARRE, Vt. — "Several municipalities in our region have opened cooling centers as temperatures will soar close to 100 degrees this week.

"Hinesburg Emergency Management has opened a cooling center at the CVU High School Library. Guests are welcome to visit the cooling center Monday and Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"The Middlebury Recreation Building on Creek Road is also open from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. both Monday and Tuesday. The town poll will be open as well from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"The city of Burlington has several cooling centers available across the city, as well as a shade tent set up in City Hall Park.

"Barre, meanwhile, is opening the Municipal Pool free of charge to all city residents on Monday. Proof of residency is required.

"In New Hampshire, Lebanon is opening several cooling areas for the general public on Monday and Tuesday. Those include the Lebanon Public Library, the Kilton Library and the Lebanon Airport Terminal Building. The Upper Valley Senior Center will also double as a cooling shelter for senior citizens only.

"In New York, Gov. Kathy Hochul has declared a state of emergency for Clinton and Essex counties, with cooling centers open across the North Country. The public libraries in Chazy Plattsburgh, Au Sable Forks, Wadhams, Chateaugay and Tupper Lake will be turned into cooling centers. "#Maine has been described as a 'climate haven,' [the same for #Vermont] a place expected to remain relatively sheltered from the most extreme and dangerous impacts of global climate change. But the #PineTreeState is far from immune.

"Fossil fuel-driven climate change is intensifying #HeatWaves, #flooding and other #ExtremeWeather events. Waters in the #GulfOfMaine are warming faster than nearly every other swath of ocean on the planet, threatening the future of the state’s signature #lobster industry and other #fisheries.

"Sea levels here are forecast to rise approximately 4 feet by the end of the century, forcing coastal communities, shipyards and military installations to prepare and adapt.

" 'This is a guaranteed threat,' said #AmyEshoo, director of #MaineClimateActionNow. 'It’s not one we can negotiate with. It’s not one that we can put #tariffs on. It’s not one we can go to the table with. We unleashed it. It’s here. We’re feeling its effects. Maine is definitely feeling them.' "

Plans Change… or I Got Them Wrong

I thought we were going to have both kids at the house until Sunday. Why did I think that? I was wrong.

Harry is leaving on Saturday. I’m not sure what time of day. Bellana’s leaving today. Boo. Sometime this morning she’s going to head back to Vermont to go to work this afternoon.

As always, I am sad when one of the kids leaves, but also really happy that they were here at all. They are adults now and both live their own lives and I respect that. I just love them both so much that I selfishly want them around all the time.

Today’s Agenda

So Robert, what’s the plan for this fine December Saturday?

Oh nothing…

First I pick up the antibiotic cream stuff that was prescribed for the mess that is my left eye (ouch). Then I put some clothes in a backpack and maybe some gas in the car and maybe pack up some protein bars and snacks and water bottles. You know, like you do.

Then Jen and I hop into the car and mosey on up to New Hampshire to pick up my mother in law. Then we mosey on over to Vermont to meet up with the kids.

Then, later tonight, it’s nothing special. We just go to see my step daughter, Bellana, perform with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra again. They are doing a string of holiday shows this weekend and tonight’s the night for us. She’s in the chorus. You know, the Vermont Symphony Orchestra Chorus. Nothing special.

(Your humble narrator takes a moment to squeal with pride and glee)

I mean… is your step daughter in the Vermont Symphony Orchestra Chorus? No? Oh. Groovy.
