The Unknown by Riley Sager
When I first saw the title, The Unknown, I thought it was something paranormal. I found out while reading the book, it meant an unknown actress. I like the double meaning as the story unfolds.
Five women disappeared from an Island off Vermont in 1926.
In present day a film crew plans to film the story and to get the actors into character they plan to spend a week on the island living in the same cabins and wearing the same type of clothing as the missing women.
People in the area avoid the island. There are hints of it being haunted. The actors arrive not knowing everything until they arrive with no way to leave.
After a séance some creepy things happen, and the actors begin to disappear one by one.
The story is told by Marin Keane, an unknown actress who has been given her big break by this project.
The women are rivals and don’t seem to get along.
This time though there is a man. The director is on the island with them.
Over the next week, all of them learn more about each other than they probably should. This promised that sometimes people can be scarier than ghosts or demons.
No one is safe and they need to leave but have no way to do so. That is scary but not that scary. Well, I guess there is more than just that. There are some scary things that happen, but I was able to read this book in bed at night and didn’t get goosebumps or feel the need to leave the light on. So, it didn’t pass that test.
I heard once that this author takes other people’s horror stories and rewrites them with his own personal twist. I think as I was trying to figure out what to say in this review, it came to me what story it reminded me of. I won’t spoil it by telling you what I think it is.
I was looking forward to reading this one because I am in the mood for a good ghost story. This story was all over the place, but it wasn’t the experience I’d hoped for.
I am a Sager fan, and I have read a couple of his books before. I hope to eventually read all of them. This one isn’t my favorite, but I am not sorry I read it.

Will #DomesticTerrorism charges be brought against these #AntiICE #protestors?
#ICE enforcement action leads to #protest, violent clashes in #SouthBurlington, #Vermont
by Derek Brouwer, Liam Elder-Connors, Zoe McDonald, March 12, 2026
"A tense, day-long standoff outside a South Burlington, Vermont house ended Wednesday night with federal immigration agents removing three people inside and a series of violent clashes between police and hundreds of #activists who tried to impede the apprehension.
"It marked the first major confrontation between protesters and federal immigration authorities in Vermont. Federal law enforcement deployed #TearGas and #flashbangs on a normally busy street in the state’s second largest city to disperse the activists who had surrounded their vehicles. Roughly 60 local and state law enforcement officers were also on scene, though the departments sought to distance themselves from ICE’s conduct.
"The incident began when a man fled Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents who had been surveilling a Dorset Street residence where he was staying.
"According to an ICE affidavit, the subject of the warrant was Deyvi Daniel Corona-Sanchez, a Mexico native who was removed from the United States in 2022, and later illegally reentered the country. In January, Corona-Sanchez was arrested by Middlebury police and charged with drunk driving, the affidavit says.
"Following a multi-vehicle crash, Corona-Sanchez escaped to a house on Dorset Street, authorities said.
"A growing number of protesters and police assembled outside throughout the day as immigration authorities waited for a criminal warrant to enter and arrest him.
"A neighbor, Richard Landsman, said an Ecuadoran family with two children had lived in the house for roughly a year. At one point in the afternoon, people helped a child leave the house; they were driven away.
"When the warrant came through after roughly nine hours, federal agents approached the front door with #TacticalGear and weapons drawn. They were supported by #VermontStatePolice troopers.
"Police wrenched away protesters blocking the front entrance and ICE agents broke down the door. Federal agents removed three people from inside, forcing them into an unmarked car. They attempted to drive off, but protesters linked arms and blocked the street. Confrontations ensued, and the agents eventually managed to drive off by running over a median and exiting via a driveway."

US #EPA - #SoakUpTheRain Program for #NewEngland: #RainBarrels
Last updated on January 13, 2026
"Rain barrels capture water from a roof and hold it for later use such as on lawns, gardens or indoor plants. Collecting roof runoff in rain barrels reduces the amount of water that flows from your property. It's a great way to conserve water and it's free water for use in your landscape.
Many cities and towns distribute rain barrels to residents through annual sales. Other sources include online retailers, local home and garden supply stores. Cisterns are also used to 'harvest' rain water. With a greater storage capacity they may be located above or below ground.
#RainwaterHarvesting, U.S. EPA Green Infrastructure
Note: Remember that as rain water flows over a roof surface it can pick up pollutants such as bacteria from birds and other animals, and chemicals from roof materials - factors to consider when thinking about using rain barrel water on edible plantings. #NewEngland Lawmakers Weigh #PlugInSolar as Europe’s Model Spreads
Legislation in #Maine, #Vermont, #NewHampshire, #Massachusetts and #RhodeIsland would allow small solar panels to plug directly into home outlets, expanding access to clean energy.
By Ryan Krugman
February 18, 2026"The solar panels that hang from balconies across Europe may soon be coming to New England, helping lower energy costs and ease grid demand.
This could be a breakout year for plug-in solar in the United States, with more than two dozen states considering legislation this session, including Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The small-scale systems are seen as a way to expand access to renewable energy, particularly for renters and apartment dwellers, but first require legislative approval." 'For many of my neighbors, especially renters, solar panels can feel like they’re meant for someone else,' said state Sen. Nicole Grohoski, a Democrat and sponsor of Maine’s plug-in solar bill, LD 1730. 'It’s about giving someone in a third-floor apartment the same chance to lower their electricity bill as a homeowner with a south-facing roof.' "

Here’s where #Vermont shelters are opening to help in #extremeCold
We made a map of shelter locations with information on how to use them.
by Carly Berlin January 22, 2026, 5:05 pm
This story, by Report for America corps member Carly Berlin, was produced through a partnership between #VTDigger and #VermontPublic.
Updated on Jan. 23 at 4:38 p.m.
"With subzero temperatures expected to set in on Friday, communities across Vermont are opening emergency shelters for people experiencing homelessness.
VTDigger/Vermont Public confirmed that nine extreme cold weather shelter locations will be open over the weekend. Most are part of a state-funded network of overflow shelters that activate when temperatures fall into the negatives as an attempt to save lives. You can find information on how to access those shelters below.
Other communities may open more informal shelters, too. Vermont Emergency Management suggests calling your town office to ask about local warming centers or to call 2-1-1 to find a facility near you.
#BenningtonVTBennington’s extreme cold shelter is located at 200 Pleasant St., at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.
It will be operating on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, according to Roxanne Carelli, executive director of operational development and shelter services at Bennington County Coalition for the Homeless.
The shelter will be open from 6:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. each night.
The space has capacity for 35 people.
Adults, families, and unaccompanied minors are allowed, according to Carelli. Sex offenders will not be admitted. Well-behaved pets will be allowed.
#BrattleboroVTBrattleboro’s extreme cold shelter is located at the Beloved Community church at 18 Town Crier Dr.
The shelter typically operates Sunday through Thursday nights throughout the winter. It will activate on Friday and Saturday night this week for the cold snap, according to Rick DeAngelis, a project officer with Vermont Interfaith Action, the organization that oversees the cold weather shelters.
The shelter will be open from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
It has space for 15 people.
Only adults are allowed, and pets must be registered as service animals to be admitted, DeAngelis said.
#BurlingtonVTBurlington’s extreme cold shelter is located at the Miller Center in the city’s New North End neighborhood, at 130 Gosse Court.
The shelter will open for four consecutive nights – Friday night through Monday night – according to a press release from Burlington Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak.
The shelter will open at 5 p.m. and close at 8 a.m. each day. It has a capacity for 100 people.
Only adults will be admitted, and pets are allowed. Transportation will be provided from several locations in the city’s core to the shelter: 95 North Ave. (COTS Daystation), 228 N. Winooski Ave. (Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity’s Community Resource Center) and the Fletcher Free Library.
#MontpelierVTMontpelier’s extreme cold shelter is located inside City Hall at 39 Main St.
The shelter will open tonight (Thursday, 1/22) according to Montpelier Emergency Cold Weather Shelter’s website. Shelter coordinator Andrea Stander said she intends to keep the shelter open Friday and Saturday if volunteer staffing allows.
This shelter uses a higher threshold – 10 degrees – to open. That means Stander is eyeing remaining open throughout the coming week, she said.
The shelter opens at 8 p.m. and closes at 8 a.m.
Pets are not allowed at this shelter. There’s space for 15 people.
#BarreVTBarre’s extreme cold shelter is located at the Barre Congregational Church at 35 Church St.
It will be open Friday night through Tuesday, according to the Montpelier shelter website.
Its hours are 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
#NewportVTNewport’s cold weather shelter is located at 371 Main St.
It will be operating Friday night and Saturday night, according to Casey Winterson, director of economic and community based services for Northeast Kingdom Community Action.
The shelter will be open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
The shelter is open to adults over the age of 18 and has 12 beds. No pets are allowed.
#RandolphVTAn extreme cold weather shelter will operate at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Randolph, located at 15 Summer St.
The shelter will open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights from 5:30 p.m. until 10 a.m., according to a press release from the Vermont Agency of Human Services.
#RutlandVTRutland’s extreme cold shelter is located at the city’s library at 10 Court St.
The shelter will open on Friday and Saturday nights, according to Tom Morgan, project officer with Vermont Interfaith Action.
Its hours are 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.
It has space for 20 people.
#SpringfieldVTSpringfield’s extreme cold weather shelter will be located at 139 Main St. at the Springfield Community Center, according to Tara Chase, operations director at Springfield Supported Housing Program.
It will be open Saturday night and Sunday night.
The hours are 6 p.m. until 7 a.m.
The space has capacity for 10 people.
Adults and children accompanied by adults are welcome, Chase said. Pets are not allowed."

Important Notes about Vermont
Within the State of Vermont are numerous covered bridges located throughout numerous regions throughout the State, a few notable colleges and universities surprisingly secluded for New England, the tallest filing cabinet worldwide, and even a few notable quirks as a State.
