  1. The Unknown by Riley Sager

When I first saw the title, The Unknown, I thought it was something paranormal. I found out while reading the book, it meant an unknown actress. I like the double meaning as the story unfolds.

Five women disappeared from an Island off Vermont in 1926.

In present day a film crew plans to film the story and to get the actors into character they plan to spend a week on the island living in the same cabins and wearing the same type of clothing as the missing women.

People in the area avoid the island. There are hints of it being haunted. The actors arrive not knowing everything until they arrive with no way to leave.

After a séance some creepy things happen, and the actors begin to disappear one by one.

The story is told by Marin Keane, an unknown actress who has been given her big break by this project.

The women are rivals and don’t seem to get along.

This time though there is a man. The director is on the island with them.

Over the next week, all of them learn more about each other than they probably should. This promised that sometimes people can be scarier than ghosts or demons.

No one is safe and they need to leave but have no way to do so. That is scary but not that scary. Well, I guess there is more than just that. There are some scary things that happen, but I was able to read this book in bed at night and didn’t get goosebumps or feel the need to leave the light on. So, it didn’t pass that test.

I heard once that this author takes other people’s horror stories and rewrites them with his own personal twist. I think as I was trying to figure out what to say in this review, it came to me what story it reminded me of. I won’t spoil it by telling you what I think it is.

I was looking forward to reading this one because I am in the mood for a good ghost story. This story was all over the place, but it wasn’t the experience I’d hoped for.

I am a Sager fan, and I have read a couple of his books before. I hope to eventually read all of them. This one isn’t my favorite, but I am not sorry I read it.

  9. Talk about a hunting lodge for rich weirdoes, who apparently thought bringing over Eurasian #FeralHogs was a good idea?!!!

    #Millionaires' Hunt Club
    December 29, 2016

"From my very first days as a reporter in #NewHampshire, I started to hear about a place hidden up in the woods of New Hampshire. A place full of unfamiliar animals from other places, but fenced off from the rest of the state, and kept quiet. I never heard about it directly — it was always through a guy who knew a guy, who had been inside — but the more I heard about the place, the more unbelievable it seemed.

"This massive, private park was called a 'millionaires hunt club' and 'the most exclusive #GamePreserve in the United States' and yet there were many people I know who had lived their entire lives in this state, but had never heard of it. So what is the secret of what’s behind that 26-mile fence cutting through the woods of New Hampshire, and why do some people work so hard to keep it a mystery?

"Officially it’s called the #BlueMountainForestAssociation, but everybody who knows about it calls it #CorbinPark. (Seemingly shortened from Corbin’s Park… we’ll get to the origin of the name.) It’s near the border with #Vermont and it’s huge, though its exact size seems to be something of a mystery. Regardless, at somewhere between 24,000 and 26,000 acres this park is actually bigger than something like 60 percent of New Hampshire towns.

"You can find the chain-link fence that encircles the entirety of the park at the end of any number of long rough dirt roads that lead to locked gates. It feels almost like like stumbling across a military base full of UFOs or some similar secret. The fence itself looks sturdy, if slightly weather-worn, and at regular intervals features small signs reprinted hundreds of times, 'the enclosed park fence and signs are protected by a special law of this state and any person trespassing herein or in any way violating that law will be prosecuted.'

"I got my introduction to the park from a man named Brian Meyette, a retired database administrator, who lives in an off-the-grid home, right next to the fence. 'In the fall it’s cool, because you get elk bugling in here,' he said as we walked down his icy driveway, 'I actually even came down here once because I could hear one and it sounded like he was bugling just inside the fence.'

"Elk, in case you didn’t know, are a Western thing. We don’t have them in New Hampshire. Except on the other side of this fence. And that’s not the only thing that’s over there.

" 'Any time people come up here to work or anything, they always say, ‘oh did you see the pigs?’ said Brian, laughing. When he says pigs, he’s referring to Eurasian #WildBoar, imported from Germany into New Hampshire. 'And no,' Brian continued, 'normally you come down here and it’s just you see a bunch of trees, that’s all you ever see.”

"But while you might not see them, there are elk bugling and Eurasian wild boars hustling around behind those fences.

    "But why?

"The trouble with finding the answer to that question is that no one inside of Corbin's Park wants to talk about it. Corbin’s Park is a member’s only club. If you are a reporter, and identify yourself as such, not only do the employees of the park not want to talk to you, but the members don't want to talk to you, the people they have invited as guests don't want to talk to you, even some regular folks in town don't want to talk to you."

Here is the conversation with Burton Snowboards & Circle Strings!
#Snowboards and #guitars. Same wood. Same craft. Different ride.

At NAMM Media Day 2026, Sean caught up with Adam Buchwald and William Hylton from Circle Strings about their collaboration with Burton.

The concept: matching snowboards and custom guitars built from the same materials—including Burton's actual snowboard core.

William put it simply: "The body of this guitar is actually made out of the core material as well—it's pretty sweet, light, durable wood."

Vermont figured mahogany. Alakazam powder board curves in the design. Snowflake inlays inspired by Snowflake Bentley's historic photography.

Two crafts. One philosophy. Wood, precision, and riding your own line.

  14. #WinterWeatherSafety - #Vermont Emergency Management

    "Winter Storms

Be a good neighbor - Check on elderly or special needs relatives, friends, and neighbors, to make sure they are keeping warm safely and have sufficient food and water.

Carbon monoxide is a deadly, colorless, odorless, poisonous gas. CO poisoning can mimic flu-like symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue. Higher levels of exposure result in disorientation, drowsiness, and unconsciousness. If you experience any symptoms leave the home and contact help.

Ensure all heating vents are clear of snow or other obstructions. Even if you don’t see significant snowfall, blowing snow can block heating vents. Blocked vents can lead to Carbon Monoxide buildup in the home. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors now.

If you use a generator, ensure it is used outside, away from open windows, doors, or air intakes. Exhaust from a generator or heating source can cause a buildup of carbon monoxide in the home, which can be deadly.

Take it easy while shoveling. Overexertion can bring on a heart attack—a major cause of death during the winter.

Be prepared. Have a well-stocked Winter Home Emergency Supply Kit that includes flashlights, portable radio, extra batteries, a first aid kit, bottled water and non-perishable food.

See healthvermont.gov/environment/ for more health safety information.

    Power Outages

If you see a downed power line, leave it alone – always treat power lines as if they are live. A live wire can kill you.

If clearing trees or limbs make CERTAIN they are not in contact with a power line. Trees and branches can conduct electricity and electrocute you on contact.

Report outages to your power company.

Make sure your pipes are insulated. If your pipes freeze, know where the water shut off is and never use a blow torch or other open flame to thaw the pipes out. A hair dryer is one safe way to take care of the problem.

Never use an “improvised” heat source like grill or oven as they can be fire or carbon monoxide hazards.

Keep anything that can burn at least three feet from any heat source.

    Travel

Check weather and road conditions before you leave.

Slow Down: Driving too fast on wintry roads is the leading cause of crashes.

Travel at a safe distance of at least 3 car lengths, leaving plenty of room to stop.

Clear all snow and ice from the vehicle prior to travel.

Be aware of black ice on what appears to be bare pavement.

If your vehicle becomes stuck in deep snow, do not let your engine idle if your exhaust pipe is buried. Idling with a buried exhaust pipe could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Carry a cell phone and use 911 in case of an emergency, but do not become over dependent on a cell phone.

    Flares or reflectors.

    General Preparedness

Ensure your home has a sufficient supply of whatever you use as “fuel” to heat your home.

Have extra items on hand in case you can’t leave your house for a while.
    Flashlight
    Batteries
    Battery powered radio
    Water
    Non-perishable foods
View a complete list from ready.gov

Ask your town where the nearest warming shelter would be should it be needed. Vermont 2-1-1 has a list of shelters when there are shelters open.

    Winter Weather Terms

Freezing rain: Rain that freezes when it hits the ground, creating a coating of ice on roads and walkways

Sleet: Rain that turns to ice pellets before reaching the ground causing roads to freeze and become slippery

Winter Weather Advisory: Cold temperatures, ice and snow are expected

Winter Storm Watch: Severe weather such as heavy snow or ice is possible in the next day or two

Frost/Freeze Warning: Below freezing temperatures are expected

Winter Storm Warning: Severe winter conditions have begun or will begin very soon

Blizzard Warning: Heavy snow and strong winds will produce a blinding snow, near zero visibility, deep drifts and life-threatening wind chill

  17. Thousands in #Midwestern #GOP Districts Attend #Sanders' First Stops on Tour to Fight #Oligarchy

"It's like there's only one person who is actually able to sidestep the demoralization and frustration," said one observer.

    Julia Conley, Feb 22, 2025

"After addressing more than 3,400 #Nebraska residents in Omaha Friday evening, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders on Saturday made his second stop on his National Tour to Fight Oligarchy—telling Iowa City, #Iowa residents that '#Trumpism will not be defeated by politicians inside the #DCBeltway.'

"'For better or worse, that is not going to happen,' said the Vermont Independent senator, whose broadly popular policy proposals have long been dismissed by Democratic leaders as unrealistic and radical while President Donald Trump has increasingly captured the attention of the #WorkingClass Americans who would benefit most from Sanders' ideas.

"'It will only be defeated by millions of Americans in Iowa, in #Vermont, in Nebraska, in every state in this country, who come together in a strong #grassroots movement and say no to oligarchy, no to #authoritarianism, no to #kleptocracy, no to massive cuts to programs that #LowIncome and working Americans desperately need, no to huge #TaxBreaks for the #wealthiest people in this country,' said Sanders.

"The senator announced his tour earlier this month as #ElonMusk, the head of the Trump-created Department of Government Efficiency ( #DOGE) who poured $277 million on the president's campaign, swept through numerous agencies, with DOGE staffers setting up illegal servers, seizing control of data, shutting federal employees out of offices, and working to shut down operations across the government.

"Since Trump took office for his second term just over a month ago, roughly 30,000 federal employees have been fired or laid off—part of Musk's push to cut $2 trillion in federal spending in order to fill the $4.6 trillion hole that Trump's extension of the 2017 tax cuts would blow in the deficit.

"#Republican lawmakers have also pushed to include cuts to #Medicaid, and Trump this week signaled he would back #Medicare cuts after repeatedly insisting he would not slash the popular healthcare program used by more than 65 million Americans, in order to save money while handing out tax cuts to the same #corporations and #ultrawealthy households that benefited from the 2017 tax law.

"'Today in America we are rapidly moving toward an #oligarchic form of society where a handful of #multibillionaires not only have extraordinary wealth, but unprecedented economic, media, and political power,' said Sanders in Iowa City, which like Omaha is represented by a Republican U.S. House member who narrowly won reelection last November and has faced pressure to reject the GOP budget plan. 'Brothers and sisters, that is not the democracy that men and women fought and died to defend.'"

  19. #Vermont becomes 1st state to enact law requiring #OilCompanies pay for damage from #ClimateChange

    By LISA RATHKE
    Updated 3:00 PM EDT, May 31, 2024

"Last July’s flooding from torrential rains inundated Vermont’s capital city of #Montpelier, the nearby city #Barre, some southern Vermont communities and ripped through homes and washed away roads around the rural state. Some saw it as the state’s worst natural disaster since a 1927 flood that killed dozens of people and caused widespread destruction. It took months for businesses — from restaurants to shops — to rebuild, losing out on their summer and even fall seasons. Several have just recently reopened while scores of homeowners were left with flood-ravaged homes heading into the cold season."
