Book Review: White Trash Warlock by David R. Slayton

Summary/Review:

First off, I have to note that I absolutely despise the term “white trash” because no human being is trash.  That being said, the term here is used in what is an otherwise sympathetic portrayal of the protagonist Adam Binder, a gay man who lives in a trailer park in Oklahoma and faces the effects from poverty.  If that wasn’t enough, Adam is also an outsider due to the fact that he is sensitive to the paranormal.   Adam is estranged from his older brother Bobby, and his mother, ever since Bobby institutionalized him as a teenager.

As an adult he lives with his aunt Sue who is also a magic practitioner, and searches for his father who he believes to be a powerful warlock.  The brothers are reunited when Bobby calls on Adam for help when his wife is seemingly possessed by a dark entity. Adam travels to Denver where he discovers the local magicians are dead and the evil spirit in the city is bigger than he imagined.  Adam needs to call upon his skills to fight the supernatural with the help of his brother, some elves, and a police officer named Vic who becomes his romantic interest as well.

This is the first in a series of books.  While I found it’s not quite my thing, I do respect the imagination, world building, characterization, and representation that went into the novel.

I awoke later with Weena pinching me. “No Gooo! Henny Nooo Gooo!” Her tone left no doubt I wasn’t allowed to fade away and vanish. It was actually quite touching, especially when combined with the tears wetting her cheeks. If only I weren’t so tired and achy.

When I examined myself, I saw I was pale, but no longer translucent. That was reassuring; I’d had a real fright.

“Stop,” I said, combining my words with a pinching motion, which I stopped with my other hand. “Henny stay. No leave.” I patted the ground next to me.

“Weena yappy!” She reached up and touched my cheek, running two fingers down my neck and across my throat. She showed me her fingers and asked, “It goood?”

“Yes,” I said, nodding. Then I wondered if it was, given what had happened the night before. Her touch had been very sensual.

I stood tentatively, checking if I was stable. I was still lightheaded, but my headache was fading. In the future, I would be more sparing with conjuring. There was no way to know what could happen if I pushed too far, or if any of the effects were permanent.
