“Coom,” my strange little companion said, pulling me toward the tables. We sat down cross-legged. If Emily had been there, I would have called it “criss-cross applesauce” to mess with her.

There it was again! That name! Who was Emily? She must be important.

The brilliant indigo eyes of a woman surfaced in my mind. She was sipping soup with her face hidden behind ivy on the…

    Then it was gone again.

“Hurburth?” Weena said, poking me in the ribs.

I smiled at her and looked around. We were sitting near the edge of the room. Their clothes were either drabber or brighter than those at the further tables. Some wore wrinkled or stained items. Still others displayed faces painted with berry dye or colored mud. One had a bandaged hand, and a strawberry birthmark marred another’s cheek. From the way the fairies avoided him, you’d have thought he bore the mark of Cain. And then there was Weena, with her fire-scarred face.

    “Misfits and outcasts,” I said.

    Emily… I mean, Weena.

She piled fruit in front of me, and I ate it absentmindedly as I studied my environment.

The little people’s manners were atrocious. When they finished something, they tossed the remains on the floor. They grabbed at the food and threw it at each other.

My companion carefully watched me eat and imitated me. Unlike the others, who laughed and talked like unattended kindergartners, she chewed silently and only spoke when her mouth was empty.

Eventually, she stopped, her brows knit, and touched one of my breasts. “Not Hurburth?”

“No, not Hurburth.” I pointed to myself. “Henrietta.”

    “Henreetaa?”

    “Henny.”

“Henny,” she repeated, getting it correct.

    I nodded.

    “Henny, luke Weena?”

Luke?” I thought. “Luke? Oh, ‘like!’

“Like,” I said, pointing first at myself and then at her. “Henny, like Weena.” I spread my hands wide.

When we finished eating, it was growing dark inside the building.

“Come,” I said and led her to the stairs leading to the platform.

They were in poor shape, with broken treads and gaps. I wondered if it would be safer to face the Morlocks than to climb.

Weena led me into the building through an arch decorated with elaborate carvings of dancing nymphs and satyrs. Like everything else, time had left them battered. The building’s inside was the same: a huge vaulted chamber hung with brown tapestries so faded that any patterns had long since vanished. The floor was constructed of slabs of a metal resembling aluminum. While free of tarnish, countless feet had worn deep channels along the fairy folk’s paths. Raised tables of polished granite ran the length of the room. At only half a meter tall, they were an ideal height for wee people to kneel and eat the fruit heaped upon them.

Silken pillows clustered in the center of the chamber between the tables. I remember from “The Time Machine” that this is where the fairies slept huddled together. I shivered as it #registered that this was also where the Morlocks selected their meals from the helpless fae.

A broad mezzanine ran beneath the stained-glass windows. I would later discover that dilapidated stairs ascended to it.

I pointed to the balcony and spoke to Weena in pidgin English. “Sleep, you, me.” I used sign language to help.

She #laughed, nodded, and said, “Hurburth, foony.”

Indeed, there were lights ahead, blue flickering incandescence like gas flames.

Sumika stopped, watching. When the glow remained stationary, she spoke. “Sorry, I have a hard time #gauging what will offend you. I didn’t mean anything bad when I said you sounded more human. It’s as if your human and crow intellects have blended. You’re still very much a crow, but not so alien.”

She raised her hand, stopping a mealy worm’s width from my head.

“Sorry,” she repeated. “You told me not to touch you without permission. It’s a habit. My mother always patted me when I was upset.”

“You may scratch my head,” I cawed after a moment. I had been thinking about it ever since the mountain shaman petted me, and I’d decided to trust Sumiak. My Glitter Glinda could be insensitive, but except for shutting me in the car that one time, she’d done nothing threatening. “But I’ll bite your hand off if you’re too rough.”

    “Okay.”

Her fingers moved the last bit of the way and ruffled my feathers with a slow, gentle motion.

“Pats, pats,” I crooned. “Pats, pats.”

    “Friends?” she asked softly.

“Sure, friends,” I cawed. It was so unfair to ask that while she was scratching my head.

A minute passed, and then she stopped. “Ready to find out what those lights are?” she asked.

    “Yeah, it’s time.”

Inside the passage hung a feline odor, strong enough to wilt feathers, and paw prints littered the dusty floor. We turned left in the direction most of them led.

“It’s walking on its hind feet,” Sumika said after a few meters and pointed to where the marks of the forepaws ceased, leaving only the rear ones.

“Indeed, that’s because it’s a nekomata. Be glad this passage is wood, not stone,” I replied.

    “Why?”

“Because your ‘cute’ kitty can spit fireballs. I doubt it wants to burn its mistress’s home down.”

    “Oh!”

“It could be worse. We might have run into a gotokuneko. They’re about #treble the strength.”

“Treble? What kind of word is that? Just say three times.”

    “It’s a perfectly good word.”

“Whatever. And what about ‘gotokuneko?’ You’re not making that stuff up, are you?” Mistress asked.

“Moi? Me? Make stuff up? I’m wounded. No, I studied this kind of thing when I was a woman.”

“You know you’re a lot more human-like than when we first met. You almost talk normally, barring words like ‘treble.’”

“Awk, chicka, cawa! Pay attention, there are lights ahead,” I cawed, irratated.

How could Glinda-chan say such a thing? Hmph! Just when I was thinking she had more than one brain cell, she says utter rubbish. But no, she’s nothing more than a three-toed sloth.

More seriously, we rounded the screen in time to see the cat cross the space beyond and disappear behind a triptych. An image painted on the edge panel caught my eye. It depicted a woman summoning a giant skeleton, with a dog-sized frog at her feet. “Takiyasha-hime,” I thought.

The portrait’s most interesting detail was the large, yellow tear-#mole below one of her eyes. That was no coincidence. The mark was an inauspicious one, and I suspected the painter had intended the figure to be recognized as ill-fated before the viewer ever noticed the skeleton.

It was easy to see how a place like this might acquire a sinister reputation, even becoming considered cursed. That would make it an ideal location to hide a secret entrance.

My supposition proved correct. When we slipped around the partition, we found an alcove draped with drab, dusty wall hangings, and concealed behind one of them was an opening to a narrow passageway.

“Hush!” Sumika responded as my laugh echoed in the room.

What a spoilsport!” I griped mentally. “And where was the groan? Didn’t my pun deserve one? Alas, punsters always get pun-ish—Ack, I was #rocking it!

That settled things, and after another round of tea, stew, and barley grain, the shaman led us out into the night fog. She turned and began following a shale-littered trail that climbed to the top of a ridge. On the far side, the murk parted, revealing Himeji Castle below. It stood white against the velvety black sky, glittering. Mist swirled around it, like ghostly arms embracing the fortress. Above, a slender moon and bright stars shone. As we gazed, a comet streaked across the heavens. I would forever remember the beauty of that scene.

“The cowherd seeks his lover,” Seirei-onna said. “#Crossing for one night is more than I shall ever have. Now go. The way is open for you, as it is closed to me.” She gestured to a path leading down to the lights of the castle town below.
