The trip up to the mezzanine was tricky. In many places, the steps trembled under my weight, and in other spots they were missing. My heart was in my mouth when I had to jump over the gaps. Weena struggled even more, so I carried her over the holes. Each time, she buried her face in my chest, her eyes tightly shut.
At each stage, the fairies below laughed and clapped. A few of them tried following us, but turned back at the first obstacle.
In the end, we failed to reach the top. We stopped on a landing instead. Dust blanketed the floor, undisturbed for years. It wasn’t a pleasant place to camp, but at least it was safe.
Slumber evaded me when we lay down. It was almost as if I didn’t need it. I stared into the dark thinking for a long time, with Weena curled up around me. Finally, her warmth and the soft lullaby of her breathing, joined by the rustle of fairies below, lulled me to sleep.
I awoke to a rending scream. Next to me, Weena was trembling. “Mourloks,” she whimpered.
When I peered out into the room, it was too dark to see anything. “I wish I had a lantern,” I thought.
“Eye-yeeee!” I shrieked as a flaming branch appeared in my hand.
This was the second instance that something I wished for appeared. The last time it had happened behind my back. Since I hadn’t witnessed the clothes appear at the sphinx, I’d written it off as a mystery. This time there was no mistake; I had conjured a light from thin air. What was going on?
Feral howls brought me back to the present, and I looked over the railing. Below, I could make out pallid, mushroom-gray creatures holding unresisting fairies. Pandemonium broke out. The wee folk screamed in terror while the Morlocks howled in pain and averted their eyes from the light.
This was possibly the first time I’d ever fought, but I wouldn’t let monsters carry off any of the fae, no matter how pathetic they seemed. I hurled the burning brand among the loathsome creatures and wished for another torch, which I also threw. By the time I summoned the third flaming branch, the Morlocks had fled in a mad #exodus.

For a long time, all I could focus on was the blue sky. A single, wispy cloud floated there. Then, my eyes drifted down to a marble sphinx that loomed over me, wings folded at its sides. I examined, uncomprehending, the weathered stains and moss growing in the creases of its sides. Ferns grew on its paws, along with a solitary scrubby bush. I felt heavy, and my brain was fuzzy. Then the questions occurred to me: “Who am I?” and “Where was I?”
The situation was dimly familiar. Hadn’t I forgotten everything before? Right, there had been that alley with the graffiti of the Eye of Providence, or was it a pink coral pyramid with giant azure dragonflies? I #wished I could remember, but it was all a jumble.
“Think! Think!”
“Rabbits and Templars. I had been fleeing them. Why? A meeting… Cyprus… 1191. That must be why I’m wearing medieval priest’s robes. And something about their calling a meteor to destroy humanity.”
I shuddered at the image of a flaming ball crossing a blue sky. Suddenly, a hot flash caused me to flush, leaving me uncomfortably damp with sweat.
I parted the grass I lay in, looking for Emily, but I was alone in a forest of #august oaks: gnarled trees whose branches brushed the Sphinx’s sides. Tall ferns crowded its bronze base, a path threading through them.
“Emily?” I muttered. Then, turning my head to look for her, I saw an open meadow sloping away from me. In its center lay a large trampled circle where feet had beaten down the grass.
“Fairies?” I asked myself. But that was crazy.
It must have all been a wild, vivid nightmare. Who’d ever heard of fairies or rabbits with rifles? The vision of them in Nazi uniforms and Templar surcoats flared in my mind and then faded.
A dream? It all had to be a confused vision, and Emily must be a figment of my sleeping brain. Why did that make me want to cry?
A tear ran down my cheek.
Welcome to volume two of “Bijou the Time-Traveling Ghost.” We open in the far future, 1,802,701 of the Common Era, and with poor Bijou only vaguely remembering Emily, the Lapin Cabal, the Illuminati, Templars, and the Covenant of Judas.

While waiting for Emily to return, I reviewed what I knew about twelfth-century Christianity, particularly Byzantine and Coptic traditions. It took far less time than I would have preferred.
After exhausting my knowledge of Eastern Orthodox faiths, I sat back and enjoyed the evening breeze #streaming in off the veranda. The faint mix of citrus and blooming flowers was relaxing, and I fell into a reverie.
I could see Emily grimacing as she lost a trick at pinochle or laughing as she beat me at cards. It was the same smile she would flash when I snuck her a tidbit of food in a restaurant. Her smiles were generous. There was nothing shy about them, with a boldness that was unafraid to break into a grin or a grimace. She was a #clever woman, quick with snark or a witty comeback. Except for that hint of jealousy I’d seen, she made a great travel companion.
I was lost in those thoughts until she returned with news.
“The girl’s name is Zoe, and she’s quite taken with you. She even picked some white flowers for you. She swears she saw you walk through the courtyard wall, a miracle. The tutor has tried to dissuade her from this, but she insists. She calls you a saint and says she wants to be a nun. She has a bit of spirit, that one. The father seemed tolerant but not thrilled by this.”
She paused.
“….”
“There was brief talk of you being a demon, and even though they haven’t mentioned the mask, they have noticed and wonder what it signifies.”
“It’s good that you signed yourself and prayed to the icon of the Theotokos. That, along with your ‘saintly’ carriage, has convinced them to accept you as a foreign pilgrim blessed by the saints. The mother compared you to a desert hermit who is too pious to show their face. If you’re careful, you may carry it off.”
“I see,” I said. “Overall, that’s good. Let me adjust this mask to be more humble.” So saying, I roughened the mask, obliterating the smile and other embellishments; leaving only the crown of thorns.
Emily nodded and then suddenly said, “Oh, and they are planning to fete you. Sometimes I wish I had a material body like yours.”
“I’ll get you a doggy bag,” I said as she finished up.
“Charming.”
It was my turn to laugh. Her wrinkled nose was so cute.

Do vampires use social media? Is it a way of finding victims? What would a vampire's profile look like? Do they show up in digital photos? What would they look like?
You should be very careful about meeting up with people who use oil paintings as their profile pictures. I would be particularly concerned if they want to meet up after dark.
Is this addressed at all in modern vampire fiction? I’d imagine it has been, but I haven’t encountered it.
