The roar of flames receded, and the ground stopped quaking, replaced by the gentle touch of a hand stroking my head and the sound of a lullaby. I buried my face deeper into her clothes, which smelled of flowers: daisies.
“Henny okay,” she crooned. “Be goood. All goood. Weena nuusuuk Henny.”
I lay there trembling. I was #benighted by ignorance, and what was seeping through that curtain of amnesia terrified me. Had I really seen a meteor destroy an ancient city and the Hindenburg’s crash, or was I totally losing it? I wanted to believe it was a flashback, but how could I have witnessed either event, let alone both?
I opened my eyes and looked up. Weena was smiling down at me. “Henny ookay?” she asked.
I smiled back weakly. My cheeks flamed. I was #embarrassed; I’d fallen apart at seeing a shooting star, and now someone I considered weak, even doglike, was comforting me.
I sat up. “Henny okay,” I said.
“Soonee coome,” she said, pointing to the statue.
Was I coming unhinged? The woman’s effigy was glowing with yellow dawn colors.
