Little Blue Encyclopedia (for Vivian) by Hazel Jane Plante – As a queer trans woman sits in the wake of her friend's death, she recounts her memories of and grief for Vivian amongst encyclopedic entries of the niche TV show they enjoyed together.

As someone who has all too often forged close relationships with people in the glow of a shared fandom, I was deeply touched by this narrative. The story weaves through the meaning of various elements of the show to Vivian and the narrator, along with the narrator's unrequited love and the particular intimacy shared among close trans women. To me, it felt like a deep love letter to grief itself.

Have you ever walked into a room and felt like your story didn’t quite belong there? For many in diaspora communities, that feeling is all too familiar. Yet for decades, community organizers, creatives, and thinkers have been building spaces where we do belong.

SPORA builds on that tradition. Our goal: a platform in the Netherlands for voices, stories, and ideas, growth, intergenerational education and visibility. A space for voices from the African and Caribbean diaspora to speak freely, connect deeply, and share ideas on their own terms, where diaspora narratives are not translated, filtered, or minimized, but expressed fully. Because when we gather, we grow.

For our first edition, three changemakers explore what it means to connect. To nature, to each other, and to ourselves:

Kriticos Mwansa – “The Art of Bringing People Together”
Community can’t be manufactured, but we can create the conditions for it to flourish. In an era where “community” is often reduced to a buzzword, Kriticos shares insights on gathering people in a way that feels organic and sincere. From spatial arrangements to conversation prompts. True belonging isn’t engineered; it surfaces when people feel genuinely invited, safe, and when we intentionally design the room for connections to take root.

Glenn Helberg – “Dispersion of Seeds”
What we call culture is often something that exists as a reaction to the environment. Glenn explores the nervous system, the behaviors we show, and understanding why that behavior is shown; adaptation to what our cultures used to be or meant to be.

Jody Morgan – “Touch Grass”
How does nature shape our identity, culture, wellbeing, and sense of belonging? What can nature teach us about connecting with ourselves and with others? Humans are inherently relational, and we often think of nature as scenery, but what if it’s actually one of our oldest relationships?

Glenn Helberg is a psychiatrist, author, speaker, and activist who has spent decades improving the position of Antilleans and Arubans in the Netherlands. He broke multiple taboos within the Caribbean community, including absent fatherhood and homosexuality. In 2011, he initiated the first Antillean boat at Amsterdam’s Pride Canal Parade. He received a royal knighthood in 2013, the Black Achievement Award oeuvre prize in 2019, and the Jos Brink Oeuvre Prize in 2021 for his work as a mental health father of the queer community. Helberg is co-founder of the Expertise Center for Transcultural Therapy.

Kriticos Mwansa is a Zambian-born creative with deep Tanzanian roots, a cultural curator, and the visionary founder of The Book Club. He has cultivated a vibrant community centered on a refreshing premise: “No reading required to spark an incredible dialogue.” By bridging literature with music, art, and culinary experiences, Kriticos reimagines reading as a shared cultural journey rather than a solitary task. From intimate dinners to prisons, to prestigious museums and private members clubs, his mission remains constant: gathering curious minds to exchange knowledge and foster connection through the power of conversation.

Jody Morgan was born on the beautiful island of Saba. Her cultural identity has been shaped by her island home and the countries of her parents: Suriname and St. Lucia. Moving to the Netherlands at 17, Jody began pursuing her dream of becoming an entrepreneur and making a positive impact in the world. She has started businesses ranging from designing jewelry that represents Saba and islands across the Caribbean, to graphic and web design, to consultancy for Caribbean companies. Today, she is also the co-host of the Bite the Bullet Podcast. Through all her ventures, Jody continues to find avenues that keep her close to her culture.

POLITICS, POETRY & ANTICOLONIALISM

For the Saturday night of Moons, we are presenting three short films that help us reflect on colonial violence through spoken and visual poetry.

The night will open and close with a performance by Dominic Pradana, a queer Amsterdam-based Indonesian writer whose work tackles questions of identity, belonging and displacement. We then move to Guinea-Bissau, where Eduardo Williams’s experimental film Parsi takes us along the lives of the queer community, accompanied by a poem by Mariano Blatt, No Es. Then, we slide over to Beirut, Lebanon, with Jocelyne Saab’s monumental documentary Beirut, My City, in which Lebanese actor, playwright and director Roger Assaf delivers a love letter to the city he is witnessing being torn apart and destroyed. Finally, in happiness, Firat Yücel takes us through the visual landscape of the internet to ruminate on the effects of consuming violence online.

Come early to have a drink in the garden and eat with us, as we will be serving food at donation prices from the famous Amsterdam West community kitchen De Sering. Throughout the night, donations can be made to the Lebanese Red Cross.

Using a 360-degree camera, Parsi submerges the viewer in the daily lives of the queer community in Guinea-Bissau. Guided by Mariano Blatt’s poem No Es, the film is an ethnographic exercise in immersion, blurring spectator and subject.

Filmed during the 1982 Israeli siege of Beirut, Beirut, My City speaks to the hardships, woes and strength of the Lebanese people. The film reflects on questions of identity, belonging and memory within cycles of repeated violence. While the film was made in 1982, its themes and images resonate with the current violence in Beirut and Lebanon more broadly, an expansion of Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

These days, everything can be consumed online, including violence. How can we keep up with everything we read about or witness on the internet? happiness questions how we engage with news, violence and genocide online, how it affects us in our lived realities, and how violences underpins minute aspects of our daily lives. The desktop documentary travels the worldwide web to explore these questions.
 

DOMINIC PRADANA

Dominic Pradana is an Indonesian writer and poet based in Amsterdam. His work explores the emotional architectures of colonialism, capitalism, nationhood, and development, asking how these inherited systems shape desire, identity, and belonging. Across his work, queerness becomes a practice of refusal - an interrogation of the inherited scripts through which we come to understand ourselves and the worlds we inhabit. Through poetry and prose, he writes as a practice of unraveling, using language as a mirror, an archive, and a site of becoming.
Dominic runs 'Surviving Paradise' on Substack, an ongoing exploration of what it means to inherit a nation, survive its promises, and imagine other ways of being. He is currently working on his debut novel of the same name.
 

IHAB KHELFA

Cairo-born, Amsterdam-based sound artist and DJ, Ihab’s practice is rooted in movement, research, and sonic storytelling. His journey began across Southeast Asia, continued through Southern Europe, and now evolves in Amsterdam, where he expands his approach to performance and musical exploration. He is currently developing an ongoing series titled La Tabla La Musique, a body of work that reflects his deep engagement with Arab pop, Raï, and electro-Shaabi. Drawing from these influences, Ihab explores ways to reconnect with his childhood sonic memory while merging it with global south electronic music, blurring the boundaries between tradition and contemporary, acid-laced textures.

Throughout the evening, food will be provided by De Sering, the famous community kitchen founded in Amsterdam West. 
De Sering was founded on the belief that strong communities are essential for activism and progress, and that an affordable meal is the perfect way to bring people together, allowing for the material conditions that allow people to participate in society, politics, and activism. Their aim is to expand and build a network of sociocratically organised locations led by participants, fostering community and addressing loneliness and hunger. Beyond cooking and serving food, they plan to offer services like childcare and educational courses to make activism and politics more accessible.

En bref résumé, cela signifie que s'il faut que l'on rabatte la joie de certain'es, qui font des "blagues" au détriment des autres, alors c'est OK, on est des rabat-joies.
Cela consiste, notamment, à ne pas rire ou sourire de façon complaisante avec le groupe à une blague transphobe. On peut alors être accusée de casser l'ambiance ou de ne pas avoir le sens de l'humour. C'est aussi porter plainte au travail pour harcèlement, relever à table que telle remarque est sexiste, etc... Tu deviens une rabat-joie féministe quand tu refuses de laisser passer, de tout encaisser.

L'autrice revient également sur l'histoire du féminisme et rappelle à quel point c'est difficile de parler de racisme avec des femmes blanches et la façon dont elles se sont accaparées ces luttes. En bref résumé, cela signifie que s'il faut que l'on rabatte la joie de certain'es, qui font des "blagues" au détriment des autres, alors c'est OK, on est des rabat-joies.
Cela consiste, notamment, à ne pas rire ou sourire de façon complaisante avec le groupe à une blague transphobe. On peut alors être accusée de casser l'ambiance ou de ne pas avoir le sens de l'humour. C'est aussi porter plainte au travail pour harcèlement, relever à table que telle remarque est sexiste, etc... Tu deviens une rabat-joie féministe quand tu refuses de laisser passer, de tout encaisser.
