THAT BISCUIT WAS NOT
SENT BY GOD👍Fasting is not starvation.
It is simply deciding that the kitchen is closed.
The body will survive this news.
The mind may not.
The mind likes snacks.
It likes standing in front of the refrigerator as though a more meaningful life might have appeared behind the yoghurt.
Fasting interrupts all that.
Not eating for part of the day creates a surprising amount of silence.
No planning the next mouthful.
No wandering into the kitchen for investigative purposes.
No urgent need to eat something because it is 3:17 and existence has become slightly dull.
The body is often perfectly content.
It is the mind that has called an emergency meeting.
There may be hunger.
There may also be habit, boredom, restlessness, advertising, and the sudden conviction that one small biscuit has been personally sent by God.
Fasting begins to separate these things.
Hunger becomes a sensation rather than an instruction.
A wave rises.
A wave passes.
Nothing has gone wrong.
The body is not a helpless container requiring constant topping up.
It knows how to use what has already been stored.
Quite a lot may have been stored.
Enough, in some cases, to survive a minor European winter.
Fasting also exposes how much eating is tied to commentary.
A difficult feeling appears.
Eat.
A pleasant feeling appears.
Celebrate by eating.
Nothing appears.
Eat something while waiting.
The mouth has been given far too much administrative responsibility.
Over time, fasting can return food to its proper place.
Food becomes nourishment again.
Pleasure too.
But not employment.
Not entertainment.
Not a sedative.
Not a reward for surviving until lunchtime.
There is something deeply simple about eating, stopping, and allowing the body to get on with its work.
No spiritual costume is required.
No need to become the person who lectures strangers about insulin at parties.
Just a clear eating window.
Then the door closes.
The plates are washed.
The body digests.
The argument ends.
Fasting does not make anyone superior.
It does not guarantee wisdom.
A person can fast for twenty hours and remain an idiot for all of them.
But it can reveal something useful.
Not every desire requires obedience.
Not every sensation is an emergency.
Not every empty space needs filling.
Sometimes the body is not asking for food.
Sometimes the mind is merely wandering around the house looking for a job.
It does not always need to be employed.
The hunger will pass.
The kitchen can remain closed.
And the empty tummy may turn out not to be empty at all.
It may be freedom.
