Viele Katzenhalter gehen davon aus, dass ihre Tiere automatisch gut versorgt sind, wenn sie im Testament einen Tierschutzverein oder ein Tierheim als Erben einsetzen. Das klingt im ersten Moment sinnvoll, funktioniert in der Praxis aber oft nicht so, wie man denkt.
Nach einem Todesfall vergeht häufig einige Zeit, bis ein Testament überhaupt eröffnet wird. In dieser Phase ist völlig unklar, wer sich um die Katzen kümmert. Genau hier entsteht das eigentliche Problem, denn Tiere brauchen sofort Versorgung und können nicht „warten“, bis rechtliche Dinge geklärt sind.
Hinzu kommt ein weiterer Punkt, der oft übersehen wird: Wer ein Erbe annimmt, übernimmt nicht nur Geld oder Sachwerte, sondern auch alle Verpflichtungen. Dazu gehören unter anderem Beerdigungskosten, offene Rechnungen, Mietzahlungen und die komplette Wohnungsauflösung. Das bedeutet viel Aufwand und oft auch erhebliche Kosten.
Für Tierheime oder Tierschutzvereine lohnt sich ein Erbe daher nur, wenn nach Abzug aller Kosten noch ausreichend Mittel übrig bleiben. In vielen Fällen ist das jedoch nicht so. Dann wird das Erbe abgelehnt.
Wenn kein Erbe vorhanden ist oder alle ablehnen, wird häufig ein Nachlassverwalter eingesetzt. Dieser kümmert sich zwar um finanzielle und rechtliche Dinge, aber nicht um die Tiere. Im schlimmsten Fall greift der Vermieter ein, lässt die Wohnung räumen und die Katzen stehen plötzlich ohne klare Versorgung da.
Mit etwas Glück werden Behörden informiert oder es findet sich jemand, der sich kümmert. Leider endet es aber nicht selten damit, dass Katzen plötzlich als Fundtiere auftauchen oder einfach ausgesetzt werden.
Selbst wenn man Geld für die Versorgung eingeplant hat, gibt es noch einen weiteren Punkt: Viele Menschen verbringen vor ihrem Tod Zeit im Krankenhaus oder Pflegeheim. Auch in dieser Phase müssen die Tiere bereits versorgt werden. Das kostet Zeit, Geld und Organisation – oft über einen längeren Zeitraum.
Deshalb ist die wichtigste Regel ganz einfach:
Die Versorgung von Katzen sollte immer konkret und privat geregelt werden.
Am besten ist es, frühzeitig mit Freunden, Familie oder vertrauten Personen zu sprechen und klare Absprachen zu treffen. Wer kümmert sich im Notfall? Wer übernimmt die Tiere dauerhaft? Gibt es eine finanzielle Unterstützung für diese Person?
Ein Testament allein ist dafür nicht geeignet. Es kann eine Ergänzung sein, ersetzt aber keine praktische Lösung im Alltag.
Wer sich rechtzeitig darum kümmert, verhindert genau die Situationen, die für Katzen am schlimmsten sind: plötzlich allein, ohne Versorgung und ohne klare Zuständigkeit.
