  9. Here’s why it’s important that #autism is considered a disability. When I applied for both #PWD and the #DTC when I became an adult, only PWD approved me and the DTC rejected me, as they said being autistic is not a disability despite the fact it very much is a disability to me, as it can make communicating challenging for me. Fast forward 8 years later, and I was diagnosed as a type 1 #diabetic, which the DTC considers as automatic approval criteria, so I applied again and this time, I got approved. The thing is, while #diabetes can be a disability for many especially with difficult to control #glucose as well as the financial cost with all the supplies and #insulin needed to manage it, I’ve not found it anywhere near as disabling to me yet compared to being autistic. So if #type1diabetes automatically gets you on the DTC, why is being #autistic not considered a disability despite the fact it’s prevented me from getting a job to financially support myself? This is very much why I am against it when advocates claim autism isn’t a disability, or when people try to replace the term with something like “#diverseabilities”. Because a #disability is after all something that prevents you from doing something, and the term reflects that accurately. #disabled
