With influences such as The Rival Mob, Spy and Paint it Black the four-piece started the band to step outside the norm of what is expected in hardcore but still paying homage to the bands who have influenced their sound.

On October 6, 1998, Refused played their last show in a basement in Harrisonburg, VA. Three songs in, halfway through "Rather Be Dead," Harrisonburg police pulled the plug. The crowd chanted "rather be alive!" as the amps went dead. Four people were arrested. The band drove to DC and flew home, done.
They'd already broken up mid-tour, canceling half the dates. The album they were touring, The Shape of Punk to Come, had flopped. Their final press release was titled "Refused Are Fucking Dead" and vowed they'd never reunite.
Then the legend grew. The basement show became lore. The album sold tens of thousands, then kept selling. Linkin Park, Paramore, Turnstile, Enter Shikari all cite it. Mike Shinoda said there'd be no Linkin Park without Refused. The record they called the shape of punk to come actually became it.
In 2012 they came back. Coachella paid them a reported $500k. From a basement for 75 people to a festival main stage in front of 80,000. Two more albums since. 27 years after the cops killed the amps in Harrisonburg, Refused are still fucking alive.
