it holds you under, under, under;
leave it red-streaked and huffing,
disappearing down the lonesome night;

unsure the border between dream and

relaxing, it
drifts on the air.

The Hunter Teaches

he is aware of the similitude, perhaps,
as he instructs, the hand a knife,
his body a carcass;
see the finger trace from
the soft hollow where the ribs end;
down the belly, to the crotch,
one more, widthwise and peeling, fingers
pinching, feigned knifework;
the mimicry of emptying –
all is alike, in a sense,

a trophy and a needed thing;
a sharp discard; a source of
immense pain – gather,
gather, with every day
the basket fills from
hollow to pile; with every day
a new evil trinket; a newborn
slickness; little hunks of plastic
and flesh, always flesh;
there’s a desire, there’s a desire,
it’s in the basket too, it’s
found in the world and
plucked, gently,
brought along.

everybody needs an anchor binding them,
everyone needs a home, a love, a great and
dismal quest;
everybody needs a well-diversified portfolio
with a sky-high rate; everyone needs
a well-oiled rifle, a trusty knife; everyone
needs to look over the horizon for a
long, long time
until movement draws the eye –
everyone sees the shape
but nobody agrees on the need.
