Jules looked up, looked straight at Rory, his black eyes almost pleading. “I don’t want to have to watch you to go down this fucked-up road, period. Do you fucking understand?”
Rory held his breath.
“And it’s not because I’m ‘such a good guy.’” Jules made exaggerated air quotes. “I know you think that’s all I care about, doing the ‘right thing,’ and I guess that ought to be a fucking compliment, but it just makes me feel like you think I don’t have my own stupid feelings like a normal stupid human being. I want to protect you because I fucking want to. I know I said that one time I’d never ask you for anything again, but I guess that was a lie, ’cause I asked you to help me with Max, and now I’m asking for this. And I think I’m entitled to it. ’Cause God knows, Rory Navarrete, you will never stop owing me. And if that’s not a good enough reason for you, then I guess you’re right—you’re not the person I thought you were.”
Rory was silent a moment, letting this soak in. “You really don’t think I’m a lost cause, huh?”
Jules’s only answer was a shrug.
“Just so you know,” said Rory, after a long pause, “this is a pretty weird not-friends thing we have going on here.”
Jules side-eyed him. “Human relationships aren’t always easy to define.”

“What you know is how to spend every ounce of your energy trying to ‘rescue’ other people so you never have to deal with your own shit.”
“How’s this for dealing with my own shit: Get. Out.” Jules was red in the face, his eyes blazing coals. “You’ve done it again, you shithead—made me hate myself. Thanks for reminding me what a stupid asshole I was to think we could ever, ever, ever be friends again.”
Rory turned, made a beeline for the door.
“Rory…wait.” Suddenly Jules stood in front of the door, blocking Rory’s exit.
“Move,” said Rory.
“Make me.”
“What are we, in fucking eighth year again? Get out of my way.”
Jules stood with his back against the door, arms spread, palms against the wall on either side of the doorframe. A drooling glove of panchrest clung to his damaged hand, leaving scarlet smudges on the wall behind it. “Not gonna. Can’t make me.”
“Your fucking hand, you moron.”
“You go sit the fuck back down and I will too.”
“Fuck,” exploded Rory, and did as he was told.
Jules joined him at the table, resubmerged his hand in the panchrest bowl.
They sat in sullen silence for several minutes.
“You are one stubborn motherfucker,” said Rory finally.

Jules crawled into bed close beside her, braving the perpetual breath of ice that rose from her chest, the familiar, queasy magnetism of the void.
She stirred, made a sound. He enfolded her, sighed at the sensation of her kisses on his neck. “Hey,” he whispered. “How you feeling?”
He could hear the grin in her voice as she fondled his backside. “Real good now.”
He smiled in spite of himself, rested his head against hers. “Can I ask you something random?”
“Anytime, podnah.”
She was in a good mood. Which just kind of made the whole thing that much worse. “Was your childhood…normal?”
Max gave a faint snort. “Dude. What even is normal?”
“Dunno.” Jules stroked her back, kissed her hair. “Just wondering if you ever felt weird as a kid. Or, like…if your family was weird.”
“I mean, duh. You know me. I was a total fruit bat. All the kids at school hated me.”
Jules laughed, cuddled her closer—swallowed the lump in his throat. “Really?”
“Chyeah, dude. I was a freak and a half. I always made up these nonsense song-and-dance numbers. I had this sailor dress in third grade that I wore to school every day for like a month. One time I stole my mom’s eyebrow pencil and started drawing freckles on my face every day ’cause I was obsessed with Pippi Longstocking. I was such a dork. Nobody wanted to be seen with me. I was a total pariah.”
“I…can’t even picture you in a dress. I mean, you’d look great in one, but you know.”
“Yeah. I’m a lot less flamboyant these days. Don’t like people looking at me as much anymore. Go figure.”
Jules kissed her. “We would’ve gotten along.”
“You think so? You, preppy rich kid, and me, incorrigible clown?”
“What makes you think I was preppy?”
“Dude. I’ve seen your old clothes.”
“Point. No, I know I would have liked you. I mean, Rory was the last person you would’ve thought I’d be friends with, but…yeah.”
“Rory’s kind of like me on steroids.”
“Yikes that comparison.”
“Sorry.”
Jules held her closer, sighed. He wanted more than anything to just keep rambling on wherever the conversation took them. Have one of their giddy all-nighters, talk about all the stupid things they would have done together as kids in some awesome otherworld where their spheres had overlapped sooner and for wildly different reasons.
Unfortunately, he’d come here tonight with a purpose.

CW: Long rambling thoughts on finishing NaNoWriMo
I hit my goal of finishing Part 2 of #ThoseWhoCreateAndDestroy, my partner Mabel's and my epic queer switchblade-and-sorcery novel that we first began drafting in 2016, for #NaNoWriMo2022, and it feels really good.
It wasn't easy getting into the home stretch, and once I did I was dead to my body and the world for a few days. Finished it Sunday, and two days later I think I'm still recovering. 😅 And part of me's raring to go on finishing Part 3, which is already outlined and partly written, but that may mostly have to wait till after the holidays. We'll see.
Part 2 is now available to download on our Patreon at any contribution level (link below). Part 1 is free to read/download on Mabel's and my website (link also below), and chapters of Part 2 will continue to be posted there every Monday and Friday till we've finished Part 3, at which point we'll release all three parts for free on our site and in ebook format, and for print-on-demand at cost or as close as we can get it.

When a hijacked war golem turns on the crowd at a meeting of the Auctoritas Magicae, prodigy apprentice Jules Nimri deploys his newly-developed “combat alchemy” to bring down the automaton—but only after the construct has slaughtered dozens. In the aftermath of the tragedy, accusations fly, rekindling an ancient interfaction feud that could plunge the arcane world into war.
Meanwhile, in nearby Chicago, young ex-mage Rory Navarrete is swept back up in the esoteric life he left behind when he stumbles on a coven of apostate mages in the middle of a ritual human sacrifice. After striking them down with his own forbidden magic, Rory rushes the victim to the Enclave to seek treatment for a supernatural injury—only to be clapped in irons the moment he sets foot on premises.
Jules negotiates Rory’s release, tentatively reviving a childhood friendship that ended in betrayal. The star-crossed odd couple join forces to investigate the murderous apostates—only to find clues of a deep conspiracy, and a malignant magic long thought extinct. Their discovery could prevent tensions from boiling over, but finding proof is no easy task, and time’s working against them, as Hunter Lockwood, scion of a potent magic dynasty—and Jules’s depraved ex-betrothed—stokes the fires of separatism to fuel his own political rise, pushing the alliance toward the brink much faster than anyone could have imagined.
