No. I usually look for the most common first and last names of the area/time the story is set in, and pick one.

Well, When I first started writing the series, Roan was a fairly unique name. Now, it's kind of common. I feel like a trendsetter. Truth was, I stumbled into something as it was starting to crest, which I have dome before. I do occasionally have incredible dumb luck.

The point of the character names in the Winds & Pillars is that they are NOT unique in their setting.

Moon's name refers to the power she has, nothing else. Within the novels this is rarely mentioned, but the names are simply a designation. They are meant to dehumanize their bearer.

I doubt readers actually realize this, but I did that on purpose.

Anaïs and Nadia both have common names. In fact, Anaïs was the most popular girl's name in the department and year she was born, so there were probably always at least two or three girls named Anaïs in her class at school. Nadia was a less popular name that year, though.

However, I made up their family name. As far as I know, it's not a real French family name, just one that hopefully sounds like it could be real.

My MC has at least five names, and in a world where everybody names themself, this count is likely typical. Family names don't exist since property and status are not heritable.

Everybody starts with the same name, however. It's "Child" (nominal) or "Child of" (familial). Despite being an interstellar society (without electricity or A/C), child mortality rates are high. Each day is a heat index warning day, and some days are deadly for adults, let alone infants. Thus you get called "Child" until you understand the concept of naming yourself, assuming you survive. Considering how children are, they probably have a series of names into their teens.

My MC is 30 now, so she had named herself at least once, but she never shares that name because she got blackmailed into working for the mob and worries that name could be traced.

When she got blackmailed into the mob, she on the spot named herself "Lightning Bolt" because she could believably prove she was a fast flier and not be questioned. She's now an air courier.

She has two other names. One is "Tandem." She taught some guy to fly tandem with her (too complex to explain here) and suggested that name so as not to use her mob name. They became long time friends. She took the name "Good Eye" when she inadvertently became a celebrity photographer, so as not to publicize her mob name where it might be recognized by the wrong people.

Hard to say whether in a world population of 240 million people that her names are unique, but they might be rare. Japan also has a descriptive naming system with half the population; by convention many personal names are reused and some are very common, like Yuki and Shiro (Snow and White respectively). I suspect some combinations in this world are more common than others. Other names in the story are phrases, like Night on Fire and Arrow Flies True and seem more unique.

No. The three are called Herrad, Wulfila, and Ardeija. The first two are existing real world names anyway and not uncommon in their world, and while the third is invented (as I needed something fitting the fictional steppe nomad people the character's mother hails from), it is only unusual insofar as it is rare in the region the stories are set in, but it is certainly not unique.

Fairy and Giant have names, but I'm planning to not mention them. In the narration, Fairy is just "I" and Giant is "the giant" (and later, "my giant").

She keeps changing her name. From Iryna to Ishkara and then (spoilers for the prologue of my next book!) — Vidmara!

Iryna is a Ukrainian name meaning peace.

Ishkara and Vidmara are both invented. I named Ishkara over 10 years ago; I don’t remember how it came about.

Vidmara comes from a Ukrainian word and folklore. Vidma means witch and mara which is a creature that brings nightmares.

I wish the honorable Sir David Attenborough would be narrating all my works, but instead imagine the main characters instead who are mostly young women between 13 and 25 years of age.

The Manager is overworked and constantly drinking tea to steady their nerves, they think they are the boss when in fact they are one voice among many. Loves their spreadsheets, order, and protocol.

The Librarian is a dear, loves their books and their library. Fussy, obsessive about detail, wears reading glasses on a chain. A soft-spoken, gentle soul, that can become very protective. A dreamer.

Since some things call for me to be pedantic, I looked up what exactly is meant with quirks and was surprised... almost everything that makes a character an individual is a quirk. Having freckles? Athletic build?

It's not a term I thought much about, I admit.

But with that in mind: Bella has messy hair and sees things that other people don't see. Avey can turn into a swift. When the queen eats fish, she masticates it to a pulp and swallows it, bones and all... I'm sure there's more...

Drummond, the head of the Hounds, is notoriously brusque. His way of ending a call is to do just that, end it by hanging up without saying goodbye.

Napier, however, is the exact opposite. Being prescient he knows who’s calling him even before they’ve finished dialling his number.

What quirks do some of your characters have?

My (#SolarPunk in the future) boatbuilding community's wave energy engineer is a sullen young man who suspects people of hankering for pre-Collapse conditions of life. So people tend to avoid him and his growling. Except the realisation is spreading that he's made friends with a humpbacked whale mother, and when he rows out into the bay at dawn he's going swimming with her and her calf.

Charlotte Schneider, from A Girl's Guide To Survival Cannibalism, swallowed buttons as a way of relieving stress. In her opinion, this was a quirk, a weird little thing she did. Anyone with any knowledge would have recognized it as pica, an eating disorder which can lead to serious health problems. Schneider needed help when she had a nervous breakdown in her 20s, but she never told anyone she swallowed buttons.

Ethan sleeps in his clothes. He's fully dressed as much as possible because his leap forward in time came in the form of waking up on a park bench in his undies. He also doesn't eat until others have started, but that's not actually due to food insecurity so much as religion. He had to wait on the rest of the family praying before he could dig in. A lot of normally trauma-informed habits came from navigating being the only atheist in a big family.

Brand is really interesting because he uses surprisingly technical terms for a happy-go-lucky meathead. This is not a guy you'd expect to be thinking in terms of "cyanotrope" or "prolate spheroid." As little attention as he paid to theology, he's absorbed hard sciences like a sponge.

CARRIE: Probably something along the lines of 'are you okay', since I'm never truly okay. But I can't throw too much shade, since sometimes I ask it of myself.

Honourable mention to "will this be on the exam", like the prof isn't going to answer that sensibly, just assume it will be.

• Lightning Bolt (MC): Her studio apartment walls and ceiling are plastered with photographs she took. Lots of men. Many are suggestive, and she can view them from the hammock she uses as a bed.
• Blue (SC, LI): Worries a lot about not being able to raise a family thanks to his new job as a praetorian working for Rainy Days, which to him is mind-blowing and fabulous. Still, he wants to raise kids.
• Shugh (SC): Donuts—how he maintains his soft, rounded, feminine look (he's trans-fem). He introduces Bolt to the food.
• Molt (SC, LI): University student. Easy for Bolt to tickle into nerd mode and, since he studies women (more is kinda spoilers), this delights Bolt as she likes how he studies and measures her.
• Devil-girl (SC): Way too many quirks to catalog, but mostly due to being a high functioning autist. She comes off as super-serious about everything, but nearly impossible to goad. Here's one: Love love loves praise, but only if she considers it earned—at which time she'll do a little jig.
• Boss Mead (A): Despite basically being a mafia don, he likes having business meetings at open air cafés. Makes his minions nervous, causing them to control traffic. Clients watch their tongue. Maybe it proves to him how talented he is at not incriminating himself.
• Rainy Days (A): Way too glib and sparkly, projecting an air of being an airhead whilst being touchy-feely, getting you to talk—this despite essentially ruling all of humanity. You don't want to see her serious.

#PennedPossibilities 1126: Tell us what your narrator sounds like in your mind.

Any narrator that isn't a character is going to sound like the default voice in my head, which is about what counts as my own mental voice. I can't seem to wrap my head around the sound of my own voice, so my mental voice is... sort of a husky alto child's voice most of the time, or sometimes a clarion countertenor that sounds more teenaged. My voice never sounded like either, though.

It's not like I don't like my own voice. I do. I just can't seem to remember it properly, and I have no idea where I picked either of those up, because neither sounds like any friend or family member ever did.

That's essentially impossible to say in space society, so...

For Godskiller the most common answer is probably the gods and their chosen champions throughout history. They don't have movies or TV yet, but bardic magic does make for some excellent stage productions.

Jerako is a bit more explicit about mining their own history for media, so Ruby, the Series is on the boob tube if you can snag one. They also have somehow managed to get at least one VHS of Choujin Sentai Jetman, because scraps of contact with Earth go way back.

No contest. I can't help it, I loved him in QI and for some reason it's his voice I hear now.

The story needs someone who can deliver a line like "We draw from the observable facts" with the exasperated patience of a schoolmaster explaining long division to a golden retriever.

I haven't listened to the audiobooks with Harry Potter, and I never will for reasons that have nothing to do with him.

I have so many of them! And I record my own audiobooks so I try to capture an essence of it… although I don’t possess quite the vocal range to capture everything as it really should be. For some narrators I really need to be a Ukrainian woman. 😅

Now I come to think about it, I quite like the idea of having the narrator of the TV series Bad Monkey, Tom Nowicki, who also played the character Captain Fitzpatrick, taking over the role.

While I can remember a tune as if an audio recording in my head, and the distinct voice, tonality, and vocal range of the singer, all my narrators have my head voice, which isn't even my own true voice as I might hear hearing myself recorded. When I wrote fan fiction, with I think one exception, none were other than my head voice even though I can remember lines from the show in the voice actor's voice. Whilst I have no problem imagining objects in 3D and rotating them around to look at all sides†, I can not imagine the sound of my characters speaking in their own voices. I've no clue to their tonality or vocal range, or what they sound like, even after assign these things for story purposes, as well as after assigning dialect and accents. Yet, I can hear the sounds of a wooden boat creaking as the water laps against the hull, the flutter of wings as birds take flight, and the wind rustling in waves through the canopy of a tree. Maybe that's like a recording, the way I do with music. Dunno.

Guess I'm a visual person from an imagination standpoint. Anyone else like that?
