Back on #MavericksForever. 😅 I just missed it. Getting #MacJournal and #Scrivener for free is a huge advantage of #retroComputing. 😊

OK. my writing app now generates an ePub. I fixed some minor formatting issues and cleaned up the code.
Next up, generating a Scivener .scrivx file. Why? Just in case I need it.

Working on a Novella I started back in 2009-“The Clock Maker”-part parable, part children’s story. Using Scrivener to get it out of MS Word. Had about 10 chapters-(short)-but getting back into it. Has nothing to do directly with my blog. But hope to maybe someday release a chapter a week, for my “late week” post. #AmWriting #WritingCommunity

Have I mentioned recently how good Scrivener 3 for Mac is?
It's remarkable that the developer was an author who couldn't find writing software they liked, so they decided to learn Mac development and write their own.
Last time I checked, they hadn't written their novel. They did make the preferred writing software for a lot of people across many sectors.

Poszukuje jakiejś apki (web/android) do pisania w sensie planowania treści, tworzenia, organizowania projektu etc.

I finally caved and reinstalled win10 so I can use Scrivener + OneDrive. Man oh man, these updates... 😭💀
I really wish Lit&Latte would make a linux version.
I know there are plenty of ways to get it mostly-working on Linux. But Scrivener is an asshole of a program... and I've found it works best with OneDrive.
But this re-dive into Windows is making me rethink things. Likely gonna try getting it on Linux again.

Yay! #Apple #pages is now #AI infused!!! It now requires a subscription for certain features. Just what I needed, another subscription from Apple! Not expecting simple editing to remain free for long.
I moved to #Scrivener because iCloud sync is so unreliable. Still is.

[…] Linux as an alternative has been on my mind, obviously. However, there are some programs I use daily (like Scrivener, yes, you can laugh) and are essential to me, but not supported on that OS. Using Wine is an option… well. Buggy option.
https://blog.urara.pl/hate-is-a-strong-word-but-i-really-really-really-don’t-like-windows-11
Wine is in fact great and saved my ass a couple of times https://kolektiva.social/@oatmeal/115926470651318377, but if you start your search thinking you need Wine, you are going about it the wrong way.
It seems everyone loathes Windows 11… If you are willing to use #Windows still, you’re already making a huge compromise - bigger, more serious, and more high-stakes than finding a native alternative to #Scrivener on #Linux, which for me is #Emacs (with org-roam or denote or plain org), since Emacs is the solution for most text processing tasks, from writing to researching to #AI to… you know what I mean.
If you’re willing to downgrade from Windows 11 to Windows 10, you might be saving yourself time and grief in the long term by installing Linux on a spare laptop or PC you probably have lying around (or VM, or dual boot etc) and planning your next steps.
Scrivener is not a deal-breaker; habits are, and possibly the cost of correcting course. But that’s not really such a big deal as it might seem. Moving off #USA controlled big tech proprietary spyware asap is possibly more urgent in any case.

@neve
Do I use any tools to keep track of plot lines, character details, research, future ideas?I do my initial drafting in Scrivener, so I keep all my related research materials there. Character details are in a Style Sheet--a carryover from when I was a copyeditor.
Future ideas live in a folder on the laptop where I drop info, plus a blank book I carry around in case inspiration strikes.

#Schreiben #SelfPublishing

I'm one pissed #Author. Filed this 1-star review on the App Store today. Am I the only one using the iPad with #Scrivener?
Titled: Abandonware?
I hate to lower the star average on this otherwise wonderful author-oriented text editing iPad app, however since iPadOS 26 debuted last fall, the app has suffered from issues with Find (⌘F). I noted them first in beta, and I posted to the forums. Now, with 26.2 out for weeks (I am using the release version of iPadOS, now), still no bug fix update issued. Using Find often but intermittently causes the find window to show then hide itself. If it does show, using it a few times can lock up the app until it quits and restarts. It appears to be related to the Windowed Apps feature, but it happens even with the feature turned off. Lit & Latte has updated the Mac version repeatedly, but why not the iOS/iPadOS version? It feels like they've abandoned it. Think about it, what kind of revision can you do without search and search and replace working? I am using the M5 iPad Pro 13", but it failed on my earlier iPad, too. I do not recommend buying the app for sole iPad use, nor if you need to use it for syncing between Apple platforms. The Mac version has no issues. I will revise this review once the issue is fixed.

#WritersCoffeeClub Jan 4. Share a tool of your trade.
I can't stop being an advocate for #Scrivener ever since #Microsoft tricked me into saving ALL of my writing to the cloud instead of my device, and then removed 90% of it when I refused to pay for more storage.
Fortunately I compulsively back everything up, but I refuse to to let products I own and use hold my own work ransom.
Anyway, Scrivener is great. Easy to keep notes and individual chapters all in the same project. Never going back.

PSA: Scrivener on Apple forcing GenAI/LLMs on them

RegEx for Speedy Story Revision
Here are the current iteration of these two RegEx search strings. I will update this post to keep it up to date. The \b requires a beginning- or end-of-word to maximize exact matches. The (?: ) is a non-replacing grouping for multiple words with similar issues, and for he/she matches. Depending on your writing, you may want to change the pronouns to he|she|it|they. Both RegEx rely on NOT selecting Case Sensitive for searches.
- Negative Protection and Homonyms:
can\b|can't|can not|could\b|couldn't|cannot|shall\b|shan'|shall not|shoud\b|shouldn't|should not|would not|\bwould\b|\bwouldn't|\bwith\b|without|write\b|\bright|lead\b|\bled\b|lede|choose|chose|lose|loose
- Weasel and Hedge Words:
ly\b|\babout\b|almost|already|barely|\bbit\b|begin|\bbegan\b|\can|certain|generally|\bguess|\bjust\b|kind|\blike|maybe|mostly|near|course|pretty|perhaps|possibly|potentially|really|probably|\bseem|\bsome\b|sort|start|\bstill\b|surprisingly|suppose|\bthink\b|usually|could|\bsaw\b|\bheard\b|\bfelt\b|\bknew\b|\bread\b|noticed|recognized|\band\b|\bbut\b|(?:I|he|she) could (?:see|hear|taste|touch)|(?:I|he|she) (?:saw|hear|knew|read|felt|noticed|recognized) that|you can|made certain
If you use #Scrivener, this is the procedure for turning these searches into Binder/Left-sidebar buttons on the Mac, though probably similar on Windows:
- Click the combo-button for Search.
- Select Search in Project.
- Copy-Paste a RegEx string and press Enter.
- Note to the left inside the search control there is a magnifier and a combo-button. Open it. Select at minimum RegEx. I also select the name of my drafts folder, which is Manuscript, and Text so only what I want to revise is shown in the binder. Turn off Case Sensitive if on.
- Click Save Search as Collection.
- Provide a name in the dialog (it initially displays the RegEx string).
- Click View > Binder (if not already check marked).
- Click View > Collections (if not already check marked).
If you need to update a collection, use this procedure:
- Click the RegEx search collection in the binder. This displays it in the search control.
- Copy it from the search control.
- Press the minus button in the + - shown to the right of Collections. This deletes only the selected existing search collection. There is no way to directly update a search collection.
- Paste your revision.
- Follow the first set of instructions to recreate the collection.
On the iPad and iPhone, RegEx search exists but only finds a single word or phrase at a time. Disappointing, but it works. You will find RegEx which you tap gear icon when using Find. You can't save the search, but I put it in the Notes app so I can reference it easily.
The image shows Weasel and Hedge Words in use. In the top left, you'll see the search box with the RegEx, and below it my two collections which are titled 🔍Positives and Negatives and 🔍Weasel and Hedge Words. Note the highlights. Desktop Scrivener shows all matches, making quick review and revision a snap. I've added "and" and "but" and "ly" to highlight overuse of conjunctions and adverbs. There's also double-word error highlighted.
May your editing, revising, and review be simple and swift!

@aki It's a great tool. I've used it for the opposite: to take a Word doc exported by Scrivener to convert to Markdown, then imported into novelWriter. It took a little custom code to handle quirks in novelWriter's dialect of Markdown, but other than that it made it much easier to leave Scrivener behind.

@grammargirl I've had a fun journey for saving a huge amount of links for future reference.
I can't get myself to like Apple Numbers so Excel is my default & links don't save there as clickable. I found that #scrivener saves immediately as a clickable link so I shoved TONS of links and things into a giant file until it started to slow WAY down. Maybe misuse of tools?😏
I recently moved over to a #bbedit project which seems to have NO limits… well, other than you can't save graphics.

I recently decided to try out a bunch of different writing tools to see what worked for me.
I tried out seven different Word Processing / Manuscript Editing options and wanted to give my thoughts and reviews of each of the following:
#Obsidian
#Ellipsus
#Reedsy
#WorldAnvil
#Scrivener
#LibreOffice
#GoogleDocsI did not review Microsoft Word - it has enough written about it on the internet already.

Hey, that's a topic I can speak to with some (limited) authority! Not the marketing stuff, as much - I'm terrible at that - but the typesetting. I just finished doing a review of six of the PC tools available for word processing and manuscript editing. I should probably do individual posts for each, but to skip to the end, I'll say that in terms of Typesetting, #Reedsy and #Scrivener are my current two favorites.

@neve
Do I have a dedicated writing space? How do you set it up?I don't really have a dedicated space. Yet. My office upstairs is a cluttered disaster, but one day it will be a haven.
One day.
Now, the big difference is my software. My work is mostly in MS Word (which I hate, to be truthful), so I write in Scrivener. I'm more productive, and using it helps put me in the mood.
Also, chai. Chai helps with productivity.

@Marco_Mindstone interesting to hear your experience with the learning curve with #strut. I recently started using #scrivener and the only 'bad' thing I would say is the learning curve.

Does anyone know how to get Scrivener to replace italics with underlines? I've clicked the compile option, but it's not working. I've also tried doing it manually within the styles section in compile. Not working either.
That worked last time I did it but not today. What moon phase are we in? Am I suppose to sacrifice the goat this week, or the pig, to appease the Scrivener gods?

Hello #academicchatter, can someone share their experience with referencing in #Scrivener?
I'm considering using it to write up my dissertation but I've been spoiled by #Mendeley's MS Word plugin and it turns out there is no Scrivener equivalent.
So, I wonder how you go about syncing Scrivener with your reference manager? Is #Zotero's RTF scan (and I hear #Endnote can do something similar) the best option?

Scrivener.

@MelRootsNWrites thanks for mentioning #Scapple. I wasn’t familiar with it, although I’ve used #Scrivener for years. I think I will give it a try. As for making charts like you showed of DNA matches, I actually put them into #Reunion and generate charts that way. Sometimes into an Ancestry tree. I put the # of cM as a suffix after the name. Works pretty well and also I’ve preserved the data in tree format that can be exported as a Gedcom at any point. #GeneticGenealogy

Trying out ProWritingAid Everywhere for Mac and ProWritingAid for Safari. Works great in Apple Notes and Scrivener (yay!) but I can't get it to work in Mastodon on Safari or in the Ivory app on Mac. @terryflynn I love#linux and first used it in 1993 at Keele. I ran Slackware on 8MB (yes, mega) of RAM on my home PC and used it to send print jobs to Unix servers at the University (among other things) back when we could ‘finger’ eachother and send out a ‘gopher’.
Unfortunately, as a publishing author, I had to move to #macos to run the tools I need ( #scrivener , #Scapple , #Vellum , editing software, etc.) but I do miss those early days when we were beta testing the WWW.
